She is a foster mom. She goes on mission trips. She ministers the love of Jesus to everyone. She meets on today’s podcast. Meet Marianne tiger, who works three jobs. So she can afford to go tell people about Jesus. If she can be a missionary, anyone can be a missionary. Jesus said, go into all the world and preach the gospel. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord. Welcome to the evangelism podcast with dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews, fulltime evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary and evangelist Daniel King. Welcome to the evangelism podcast. I’m Daniel King, and I am excited about telling people about Jesus today. I have a special guest with me, miss Marianne tiger, who is a short term missionary. She just returned from the nation of Senegal, and she’s also recently been to Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Liberia, and she also loves ministering to children that come to her through the foster care system. So ms. Maryanne, thank you so much for joining us on the podcast today. Thank you for having me. Alright, Maryanne, tell us a little bit about your recent trip to Senegal and what God did there.
Marianne Tiger (01:43):
I was so glad to go, you know, with this whole plan Demi going on the last six months and my trip in April was canceled obviously to Ghana and Ghana was so closed. And so just praying and seeking God and found out that Senegal was open to having tourists come and they weren’t requiring Americans to get a visa. So I was like, this is it. And me and another pastor from Africa, we got a contact and everything came together within like two weeks. Like we had an itinerary and everything just like fell right in place. And it was, God has how smoothly everything went. And we just, you know, went and did what we were supposed to do on the planes. You know, what the mask and everything and showing our negative test results and everything, and go and obey God. And
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:26):
Is the one time where it’s positive to be negative.
Marianne Tiger (02:30):
That’s true. And so the people were very open and receptive and it broke my heart. When I found out that Senegal has 95% Muslims. And so the other 5% is, you know, Christians, Catholics and Mormons, Jehovah witnesses and atheist or nothing. So I always loved preaching on evangelism anyway. And so that’s one of the main messages that I preach when I minister to kids or youth or the adults, and just really serve them up, set a fire in their heart that it’s their job, their responsibility to reach their people. And there’s fear of influence. Cause us missionaries are only there for a short amount of time and everyone is called to tell others about Jesus and what he’s done in their life. It’s not just full time ministers or pastors job. It’s everybody’s job to do that.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:14):
So while you were there in Senegal , you had a chance to minister, to children, to youth and to adults. Tell us about some of the ministry that you were able to do.
Marianne Tiger (03:24):
Yeah. I got there on a Sunday morning and came straight to church and did ministry. We had two services, well, straight from the airport to the pastor’s house change real quick and ate and then went to the church and we had to,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:39):
It was missionary to hit the ground running.
Marianne Tiger (03:42):
Yeah. They were like, you don’t want to rest. I’m like, I don’t want to miss any time I’m here to, I can rest later. I can do ministry now and rest later. So,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:49):
And tell me some of the testimonies of what God did while you were there.
Marianne Tiger (03:53):
Just seeing that, you know, we work with some different denominations that are maybe not as used to, you know, the Holy spirit moving in or anything like that. And so even when with some restrictions where they’re saying, you know, we don’t touch as much stuff like that because we have to follow their rules and things like that. And God just touched people, even if you don’t touch them and pray for them, the power of God can still touch people, you know? And then when you speak the word of God, there’s power and it touches hearts. And people were just touched by the word of God and teaching on, you know, prayer and evangelism and they have value and purpose, just see their lives change. And then there was some people that we did, you know, lay hands on and see, God touched them that were sick and things like that. And you know, they just get emotional sometimes when you pray for them because you have, you know, similar testimonies or just compassion for them. And,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:42):
And so when you were ministering and praying for people, did you use a translator?
Marianne Tiger (04:47):
We had a French translator that’s that translated for us. And then some people that are Como server,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:56):
My wife speaks some French, but I only speak Spanish
Marianne Tiger (05:00):
More Spanish. So I understand some of the French because of the Latin based similarities, but it’s hard to communicate, but we have a translator. And then some people do speak English that are educated. So it’s nice to be able to speak with them and get them to use their English again. And then there’s the African language Wolof. So when we were in some of the different cities that we had, the translator translate in Wolof, if there was more children, because they’re not as fluent in French yet, so,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:25):
Okay. So you have gone to Senegal and then you’ve also been to Sierra Leone to Nigeria, to Liberia a few years ago. You also had the chance to come with us to the nation of beliefs, where we did the beliefs festival of hope, and we’re very privileged to have you on our team. And so what, what are some of the differences and similarities you see between all these different nations you’ve been to?
Marianne Tiger (05:50):
Well, Balise is more of a Catholic nation because of the colonization. So they’ve heard about Jesus more than the people of Senegal. And so but everywhere there’s people who might’ve heard the truth and may have not received it yet and kind of do their own thing or they think they don’t need God. So that’s similarity in all the world and everybody needs Jesus, but there’s more, there’s poverty, a lot more poverty in Africa, I would say, you know, but in Belize we did bigger crusades. We did the big open air crusade, which was awesome. And we hit seven cities that week, while we were there. So it was a great way to evangelize that whole thing.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:30):
You actually did. 11 differences,
Marianne Tiger (06:32):
11. Okay. I’m off by a few cities.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:35):
So that was a tremendous outreach where we impacted the entire nation of beliefs. Okay. So you’re doing, there’s these trips and you, you mentioned that there’s a lot of poverty in some of these nations. Tell me, what do you put in your suitcase when you go?
Marianne Tiger (06:52):
I get that I get is a little better ticket where I can bring more weight. Cause usually you can bring two 50 pound bags and these tickets, let me bring two 70 pound bags, plus a carry on and a backpack, which has my step arrive with lots of luggage. Cam will bring in everything and loading it up. So I bring Bibles, I bring glasses, I bring presents, I bring toys, candy, clothes, balloons, you know, snacks, different things that they need. I brought this time, a lot of French books from TLR Osborn ministries on different topics. He’s got like six or seven books on evangelism, how to be a Christian woman in ministry, different things. And the people were so happy to receive those books.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:28):
I love TLR Osborne’s books. They have impacted people all over the world. Yeah.
Marianne Tiger (07:33):
So the pastor was so excited and we were giving them out to the different churches. And I told them, when you read it, give it to someone else and pass them along. So you know, more people can read them and don’t just read it and put it on a shelf, you know?
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:43):
So you had 140 pounds worth in year, two suitcases, plus your carry on and your two carry ons and you, you brought all that and you left almost everything there,
Marianne Tiger (07:55):
Everything there. Yeah. Come back with two big, huge empty suitcases. Then there’s my, my roll bag.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:01):
I know, especially those, those books will be very highly prized and appreciated right there. What a tremendous ministry. Now you also have a great ministry over the years to foster children and you have taken kids in and been a foster mother for them. Tell us about that.
Marianne Tiger (08:25):
Well, there’s a big need in the U S and around the world. And James, it talks about in the Bible that to take care of the widows and orphans and that’s God’s heartbeat is those neglected and abandoned and rejected. And I was myself found myself living in foster homes from the age of six to 13 in between,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:40):
You were actually a foster child yourself from six to 13 to the age of 13. And so, because of that experience, you know, the need there is among foster children.
Marianne Tiger (08:52):
And I knew what it was like to be lonely and forsaken abandoned, and having to move constantly and living with strangers and, you know, understand everything that’s going on. But in all that, you know, God protected me and kept me from a lot of bad things that could have happened even more so, but that’s why I had heart and compassion to help people, to children, to reach them and reach them with the love of Jesus and help them in any way I can in the time that I have them. And then,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:19):
And so when you have foster children, you are like the legal guardian for them. So you’re responsible for them. And you also have the opportunity to, to minister, to them, to talk to them about Jesus. And so you can bring the foster children to church with you. You can have devotions with them prayer time in the evening, did you?
Marianne Tiger (09:42):
I did. They were at church two to three times a week and I had my girls in the Missionettes class and we prayed and, you know, did other things that they needed, like some counseling that I knew they needed got that organized for them to help them spiritually and also mentally, and then, you know, help them to get them. Cause since I’m a teacher, get them up to level for their academics, because a lot of them are like way below level. So every way, and physically we would go to the park and exercise and do fun stuff. So try to help them in every mind, spirit and Bali body to help these children thrive and to grow in Jesus.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:16):
Being a foster mother is such a unique opportunity to evangelize because foster children often come with great needs. They come out of very difficult situations sometimes where there has been abused, where there has been serious issues. Sometimes a parent has died. Sometimes they feel unwanted. And so they’re coming to you and, and often children can, can act out when things are going on in their lives. So it takes a lot of patience, but it’s an opportunity to evangelize as a parent where you’re, you’re planting into their, their lives and tell us, was it easy or was it difficult?
Marianne Tiger (11:04):
Challenging? It was definitely challenging cause I’m single. So it was just me. I’m mom and dad, and had a few friends in the house,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:11):
But you still are bringing these children into your house.
Marianne Tiger (11:16):
Yes. And there’s a big need and we need more people to step up, to take in foster kids to do this, you know, evangelism and help these children because you know, they have nowhere to go, then they’re going to be on the streets and that’s horrible and things like that. And we know the truth. And so what better way to reach these children with the truth of the gospel, with the love of Jesus, to take them in, to help them while they need it.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:38):
And you may be the only person that they’ve ever experienced to really show them love. And so you have such a unique opportunity to be able to, to sow into their lives, to plant a seed of the gospel to, to talk to them about Jesus and also to minister to them. How did you deal with, with abusive situations or people that some of the kids that came to you that were really hurting? How, how did you help to heal? Those hurts?
Marianne Tiger (12:06):
Right. Listening to their stories is a big thing because sometimes some children may be guarded and not open up until they feel like they can trust you, but they always seem to, Oh, my mom did this or my dad did this and this happened and you just, you know, listen and just amazement and, you know, just sadness and just, you know, in sharing my own testimony, the Bible says that we overcome by the word of our testimony and the blood of the lamb, sharing my own testimony of how Jesus helped me and healed me of some sadness and loneliness and that rejection and abandonment spirit. And so how he helped me by spending time with him in prayer and worshiping really did a lot of healing in my heart and growing, you know, with my walk with God and just encouraging them to do that themselves and that God loves them and their special things like that. And just giving them the opportunity to hear the truth, you know, at church with other people sharing the same thing. And
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:57):
That’s awesome. Now I get the impression that you are not super rich. So I see you, you go on these, these different short term missions trips, and, and how are you able to afford them? You, you, you work hard while you’re here. You’re a very hard worker. And then you take time off from work to, for the sacrifice of going over to Africa, in ministering to people, how are you able to do
Marianne Tiger (13:23):
Well where there’s a will, there is a way. And so I’m a tither and I’m a giver. And I support different ministries that do wonderful work overseas and in the U S as well. But I worked three jobs. I work at a, as a substitute teacher at a Christian school here in town. And I work as a nanny and take care of kids. And then I work at a nursing home. And so all these three jobs give me the flexibility when I need to get off for a mission trip. I always have favor to get off. Now, if I did real, you know, full time teaching because I’m a teacher, then it would be harder to get off. So I choose to have these jobs where I can have the flexibility and then I just work extra all the time. And I save and, you know, sacrifice, I don’t have cable.
Marianne Tiger (14:01):
I don’t have like internet. I just have like when you pick it up from when you go places and things like that, hotspot or whatever. And so I sacrificed by saving on those things and then just, you know, being wise with your money and, you know, we don’t need to have all of everything that we ever could ever want. Like I had was the, do I really need this? Or if I didn’t buy this, then I can use the money on a mission trip and things like that. And just, you know, really weighing what you’re spending your money on. Like my goal and my heart and passion is mission. So what do I have to do to save money, to work, to be able to, you know, buy these plane tickets and all the resources to bring over there, to bless the people and things like that, because it brings me joy to give. So I’d rather do that than go to Starbucks, which I don’t like their coffee anyway, but spending $5 on one coffee, people do it two or three times a day, or at least once a day that adds up. So people would just not, you know, go out to eat as much and set some of that money aside for missions. Or if they’re not called to go then to give it to those who are called to go so we can fund the gospel and help spread Jesus to everybody.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:03):
I really admire you Marianne with your dedication to serving Jesus and your enthusiasm for missions and for helping the, these foster kids. I mean, you are a woman of God and you have a heart for helping people. And I really admire how you have sacrificed in order to, to be ministering, to go on these trips, to minister, to people. It, it really shows your heart is for Jesus and for, for the great commission. And so I commend you for that. Give us one testimony of something that God did on one of your recent trips,
Marianne Tiger (15:48):
Just praying for people and seeing them, the power of God touched them. They just break down and cry and things like that always touches my heart. And just hearing, you know, some trips in the past, like in India or different places where the lady said, I had a dream last night and white people came to our village and they never had white people come. And just, you know, I saw him, I saw him in my vision and my dream is God confirming himself to the people. And then they’re there and they hear the gospel. And then, you know, they prayed it for salvation, things like that, little things like divine appointments with people, just connections where, you know, you, you get to talk to them, administer and you connect and things like that. And then people, when you leave, you want to keep in touch like on Facebook or WhatsApp or something like that. So I’ve been still what, since I’ve been home the last two weeks or so, talking to some of the ladies and sending them encouraging things and encouraging them to evangelism and carry the torch and things like that. And so I like seeing fruit, you know, fruit that remains and things like that, people that are hungry for God and that reach out to still connect and things like that and grow
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:51):
Well. Maryanne, if you have been able to find your ministry and you’re able to go on all these missions trips, then I think anyone can become a missionary. Anyone can go and tell people about Jesus. Anyone can find their niche, their, their assignment, their calling, to, to reach people for Jesus. And so thank you so much for being on the podcast is great to have you with us.
Marianne Tiger (17:15):
Thank you for having me. I bless you.
