Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:00):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast. I’m Daniel King and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus. Today I have a very special guest, world renowned musician and leader of a great music group called Cyprès, Zach?

Zach Blickens (00:16):
Yes sir.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:21):
Well, thank you so much for joining me on the Evangelism podcast.

Zach Blickens (00:24):
Yeah, no, it’s a privilege to be here and it’s been great hanging out with you in Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, which is where we’ve been.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:30):
Yeah, this has been a wonderful three country tour and in all three countries I’ve really seen God use you and your daughter. Praise Jesus. And your wife is here to just, God has used you in such a tremendous way through music. Praise God as a tool for reaching people. Praise God. Talk to me a little bit about how God can use music to evangelize.

Zach Blickens (00:54):
Well, it’s interesting. I got my start in worship right? That was God rescued me and basically I discovered worship. I discovered that I was a musician beforehand trained. I was actually trained in opera, which is crazy, but we’re a pop band now. We don’t sound like that. And I got my start and one of the things that God used was worship. And it’s just this awesome focus. And throughout my journey with Jesus, he just began stirring in my heart that I just knew he began to speak to me and I just became convinced that he had called me and my whole family, the vision spread to my whole family was to actually just set foot on every nation and used music in the spoken word to present the message of Jesus. And I think music is this incredible, incredible tool. I mean, because the reality is everyone likes music, everyone likes different kinds of music.

(01:43):
And it’s interesting, when we started out, we kind of started as kind of a little more traditional, almost like almost like a folk influence worship when we would go out. But I started to realize that there’s an incredible power that comes when you can. We’ve switched over kind of to pop almost in EDM kind of sound. There’s something powerful that happens when you can draw this crowd, engage people, and just basically our goal is to throw the biggest party in town. And it does incredible things as far as actually drawing people, but also music when it’s focused on Jesus. And when you can be intentional with that, it can actually draw hearts to Jesus. So we look at ourselves as the way John the Baptist came saying, prepare the way for the Lord. Our heart is to prepare hearts and minds and draw people for the message as it’s shared the simple message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. So I actually think that for us, I know it’s what we’re called to, but I think that music is an incredibly powerful tool. It’s got to be intentional. And there are a lot of things, there are a lot of mistakes we’ve made and a lot of things we’ve learned over the years. But I think music has an incredible power to draw. People

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:47):
Talk to me about how musicians can be intentional about sharing the gospel, because sometimes musicians get up, they sing their songs and they say, I want everyone to just say, praise Jesus. And they think that is enough of the gospel. But really you have the audience, you should take the opportunity to really communicate how someone can be saved. So what advice would you give to a young musician who maybe wants to use their music in evangelism?

Zach Blickens (03:19):
Sure. And I think that’s a really good question and a really good distinction because the truth is obviously there are lots of functions in the body of Christ. Like I said, there’s discipleship in the church and all that stuff. But our job as the church, the way I see it’s two things. It’s to introduce people to Jesus and it’s to help raise them up as disciples and teach ’em how to follow Jesus. And everyone’s different. But for us, we are convinced that it is crucial to use this for evangelism. And I think what’s really interesting is that I didn’t know that when I started, I didn’t have that conviction. I just knew that I was supposed to go play music. And also that I was a speaker, I talked about Jesus. But early on I felt like God spoke to my heart and challenged me that every time we will play any show, as long as God opens the door and God says yes, but we have to someone even in our writer, that someone in every show has to share the simple gospel. And for me, I just started out of that conviction, started sharing the simple gospel. I mean, it’s simple, right? It can be 30 seconds, it can take three hours, but it can also be 30 seconds. Alright,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:24):
Give me the 32nd version of the

Zach Blickens (04:26):
Gospel. Sure. 32nd version. And I think it’s so beautiful and this is the way what I’ve boiled it down to, but I think there is a God, he’s good. He created us for a relationship with him. That’s the first thing. The second thing that’s really important is to know that every single one of us Bible says all have sinned and fall short to the glory of God. So we’ve separated ourself from God by the bad things, the sin we’ve done. And obviously the good news, the gospel is that God, when he looked at us in that situation, broken and separated it, instead of judging us like we deserved, he sent his son Jesus to die and pay a price that only he could pay. He died, he rose from the dead in order to purchase our forgiveness, our freedom, and our reconnection with God. That to me is the simple gospel.

(05:06):
And for us, it’s also important to say it really is easy to say yes to. Gs as AB, C, admitting we are broken, believing Gs is who he says he is. He’s God, he rose from the dead and calling on his name, committing our lives to him. So that to me is the simple gospel and we’re passionate that that be shared by somebody every single time. And once I started doing that, I started seeing people come to Jesus and I was like, oh, maybe I’m an evangel. I was like, it was that sort of thing. But for me, I think if as we grow in our comfort in sharing that, I feel like one of the biggest things we can do is, especially in these big festivals, is to remember that the whole purpose of this festival is to introduce people to Jesus. And there is a speaker, you or Keith Cook or Reed Saunders or some of these other amazing communicators, their job is to seal the deal, is to give the invitation and all that stuff.

(06:00):
And we can either look at it as it’s about us and hey, thanks so much for coming. Or we can take the attention that we have gotten from the people and we can point it to Jesus and we can point it and say, whatever you do, don’t miss this message. And I feel like that one simple shift of it’s not about me, it’s not about me being a rockstar, which is always tempting, but it’s about this message. I feel like just that simple shift is a massive thing young musicians can learn and do. And we’ve gotten incredible opportunities just because that’s our commitment, if that, does that make sense?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:29):
One of the things that I really like about your ministry is you’re a team player. You don’t come with a big ego, which sometimes musicians deal with

Zach Blickens (06:39):
That. We all fight it, we all, yeah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:41):
But you recognize that you have a part in the presenting of the gospel using the music to draw people and then working together with other communicators. And you have been really a part of the team of On the Go, which is the ministry of Keith Cook for quite a few years. And one of the things I think is so valuable is mentorship and coming under the wing of someone who’s experienced in evangelism to help us to sharpen our message and get better at presenting the gospel. So with your long relationship with Keith Cope, what are some of the things that he’s helped you with that have made you a better evangelist?

Zach Blickens (07:24):
Oh my gosh. I mean, I’m so grateful. I feel like in my life I’ve been given the incredible, the answer to cry of my heart. He’s given me such incredible fathers, and Keith has been one of those fathers. And for me, I feel like I came in as definitely as a worship artist and communicator, but really I feel like I learned everything. And honestly, as a young up and coming evangelist when I started and stuff, I feel like one of the most valuable things for me was to first of all hear the wisdom that comes from him and not think that I have all figured out. I might have had a lot of experience in the church, or maybe not, which I did, but I didn’t have any experience in the street. And I’ve told people I feel like everyone should have to learn the way I did, which is basically you get thrown on the street in Africa and say, you have five minutes, earn your crowd, share Jesus and give a call.

(08:15):
Don’t lose your crowd. And I feel like it’s terrifying, terrifying, but just facing that and being given those opportunities. And so I feel like humility is one of the crucial things in, and you have to choose humility because you always think that’s when humility really is so evident is when you think you know what the best way is and you have someone experienced and you have to say, you know what, I’m going to trust you on this. And so I feel like that learning from the experience and then learning how to interact with the pastors and learning how to all those things, I feel like it’s been crucial. But I feel like I learned just I was just a baby and I feel like I learned everything from being able to surrender and say, okay, God, you’ve given me this mentor. Let me learn from him. And there’s just so much, so different being, it’s so different when it comes to engaging the crowd, drawing the crowd, doing that stuff. It’s so different from what we’re used to, whether it’s played in a secular, whether you played in clubs or whether you’ve played in church. It really is different. And I’ve learned a lot. I learned everything.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:19):
Another thing I really like about you is that you involve your entire family in the ministry. Your daughters have been singing with you, you’re writing songs together as a family. Your wife is right there right alongside of you helping singing and doing an administration. Why do you feel it’s important to involve the family in the ministry that you’re called to?

Zach Blickens (09:42):
My gosh, actually the short, I don’t know, I’m kind of stumbling over my words because for me it’s like this is my dream.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:54):
It really comes out of you, it’s part of you.

Zach Blickens (09:57):
It’s like we didn’t necessarily go into this being like, okay, we’re going to involve the family. I just love my family so much. And we all developed a desire to travel and go out. And so Kayla, who is basically our lead singer, she’s my youngest daughter and she has been doing this since I think she was 11 years old. And we just go like, Hey, let’s come to Africa or whatever. And so it started that way and then the girls on their own struggled through their own things and prayed. But basically this vision that God gave us, gave me has become theirs. And Kayla just heard God at a young age being calling toward evangelist as an evangelist. And then so we’ve started throwing her in. She’s now just an incredible communicator and it’s just basically, it’s a dream come true for me, but I wouldn’t know. How do you involve your family? I’m just like, love ’em, walk through ’em, have grace and the tough things and do that. How

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:55):
Do you balance family and ministry?

Zach Blickens (10:59):
I think for us, one of the most important things we could do to answer that question is for me, what we do is really, really awesome. And it’s incredible privilege, but it’s also exhausting. For example, I love this country. It’s also the hottest place I’ve ever been in my life. So humid and hot and beautiful, but it’s exhausting. And so one of the things that we felt God kind of challenged us to do early on, and my oldest daughter really challenged me in this, was really to not just talk about Sabbath but to arrest that season of intentional rest, but to really do it. So I feel like one of the most valuable things we can do is when we go on the field we go hard, but then one those times in between the tours and things like that, we really prioritize allowing ourselves to be recharged and refreshed and be a family.

(11:49):
The other thing I think is so important is the intentionality of loving conflict. And that is not fleeing from conflict, getting our stuff right, because there’s so many things, especially on the road that can offend us or hurt us or I tell people in production in the studio, there’s a lot of tears and a lot of them are mine because we’re all sensitive, we’re all musicians and all those stereotypes are kind of true, but the intentionality of just going and saying, Hey, this hurt me. Can we walk through this? And processing that forgiving and repenting and clearing those relationships. I think that all those things are, especially in the fire and the heat of what evangelism is, it’s really high pressure.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:29):
Now how many countries have you your family been to so

Zach Blickens (12:33):
Far? Yeah, so as far as we’ve been to a lot more than this, but this is Cambodia right now is country number 40.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:40):
Wow. Congratulations.

Zach Blickens (12:41):
Amazing. Yeah. Praise Jesus. And so over that time, you might not know about the band in America, but I tell people in a couple of small villages in Asia we’re rock stars, but it’s been hundreds of thousands of people we’ve gotten a chance to be in front of and share Jesus with. And we’ve seen tens of thousands of people come to Jesus probably more by this point. And I tell people it’s like I get to see things in a week that sometimes people might not get to see in a lifetime. And I do not take that for granted. I love watching people come to g. I love people coming from death to life, seeing that. The other

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:12):
Day we were in Thailand and we went to a prison, there were a thousand prisoners there. And you grab their attention singing a song about the goodness of God. Yeah, praise God. Let’s finish this interview up with a few bars from, so good. Can you just do a little

Zach Blickens (13:32):
Bit for us? So the English version goes, you

Cyprès (13:34):
Are so good, so good. You are so good, so good. You are so good. So good to all.

Zach Blickens (13:42):
And that’s the English. And we usually translate, I think we’ve translated in that in probably 30 different languages. And it’s so simple. It’s a song that it’s not even on Spotify anymore. I don’t think it’s on YouTube anymore. We originally did it and then we kind of pulled it as it was from our old catalog, but it’s been a song that has gotten a lot of mileage. So I praise God

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:01):
That’s a fun song. And I thought it was great at the prison because just pointing people to the goodness of God.

Zach Blickens (14:08):
And what we say too, it is become part of our thing that we say, right? But it’s the saying we have that God is good all the time. What’s so powerful about that is that God’s good when we’re doing well, but God’s also good in our brokenness. God’s also good. He’s good. He doesn’t change depending on how we are. And he’s so constant. He’s so good. And so we love to sing that. And it’s so funny seeing prisoners in prison. They’re our captive audience, but they’re in a dark, tough spot. They’re incarcerated. But to still in that prison see them being like, you are so good and giving that glory to God. It’s just such a powerful thing to see.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:45):
So if someone wants to hear more of your music or find out more about you or maybe support you on one of your mission trips, help send you to one of these countries. What’s your website? What’s your YouTube channel? How can they find your music?

Zach Blickens (15:00):
Yeah, so our name is Cyprus. It’s actually spelled, it’s pronounced like the English, but it’s spelled like the French and that’s important. So it’s one E and one s. So it’s C-Y-P-R-E-S. And our website is Cyprus music.com. And our YouTube channel is YouTube at slash whatever cypress music. And so yeah, we would love to check us out and every time I do like to say it’s important to people if you do like our music, if you don’t, cool, great, that’s fine. But if you do like our music and the message, then anytime that you can share that with a friend or repost it or something like that, or just follow us on Spotify or anything as simple as that, it really does help us to reach people eventually with the message of Jesus. And that’s what we’re absolutely committed to do. And you can, if people are listening and they’re interested, please pray for us. Pray for Daniel. And it’s been a privilege hanging with you and actually seeing, we’ve been in the Crazyness, we’ve been together

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:56):
Facebook friends for a while, so now we get to hang out and I mean now we’re good friends. We’ve been three countries.

Zach Blickens (16:03):
We sweat a lot

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:03):
Together. We sweat after you sweat a lot, then you’re good fit. You stick right here. Yeah, I love your music, but even more, I love your heart for Jesus. Oh, praise Jesus and your heart for reaching people. Oh, praise Jesus. Thank you so much for being on the Evangelism

Zach Blickens (16:18):
Podcast. Thank you so much for having me. And thank you for all you do and God bless you, brother. I really appreciate it. Thanks for what you do.

Evangelism Podcast Host (00:00):
Have you ever wondered how to raise money for your ministry? In this episode, we’ll be talking about practical tips and steps that you can take to raise support for your ministry so that you can effectively evangelize and share the gospel.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:24):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now, here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:48):
Amen. Alright, well, we’re going to talk about how to raise money for your ministry. How many of you want to learn how to raise money for your ministry? And so, just like yesterday, this is going to be very practical teaching. And, and so one time I asked a minister you know, how are, do you do everything? He says, well, God just does it. But then I noticed that behind the scenes, he, they, his ministry was doing lots of things in order to make their ministry successful. And so I wanted to learn how do you make a ministry successful? How do you raise money for ministry? And TL Osborne, who we’ve talked about this morning, he said that if you don’t have money, then you don’t have a ministry. And so, in order to have a ministry, we need to have money, because in order to get on an airplane, you have to be able to buy the plane ticket.

(01:47):
In order to rent a sound system, you gotta give them money in order to rent generators and do publicity and do television. And, and to feed the hungry, everything that you’re called to do, you need to have money in ministry. And so I wrote a book, it’s called How to Raise Money for Your Ministry. And this book, it’s a small book, but I’m selling it for only a thousand dollars because with this book, you can raise millions for the gospel <laugh>. I, I actually, I brought a few copies with me, but they were all sold out on Monday. Yeah. And so I know many of you didn’t get a chance to get it. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to send Ms. Eden the, the books, and she will put it up. So all of you can have a copy of this book and you can download it and, and because I want to give this book to you as, as my gift to you. Thank you.

(02:48):
All right. So we’re gonna just go through some of the concepts in this book. And in this book, I’ve identified 10 words that will help you to be an effective fundraiser. So the first word is the word boldness. Everyone say boldness. Boldness. Now, I think sometimes when it comes to raising money for your ministry, there is like this yuck feeling that people feel, they, they, they feel kind of like asking for money makes me feel yuck on the inside. Like, like I they, they kind of feel embarrassed to, to ask for money because we’re taught to be self-sufficient and we’re taught to, to be able to take care of ourselves. And so asking for money sometimes might feel a little bit difficult. But DL Moody, he said that blessed are the fundraisers for in heaven. They shall sit next to the martyrs.

(03:44):
Sometimes fundraising can be just as difficult as being martyred, but I want you to know that if God has given you a vision, God also has provision for your vision. And so there’s a, a great missionary evangelist. His name is David Shiley has a ministry in, in Dallas, Texas, a Rockwall, Texas area. And when I was younger, he, he mentored me a lot. And one thing he said to me really helped me out a lot. He says, sometimes people feel that they wear two different hats when they’re leading an organization. One hat is the ministry hat. So they put on their ministry hat, and they go out and preach the gospel. They, they get lots of results, and, and God moves. And they said they love wearing that hat. And then they also have to wear this fundraising hat. And so they put on the fundraising hat, and it, it feels difficult.

(04:40):
And, and they’re, they’re going and trying to raise money and it’s like, like pulling teeth and, and, and they don’t like the fundraising hat. And so he said what really helped him is that he realized that he actually was not wearing two hats. He said, what I was actually doing is I’m only wearing one hat because it is the fundraising that makes the ministry possible. And so, without having the fundraising aspect of what you’re doing, you’re not going to be able to have the, the ministry aspect. And, and so you’re not wearing two hats. You’re actually wearing one hat. And so when you’re asking for money, you’re not actually asking for money for yourself. This will help you get over the fear of feeling uncomfortable asking for money. You’re not asking for money for yourself. You’re asking for money for the people that you’re called to minister to.

(05:34):
Amen. And so, my goal is to lead millions of people to Jesus. And so when I go to a businessman and I ask him, say, could you please give me some money to help me? I’m not actually asking for myself. I’m asking on behalf of the massive crowds of people that have never heard about Jesus. And so I’m asking for eternity’s sake. I’m asking for what God wants to do in their lives. And, and so if you get uncomfortable with asking just remember who you’re asking for. You’re asking for the people that God has called you to minister to. And so sometimes there’s negative pushback. When you go out and fundraise, I wanna read you an email that I received. I, I sent out emails. Everyone I, I meet, I try to collect their emails. And so somehow this guy got on my email list and I sent him an email asking for money for one of the Crusades.

(06:32):
And this was his response to me. He says, hello, I received your email about your ministry. I’ve never heard of your ministry, and I’ve never asked to be contacted by your ministry. Don’t send me any more emails asking for money. Remember what Jesus did to the money changers in the temple? I’m sure you have an understanding. The faith God asked us to have in him to provide for our needs. You should try having faith in God for your finances instead of sending out unsolicited emails to people asking for money. Thank you for taking me off your email list. And please represent the kingdom of God with more discretion and respect for our heavenly Father. Wow. Isn’t that a lovely religious email to re, to receive? But the man’s angry words didn’t bother me. Why? Because in response to that same email, another person gave me a donation of $5,000.

(07:21):
And that kind of, that, that softened my heart. I was like, that’s okay. It was good that I sent out that email. So James four verse two says, you do not have, because you do not ask. Matthew seven, seven through eight says, ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find, knock in the door will be open to you. For everyone who asks recedes, he who seeks finds and into him who knocks the door will be open. And so there’s a book that I recommend that you get. The name of the book is People Raising. It’s by William Dylan. And he explains that there are three approaches in Christianity to raising money. And the first approach was used by George Mu Mueller, who had orphanages in great Britain. And he never asked for money. He had a policy that he never shared the needs of the orphanages.

(08:15):
He never asked for money. And so one day they didn’t have any food to feed the orphans. And so he told all the orphans, gather around the table and let’s pray. And so they all gather around the table, they take hands together, they bound their heads. And as they began to pray and say, Lord, bless this food, which we are about to eat, amen. When they said, amen, someone knocked on the door and said, I just felt like God told me to bring this basket full of food to you. All right. So that’s a great miracle. So that’s the, the, the Mueller way of raising money. And then another way of raising money was Hudson Taylor. He didn’t directly solicit for money, but he did believe in sharing the need with people. So he was a, a missionary over to China, and he would write home and he would say, we have these needs.

(09:04):
And then he would see that the churches would help meet the needs. But then there was another evangelist. His name was DL Moody, and he was up in Chicago and DL Moody before he became an evangelist. He was a businessman. And so DL Moody was very bold in asking businessmen for money. And so he’d go and knock on their door and he would say, I am feeding the children of Chicago. Can you give me money? And they would give him money and, and say, how much do you need? And they’d write him out a check for $10,000. And back in those days, $10,000 was a lot of money. And, and so he was very aggressive in his fundraising in the Billy Graham Museum Wheaton College up in Illinois, there is a fundraising letter that was written by DL Moody. And he had 200 secretaries who worked to type out letters asking people for money.

(09:59):
And this, this fundraising letter, it was actually a thank you letter that he, he sent to a Sunday school of, of girls that were from the age of seven to 12. And he says, thank you so much for collecting your pennies to help me preach the gospel. You have collected 53 cents, and I want to send you this letter to say, thank you for helping me to preach the gospel. And so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any one of these three methods, but as for me, the, the the way that that I operate is closer to how DL Moody operated than the the Mueller method. If you have the faith to do it, go for it. But I think that if you share the need with people, people will respond. And so I’d encourage you to be bold in sharing your needs. The second word that I want to talk about is the word source.

(11:00):
And it’s important to understand that God is your source. And so you have to keep your eyes focused on God, because if you take your eyes off of God and focus on people, you’re going to be disappointed. The people that you think will give big, the people that you say, surely this person I’ve known for a long time, they, they’re wealthy, they can do something significant to help me. Usually it’s not those people that will give. And and you’ll be disappointed if you start to think that a person or a particular church or a group will be the ones that will meet your need. And so you have to keep your eyes focused on God. God is your source. And so I remember when I took my first mission trip, my, my parents were missionaries in Mexico, and then when I was about 13 or 14, I, I heard about a mission trip that was going down to Venezuela.

(12:04):
And the cost to go on this missions trip was about $700. And I went to my mom and dad, I said, you know, I would really like to go on this missions trip. And, and so they said, well, if you’re gonna go on this missions trip you need to raise money. And so I went and I, I wrote out letters to my aunts and my uncles and, and my friends, and like anyone I could think of that, that would gimme money. And, and so I sent it off and, and it was a miracle. God brought in the money that I needed for that first missions trip. And then the next year I wanted to go on another missions trip. And the second year, the, the cost was about $1,200. And so I had to stretch my faith. And, and then every year I started doing different missions trips to, to different places.

(12:49):
I, I got to go to St. Petersburg, Russia when pastor Billy Joe Doherty was doing great evangelistic crusades in the Olympic stadium there in, in St. Petersburg, Russia. That was when I was about 14. And so I went and, and, and I was raising my, and, and so God increased my faith. I started small, but God increased my faith. And then I started doing crusades. And so I went from needing a thousand or $2,000 to instead eating $10,000. And, and so that was a big step of faith. And then we started do bigger crusades, and then we needed $20,000 and $30,000. And, and so as you continue to see God be faithful, you’ll realize that he is the God of abundance. And you have to keep your eyes focused on God. Don’t get distracted looking here or looking there. God’s will is God’s bill.

(13:46):
Hudson Taylor said, God’s work then God’s way will never lack God’s supply. The third word is the word relationships. So relationships are, are very important. Everything in the kingdom of God rises and falls on relationships. And I remember when I was in Bible school at at Victory Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma TL Osborne had given his building to victory to use as their Bible store, as their Bible school. And he still had his offices there. And so I knew I wanted to be an evangelist, and so I really wanted to meet Tia Osborne. And so I went into his office and talked to his secretary. He says, I am young, but I am called by God to be an evangelist. Can I meet Dr. Osborne? And, and she says, oh, Dr. Osborne is very busy. He is traveling. I’m sorry, but it’s not possible for you to set up a meeting with him.

(14:50):
And so I went the next day and bugged her again. And then I went the next day. And like I was in Bible school for like, you know, six months, and like every day I would go bug her. We became very good friends. And I would, I would always, and she’d say, Nope, he still cannot meet with you. And so like, well, I want you to know. And so finally I had a friend, his name was Dominic Russo. He was on my floor at oral Roberts University. And he told me, oh, he says, my dad went to Rama when he was at Rama. He became friends with Kevin and Leslie McNulty, and they are helping to set up crusades for TL Osborne. He says, maybe my dad could introduce you to that. And, and so Dominic Russo’s father, who’s also named Dominic Russo, introduced me to Kevin McNulty and he said TL Osborne is doing a crusade down in Costa Rica.

(15:38):
And I said, can I come? And so they invited me to come. And, and so even though I lived in Tulsa and TL Osborne lived in Tulsa, I had to fly to Costa Rica to meet him. And he was, when I finally did get to meet him, he was so gracious and, and so kind and, and spent so much time with me explaining how he did crusades over the years. And I learned so much from it. And, and from that was able to build a relationship with Dr. Osborne. And, and then towards the end of his life I had another evangelist friend who wanted to meet Dr. Osborne. And he said, can you arrange the meeting? I said, yes, I think I could call him. He said, but instead of just introducing you to Dr. Osborne let’s invite 30 evangelists to come. And so we, we had 30 evangelists come, and Dr. Osborne came and sat in our living room and spent time with us. And, and all the evangelists had lots of questions to ask him. And so we asked the first question, and Dr. Osborne, he says, he says, oh, he says, I, I’m old. I don’t know anything about that. You are young. You, you, God has given you all the answers. You know, he says, but I do have one thought. And, and so then he talked for three and a half hours, <laugh>.

(16:48):
And but everything in the kingdom of God comes from relationships. And, and so it’s so important to build relationships and, and to have friends realize that every relationship is I important. It’s also important to paddle your canoe in many different rivers because one church or one group of churches, one denomination, is not going to be big enough to support the size of the vision that God has given you. And so if you just focus on one church, and they’re your only source of support, that’s great, until the time comes where they say, I’m sorry, we’ve had a meeting with our board and we cannot support you any longer. And so you, you’ve gotta paddle your canoe in many different waters. And so I joined different organizations and different groups, go to different conferences, build relationships in many different circles, because God is going to call you to do something that’s so big.

(17:53):
If you just focus in on one source and thing, everything is gonna come from one source. You’re limiting what God is going to be able to do in your ministry. And so don’t burn bridges and take time to work to develop important relationships. On Sunday, I came a day early and I preached to the church in, in Plant City, Florida, which is like about 45 minutes from here. And the, the, the pastor there, he’s been a friend for, for many years. And so when I told him I was coming to bootcamp, he says, oh, I want you to come to my church. And so we looked at the calendar this Sunday is going to be Easter. He says, I can’t have you preach on Easter that we’re doing a special outreach. He says, but why don’t you come the week before?

(18:39):
So I came the week before, well, I preached Plant City, and then I have a, a partner who has been very faithful supporting me for a hundred dollars a month. They’ve been very faithful for, for quite a few years. And I haven’t had much interaction with them, and I knew that they lived down in Sarasota. And so I just said, you know, that’s like an hour from Plant City. Let me just drive down there and, and, and I want to come and see your family and spend some time with you. So I went down, I didn’t say anything about fundraising or anything. I was just saying, you know, hi, how are you? How’s your family? How’s your son? How’s your, you know, what are you up to? And just spending time with him. And so when I left, he, he pulled out his checkbook and wrote out a check for $2,500 to send with me.

(19:27):
I said, thank you very much. I’ll come visit more often, <laugh>, you know but it’s that relationship that’s important to, to be able to, to maintain relationships with people that, that give to you. So everyone say relationship, relationship, the next word I want to talk about is the word vision. Vision is what drives fundraising. Not need, people do not want to give to your needs, but they will give to your vision. If you, if you write someone and say, oh, I’ve got a credit card Bill come and due, and I really need $50,000 right away, you know, in order to pay, like no one, no one’s going to give to that. But if you write them and say, I’m going to be going to Tanzania, we’re gonna be preaching to, to thousands of people, we’re going to be going from school to school, and we’re going to be leading the children to Jesus, and, and the cost of doing this is going to be $5,000, would you invest and help us to raise the money to do this?

(20:27):
That is something that people can get on board with. And so my vision has been winning souls. When I was 15 years old, I was reading the success book, if you wanna Be Successful, you write down your goals. And I wrote down the goal, I Daniel King wanna lead a million people to Jesus before I turned 30 years of age. And, and so that became the driving force of my life. And so everywhere I, I share that vision, my goal was to lead a million people to Jesus. And, and, and if you help me, I can lead another million people to Jesus. And, and so people give to me because they know the, the, the, the vision. And if people remember one thing about me, I want them to remember Daniel King. He’s an evangelist who’s going after a million souls. Like, and so people will introduce me, you know, maybe I, I met them years before, and, and, and, and they don’t remember anything, but they remember the vision.

(21:19):
The vision is to lead a million souls to heaven, him, and it’s vision that people can really get behind. The next word is the word communication. It’s important to communicate, to be diligent in your communication. Remember that it is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease out of sight is usually out of mind. Most people are not thinking about you on a regular basis. I, I hate to break it to you, but most people are not thinking about you. And it’s not because you’re not important to them, but it’s because their lives are just so busy. And so you have to do something to remind them that you exist. And so always be talking about your vision. If you don’t talk about your vision, no one else will talk about it. You have the greatest thing in the world. You might have the greatest thing in the world going on, but if no one knows what you’re doing, how can you sustain it?

(22:22):
And so, some of the ways that I keep communicating with people is through newsletters, through e emails on social media. One of the great keys to raising money is taking lots of pictures. One time I had written a book on healing, and I, I took it to TL Osborne to show him, and he looked through it, and he, he gave it back to me, almost threw it back at me. And he says, where are the pictures? He says, when you take a picture of a miracle, the miracle happens twice, once in the life of the person who received the miracle. And again, when you show the miracle, which God has done, so if you look at Teal Osborne’s picture books, in every book, there are many pictures of all of the crusades, the people that were healed, the pastor’s conferences, the sound systems that he would give away.

(23:21):
And so you need to take lots of pictures. And so today I have a volunteer, Ladner, come up here, give him a great big hand. And yesterday he took a couple of pictures with his cell phone and sent it to me. And today he says, would you like me to use your big camera? So he’s using the big camera, and he’s taking pictures to help me fundraise to say, I am training evangelists today. And so let’s get a good picture. Come, come up here. And I want everybody to, to put your hands up in the air. Actually, let’s stand up. Can you stand up? Everybody stand up. Let’s just get a good picture here.

(24:00):
Awesome, wonderful. So every time you go preach, I always tell people, I wanna show your beautiful faces to my mother. Everybody stand up and, and I’ll even pull up my phone and say, you know, everybody just smile and take their picture. Get a selfie there with the crowd, because it’s important to show people what God is doing. Take lots of pictures. The next word I want to talk about is the word persistence. Everyone say persistence. Persistence. One of my friends wrote a fundraising letter and he sent it out to a hundred people. And he was really disappointed because only one or two people responded to the fundraising letter, and he got really discouraged, and he gave up. And I told him, I said, listen, you gave up too soon. If you would write back to those same people again, send them a report of what God has done, give them a call, send them a text, give them an email.

(24:57):
He said, if you are persistent, you will be able to raise money. But if you just do one thing one time and there’s no response, you haven’t been persistent enough, you need to keep going, keep going. Winston Churchill was once asked to give a speech at a boy’s school, and the headmaster gave him this long introduction. Winston Churchill, he’s the one who saved Great Britain during World War ii, and he gave all of his credentials in the books that he wrote, and he was the prime minister of England. And after this long in introduction, Churchill stood up and told the boys in eight word speech. He said, never, never, never, never, never, never give up.

(25:49):
And then he went and sat back down again. But what a tremendous thing to remember that if you don’t give up, eventually you’re going to win. Calvin Coolidge, who was the president of the United States, he said, nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not, nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan press on has solved and will always solve the problems of the human. And so don’t expect any easy solution or magic key for raising money. If I had a magic key for, for raising money, I can just give it to you all right now, and, and we could be finished. But you just, you have to be persistent. You gotta keep going and determine, this is what God has called me to do, and come hell or high water, I’m going to do it, and I’m not going to give up.

(26:56):
No matter what happens, I’m gonna keep on keeping on and I’m not going to stop. Amen. Amen. Amen. So there’s a, a really great business book. I like reading business books. I, I, I do a lot of theological reading, and then I also do a lot of reading from, from business books. And so one of the best business books is a book by Jim Collins that’s called Good to Great. And in it, he explains a principle that I like to call the, the Merry-Go-Round principle. And he, he calls it the Flywheel principle, but I call it the Merry-Go-Round principle, because more people know what that is. And so if you can imagine a merry-go-round on a children’s playground, okay? And so I’ve got two kids and they like being on merry-go-round. So I’ll, I’ll put them on the merry-go-round and I’ll start to push the merry-go-round.

(27:43):
And like, at first it’s very difficult to push, and so I have to strain and push, you know, it hasn’t been greased enough. And so you gotta, you gotta work really hard to push it. And so you, you work hard and you, you start pushing and, and then you push again, and then you, you push again, and then you push again. And after a little bit, you know, it’s starting to go around pretty good. And, and, and then you can keep it going, and it’s much easier to keep it going, and then it goes faster. And, and so when it’s going fast, you can just go like this and it really doesn’t take much effort. You can keep that thing going fast without much effort, but it’s in the early stages that you really have to work at it, and you have to work really hard at, at getting it going.

(28:28):
And so it’s the early stages of your ministry that are going to be the most difficult because to, to get the merry go round to start turning, it takes a lot of work, a lot of persistence. You gotta keep going. And then after you have your ministry going, you develop some relationships, you’ve developed some credibility. People have heard of you, they know your name. It’s much easier to keep the ministry going, you know, you can do it with relatively little effort, but you just keep doing. And so in the beginning stages, man, you gotta send out a newsletter, you gotta send out a email, you gotta give people calls, you gotta send out text messages, you gotta take pictures, you gotta share, and you gotta send out a thank you card. I mean, someone sent you $3, you gotta send them a, a thank you postcard.

(29:17):
Say, wow, thank you so much for sending me that $3. And, and you just gotta, and, and it’s hard work, it’s hard labor. But I want to encourage you, if you’ll keep going, the day will come where your ministry will be spinning rapidly, like that merry-go-round, and you’ll be going faster and faster and faster, and then it looks much easier. And so when you look at Christ for All Nations, you have to realize that everything that’s going on here, I mean, everything is spinning here, and everything is just going, everybody things are are, are going all the time. But it didn’t begin that way. You know, Reinhardt, bonky had many years of faithfulness in the ministry, building the ministry, putting the work in, putting the effort in, doing crusades, suffering huge setbacks. Like he, he built the biggest tent in the world, and the second time they put it up, the, the wind came and, and tore the top off the tent and, and destroyed it.

(30:21):
I mean, that could destroy a ministry, you know? But he kept pushing and kept pushing. And Peter Vandenberg, he kept pushing, kept pushing. And, and so what you see happening here is the result of 40 years of faithfulness to the vision of God to go after souls. So you can’t be disappointed if at first things aren’t spinning very rapidly. You gotta keep going. I don’t wanna say keep going, keep going, and don’t stop, don’t stop. All right? Another word that I like is the word education. Learn about fundraising. Read books about how to raise money. I’d encourage you to, one of the best things you can do to educate yourself about fundraising is pick five ministries that you admire and start to support those five ministries, even if you can only afford to do a little bit. Become a $25 a month supporter of five different ministries, and look at what they do to keep in touch with you and then imitate what they’re doing.

(31:33):
Are they sending you newsletters? Does someone call you, you know, what are, how are you, how are they keeping up the relationship with you? And so that could be the best seed that you could sow is looking at how different ministries are being successful at fundraising and do what they do. If they have a mailing list, you start a mailing list. If they do an email, you, you, you do emails. So one time, you know, I was praying, I was asking God, I said, God you know, I need more monthly supporters. Can you please gimme more monthly supporters? And God spoke to me. He says, Daniel, he says, who are you supporting monthly? And at that time, I hadn’t been supporting anybody every single month, you know, I’d given to different ministries, but I wasn’t. So I said, man, if I want monthly supporters, I better be supporting somebody monthly.

(32:30):
I better be sowing in the area that I want to receive. And, and so one of the first ministries that my wife and I started supporting was c a n. We wanted to become a monthly supporter with c a n. So we’ve continued that over the years. And so, you know, I get all of their beautiful pictures, and that Daniel Kalinda, he signs his letters personally, I think to me. And, you know, it’s, it’s really says Daniel Kalinda and Reinhardt Bonky together, you know, and they sent, well, I, I’ve learned so much by reading the newsletters that they sent out, and then the next month, you know, whatever they said, then I can just say, you know, look at, look at how God is moving and, and imitate. Sometimes imitation is the greatest form of flattering. All right? The next key is the word wisdom.

(33:24):
And so, use financial wisdom. Be faithful with the money that God puts into your hand. Keep track of every dollar in every donor. Put aside a percentage of your money for a rainy day when you’re doing a crusade. Don’t just spend the money on the, the first bid that you receive. You gotta negotiate everything. Raise your money in phases. Be truthful in your fundraising. If you say, tell people you’re gonna do something, you need to do it. Keep your word and, and show proof of what you’ve been doing, and know the purpose of money in ministry. Money is a means. It’s not an in money is simply a tool that we use. If I was going to build a platform, I would use a hammer. And I don’t get enamored with a hammer. I just, you use the hammer for when you need to build the platform, and then later you lay it down.

(34:16):
And, and so for me, money is a tool, a tool that I use to build the platform of for ministry that I can use it to, to reach people. And so people who start focusing only on money and only on fundraising very quickly, their ministries can become unbalanced. And, and there can be problems in their, their ministries, because they’re so focused on money. And so we use money, but you have to keep your focus, the ministry that God has called you to. And so you have to remember what the purpose of that money is. The next word is the word variety. So, you know, they say that variety is the spice of life. And so in fundraising, it’s good to just try a bunch of different things. And in our ministry, we have tried every single idea that we can, can come up with for, for raising money.

(35:14):
And I would say that some of those ideas have worked well, some of them have, have, have worked poorly. Like some of the I ideas you know, have worked slowly. But there’s no one idea that’s the, the secret to fundraising. You just gotta try a lot of different things. And so one of the things that is probably most important is sending out regular newsletters. And so what I’d recommend that you do is make a list of the top a hundred people that you think might support you. Maybe it’s family members, maybe it’s friends, maybe it’s people from the church that you came from. You know, make a list of the top a hundred people that you think would support you and give them a call, get their addresses, and start to send them a regular monthly newsletter. And I don’t think you should wait until you graduate from bootcamp.

(36:13):
I think you should start now. In fact, I think you should go and, and send them something this week and, and say, Hey, I’m in evangelism Bootcamp right now. In just three weeks, we’re going to Tanzania. And I want to ask you to be praying for me as I go to Tanzania because we’re going to be ministering to thousands of people while we’re there. And we also need money in order to make it happen. Would you be willing to send a, a gift to help me with the cost of going on this mission trip to Tanzania? And, and so start now with a, a newsletter. Send out the newsletter and maybe the first newsletter that you send out, not very many people respond, but when you go to Tanzania, what you do is you, you take pictures for one another and share your pictures with one another, and then take those pictures and hand and, and, and then when you get back, send out another newsletter and include the pictures and say, look, this is what God did.

(37:08):
This is the miracles that God did. And, and, and now that we’ve completed the Tanzania, now God is calling us to do a crusade in Thailand. And you say, and, and, and share the vision of that. And even if you think it’s gonna be like six months until you go to Thailand, you know, begin to share the vision and, and, and, and, and tell people what it is that you’re, you, you’re going to do. And I think that you should send out a newsletter at least every month. If you want people to give to you monthly, you should communicate with them monthly. I think one of the mistakes that a lot of missionaries make is they’ll, they’ll do like one or two letters a year, and then they’ll wonder why people aren’t sending the money. But it’s because they’re not communicating enough. And so if you want people to give to you a monthly, you send them something monthly.

(38:03):
And when you send a newsletter, put a return envelope in there, make it easy for people to send money back to. You even buy stamps and put a stamp on the corner of the envelope and, and pre-addressed it and say, if you want to help me with a trip to Tanzania, I’m including an envelope in this letter for you to quickly send that back to me because I’m leaving in just three weeks. I need to hear from you right away. And if you’ll do that, people will respond. All right? So another thing you can do is, is write thank you letters. After someone sends you something, even if it’s just a little bit, write them a letter and say, thank you. Thank you so much for your generous gift. Thank you for helping me go to Tanzania and, and thank you for helping us lead people to Jesus.

(38:47):
And, and tie your thank you back in results and into the vision and, and tell a story. So when I was in Sierra Leone in February we had lots of Muslims in our services. It’s 70% Muslim, but it’s not really militant Muslims. So, so the Muslims just came to the services. And even in our pastor’s conference, we had two Imams who came to the pastor’s conference. We didn’t find out about it until the third day. And, and so we never gave an altar call in the pastor’s conference because we just assumed all the pastors were saved. And then we found out that these two Muslim imams were there in the pastor’s conference and we’re like, oh, man, that’s why you should give a altar call every single time you go anywhere, no matter what. Give an altar call. Well, anyways, there was this Muslim cameraman who we had hired from a television station in Freetown, and he went with us, and, and he went to all the services, and he’s a Muslim.

(39:44):
He was from the Mandingo tribe. The Mandingo tribe is 99% Muslim to be Mandingo is to be Muslim. And so he was in all the services, he was taking pictures, and, and he, he took thousands of pictures. Probably none of them were any good, but he was taking pictures of, of everything that was going on. And we were doing like five to seven services every single day, going from village to village, preaching in the villages. And, and so he heard the gospel all week long, like seven times a day. He kept hearing the gospel. And on the last day, we did a baptism service for the villagers who had gotten saved. And, and the night before this Muslim caravan came to us and he says, I want to be baptized. And we said, wait, wait a second. Do, do you know what it means to be baptized?

(40:30):
And he says, yes, it means I want to become a Christian. Wow. And so we said, we would be honored to baptize you. And so we baptized him, and he has a family with eight people. And so the next day we sent a pastor to his house, and, and the pastor led his entire family. All eight of them came to Jesus. And, and so that was a great testimony. And then I was in one service, and there was this boy who was deaf in one year. He’d been deaf for three years. And I told everyone, I said, take your hand and place it on the part of your body where there’s pain. And so the boy’s mother, he, she put her hand on the boy’s ear and began to pray for him. And as we were praying, a black rock or a, like a, a substance came out of his ear and fell into her hand.

(41:17):
And she said it was really gross. So she shook it off her hand onto the ground, and then she tested her son’s hearing, and he was able to hear. And so he came up and testified, and everyone was super excited about what God had done there. And so that little boy is the story that I told in this month’s newsletter. And then the Muslim cameraman who was saved is the story I’m gonna tell in next month’s newsletter. And because I’m gonna show people the power of what happened when someone heard about Jesus and what they were giving towards. Amen. then send out emails. I try to do at least two emails a month. You could do more than that. By the way I’d love for all of you to, to sign up for my email list. And so if you’ll pull out your phone right now, <laugh> and, and text the word souls, s o u l s to the number 22 8 28, and then just put in your email.

(42:20):
And that way I can tell you about what God is doing in different parts of the world. So just pull out your phone and type in the word souls, s o u l s to the number 2 28 28. And if you’re a foreigner, and sometimes our phones aren’t working here in the United States, just come up afterwards and give me your, your email address and, and I will add you to the email list. And, and so if you’ll do that, I will send you three of my eBooks for free as a gift to you for everyone who signs up for my email list. And so I try to collect email addresses, and every time I send out email, there’s people who unsubscribe for my email. Please don’t unsubscribe for my email. It hurts my heart. Like I look at it, it’s like, look at these people who hate me.

(43:05):
And, but then there’s always people that are signing up for my email. And so, praise the Lord. So there, there’s actually more people that have unsubscribed now than that ha are subscribed right now. So more people don’t like me than like me, but that’s okay. I don’t have to have everyone like me. I just have to be connected with the right people that God has connected me too. All right? You can host a banquet if you, if you do a banquet or, or a prayer breakfast, something, anything that you can get in front of people to, to invite people. So sometimes people say, you know, I try to get into churches and churches won’t have me. Well, if you have a banquet, you can invite people to the banquet. You don’t have to have a church invite. You, you can invite people to the banquet.

(43:48):
And so if you don’t have a platform, create a platform, look for a way to get in front of people, you know, even just invite, if you know somebody just say, Hey could we have a dessert night at your house? Could you invite three or four of your friends? And I could come over, we could give them all a dessert. And, and then I can share within the vision of what God is calling me to do. And, and if maybe it’s your aunt or something, she, she has three or four friends and she can invite them over, and you can just tell them the vision. Another way to raise money is, is meet with businessmen. Businessmen have more money than churches. If you just go to churches to raise money, sometimes it’s hard because churches have big vision and no resources, but businessmen, they’ve got lots of resources.

(44:32):
So sometimes it’s better to spend your time meeting with businessmen and, and, and calling them and, and, and asking them, can, can I come and share with you the the vision of what God has called me to do? And some will reject you, but some will give you checks. Praise the Lord. So speak everywhere that you’re invited to speak. It doesn’t matter where I’m invited, if it’s a, a small group. A couple weeks ago, I went and spoke, spoke at someone’s fellowship group. They had four people in the group. And so I went and spoke. It was like three hours and, and it was lots of ministry took place. They were a very needy group. But I go anywhere that people, I think they gave me an offering of like $7. It was awesome. And, and so but I’ll go anywhere to preach anytime I can preach, because I know that when you minister, good things are going to happen.

(45:30):
And sometimes I’ve gone to big churches and they’ve only given me a small offering, but then I’ll go to a little church with 12 people and they’ll gimme thousands of dollars. It’s amazing. And, and so again, you can’t look to people. You just gotta keep sharing the vision. All right. And then the last word I’d like to talk to you is about the word sowing. Several years ago, I had the chance to visit Ora Roberts at his condo out in California. And on the way over to, to meet him, I felt, you know, oral Roberts, he, he was the one who has taught the bo body of Christ about seed faith. You know, take your need and wrap your faith around your seed and sow it and expect God to meet your need. And I said I should sow something into, to Oral Roberts.

(46:20):
And so my brother and I, at that time, we, we, we did children’s ministry, and so we had like a thousand dollars in our bank account. And so we, we’d done this, we raised this money doing clown shows at churches. And so I turned to my brother and I said, you should, you think we should, so an offering into oral? And he said, yes. And I said, let’s, so the thousand dollars, everything that we got. And so we, we sowed that money into, to Oral Roberts. And before that, we had been receiving offerings of like $5 and 23 cents, you know, $18. We’d go travel for two days to go ministry to church, and they’d, they’d give us some coupons for Burger King on the way out the door. And but when we sowed that seed into Oral Roberts, what it did is it broke the back of poverty in our life.

(47:16):
And we started receiving, doing the same type of ministry. We started receiving thousand dollars checks and $5,000 checks. We go to a clown show and someone would give us a 5,000 check. I mean, that’s a really good offering for a clown, you know, <laugh>. And, and so, but it’s because of sowing seed, amen, into the life of Oral Roberts that God began to, to give us a tremendous harvest. And so I’d encourage you to be givers. There is a eternal principle of sowing and reaping that when you sow, God will give you a tremendous harvest. Yes. One more thing I wanted to talk to you about is this paper. This is my donor funnel. And so there’s four stages that I have for developing donors. So the first stage is to find people. And so the main idea in this first stage is to capture people’s information.

(48:17):
And the goal is to go from a stranger to an acquaintance. And so the way that I start to build relationships with people in the very beginning of the relationship, I start to sow into them. And so I give them a copy of my book or I’ll give them something you know, and, and so I try to at least get people to sign up for the, the email list. And then after I find people, then I try to win them as a donor. And so that would be the first donation or purchase from our ministry. And so I try to move people from being an acquaintance to being a friend. And so I have a variety of ways that I cultivate that. I send out text messages, I’ll send letters to people. If someone signs up for my, my newsletter, I will send them three letters.

(49:10):
And these are the three best letters that I can write. The first letter is a letter about our vision. The second letter is a letter about a, a specific project that we’re doing. And then the third letter is offering them a product. And it costs me a dollar for every newsletter that I send out every month. And we have like 5,000 something names on our mailing list, but I don’t mail out 5,000 letters. I’ll mail these first three letters, and if someone doesn’t respond to those first three letters, then I stop mailing to them because if they don’t respond to the best, I can write, you know, I could maybe keep writing to them a long time, but the chances of them responding later get smaller and smaller. And so, on a monthly basis, we actually probably send out about 200 to 300 actual newsletters a month.

(50:05):
And, and what I do is I send to everyone who’s given to me in the ba past 12 months, and then every once in a while, the bigger list, I’ll send out a postcard to people and, and try to reactivate them and, and, and maybe offer them a new book that I’ve written or something and say, Hey, remember me, but my monthly cost is sending out my newsletter to, to 300 people is like $300. If I tried to mail out to everybody on my mail list, it’d be $5,000. And I get as much from the 300 as I would sending out the 5,000. So I send out the first three letters. If they don’t respond to that, then I, I keep them on the mail list, but, but I don’t mail to them on a monthly basis. So the goal then is to move from the first donation to, to keep them as a monthly donor.

(50:52):
And so if someone expresses interest, they buy something, then I’ll try to, to develop them into a monthly donor by sending them a video, by talking to them at a meeting by, by inviting them to a banquet, you know, sharing the vision. I’ll, I’ll call them, I’ll set up a meeting with them. If they’re in Tulsa, I’ll, I’ll, I’ll call and, and ask if we can meet for coffee. And at that meeting I’ll ask them, would you consider becoming a monthly partner with King Ministries? And so then with people who are monthly donors, then the last stage is lifting them. And so someone who has given to you consistently for $50 a month for several years, then it might be appropriate to go to them and ask them money for a special project and say, you know, would you consider giving a $10,000 gift towards this special project?

(51:39):
And someone who has started to support you and loved you? Then you can lift them up in their, their giving level, and then ultimately even looking for legacy gifts that people that could leave their estate to you or, or something. So here’s the process. Just this sheet of paper here is probably worth a thousand dollars consulting fee. And so just, just going through this. And so you’re building a funnel, you’re trying to pour as many people into the top of your funnel as you possibly can, and then they bring them down through the funnel. And I try to make a no-brainer offer that anybody can accept. And so what I tell people, I tell people over the years, it’s taken us an average of about $1 for every person that we’ve been able to reach for Jesus. And so when people give me a dollar, I’m able to reach at least one person for Jesus with a message of, of, of the gospel.

(52:37):
And so the Bible says that all of heaven rejoices when just one sinner gets saved. And so today, could you become at least a, a monthly partner for a dollar a month, for just a dollar a month? You can be responsible for starting a party in heaven every single month. And and so that’s, and, and so anyone can do a dollar a month, but I’m going for monthly partners. So the church I ministered at on Sunday is not a very big church. Maybe a hundred people in the congregation and 13 people signed up to become monthly partners, and none of them were dollars. Everyone was at least $10. There’s one guy who did $5. There were several $10, but several did 25 and several did 50. But my, my goal is if you can just do a dollar a month, if you could just become a partner for a dollar a month. And so if you want to partner with me and help me lead people to Jesus a dollar a month, you can help me lead people to Jesus. Would you be my partner today? And I developed a video that is right on the opening of my website. And could we, could we show that video really quick?

(53:46):
Hi, I’m Daniel King and I’m a missionary evangelist, and I’m excited about leading people to Jesus. I’m the founder of King Ministries International, and our focus is evangelism. Many churches and missionaries focus on feeding the sheep. Our goal is to find lost sheep and bring them back to the church so they can start the discipleship process. We are excited about bringing people to Jesus. When I was 10 years old, my parents became missionaries in the country of Mexico, and I became passionate about going and telling people about Jesus. When I was 15 years old. I set a goal to lead a million people to Jesus before I turned 30 years of age. And by the grace of God, we were able to accomplish that goal. Now, our goal is to lead a million people to Jesus every single year. That’s why we do large evangelistic festivals.

(54:48):
We do leadership training to help local pastors become better at leading people. We also do literature distribution to help follow up on new believers and disciple them, and we do humanitarian relief to help those who are hurting. And it’s all for one purpose to lead a million people to Jesus every single year. I met my wife Jessica, right on the border of Rwanda in Congo, in the middle of Africa. And now together we have visited 70 plus nations around the world, and we have led over 2 million people in a salvation prayer. Over our 20 years of ministry, it’s cost an average of about $1 for every person that we’ve been able to reach. For Jesus. That’s amazing. For only $1, we’re able to change someone’s eternal destiny. And so today I want to ask you to give your first dollar to help us lead someone to Jesus. You can give by going to our website, www.kingministries.com, and clicking on the donate button. Or call us toll free, +1 877-431-4276. Imagine when you get to heaven and someone that you help lead to Jesus comes over and gives you a hug. You know the Bible says that all of heaven rejoices when one sinner gets saved. And so $1 can start a party in. I want to ask you to give today, give a dollar to help us lead someone to Jesus. I’m Daniel King. I’m a missionary evangelist, and our goal is every soul.

Have you ever wondered how culture impacts the way people receive the gospel? If you’ve ever evangelized in a foreign country, you’ve most likely encountered some kind of cultural barrier as you share the gospel cross-culturally. In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about how evangelists can become culturally sensitive in order to share the gospel more effectively in these cross-cultural settings.

Evangelism Podcast Announcer (00:34):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now, here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:58):
I was ministering in, in Pakistan, and I didn’t have a pulpit, so I, I, I read a verse from the Bible, and, and then I, after I finished reading the verse from the Bible, I just set the Bible down on the, the platform behind me. And it actually was extremely offensive to a lot of people, because to them, it’s a holy book. And if you take the Holy Book and you put it on the ground somewhere where you could step on it, ac even accidentally, you step on it, that would be a great insult. And so they came to me and they said, brother, we must get you a pulpit so you can put the Bible in the proper place. And so you have to be really sensitive. I, I remember another time I was ministering down in Costa Rica, and this was when I was a teenager.

(01:53):
We went down there on a, a, a missions trip. And I was doing a drama. And in the drama, I wanted all the kids to yell. So I got all the kids yelling, and he’s like, yeah, yell louder, yell louder. And then after I got everyone yelling, I gave them the, the okay sign. Like, okay, good job. And, and everyone fell into horrified silence. And, and I, I couldn’t figure out, like, you know, in America, if you’d go, okay, I mean, that’s a good thing. But down there they said, oh, don’t use that sign. It means you’re, you’re homosexual. And, and, and so I was like, oh, I, okay. I won’t use that sign anymore. You know? So you have to be careful sometimes ministering cross-culturally. And another time I was in the nation of, of, of Pakistan.

(02:41):
And right before I went up on the platform, I was at this, this big conference of pastors called the, the Alco Convention. It was started back in 1905 by John Hyde, praying Hyde. And it’s been going every single year, ever since 1905. And they invited me to speak to all, all these pastors. And right before I went on the platform the a committee, four or five of the, the, the pastors came to me. And very seriously, they said, brother when you’re preaching there’s something very important that we must ask you to do. I said, well, what, you know, what do you want me to do? They said, please do not say that Jesus is a dog.

(03:31):
And I said, you know, I was not planning on saying that I can agree with you. I will not say that Jesus was a doc. So I get up, I preach a good sermon, and afterwards I went down. I asked one of the pastors, I said, why were they so serious when they told me that? Why did they ask me that? I said, oh, brother. They said, last year we invited a special guest speaker from the United States. And he tried to tell a joke. Now, now, this is the joke that he told. It was, it is not even a very funny joke, but he was trying to open up, and it was about this, this this parrot and that lived in a house and a robber broke into the house, and the parrot started to speak to the robber and said, Jesus is watching you.

(04:27):
Jesus is watching you. Jesus is watching you. And the robber said, oh, what is that parrot know? And he just kept robbing the house. Well, out of the back corner comes this doberman pincher comes up and grabs him. And, and when the police come and, and arrest him and get him out of the jaws of the dog, they petted the dog and said, good boy. And, and they said, the dog’s name is Jesus. And, and when he would say, Jesus is watching you, the dog’s name was Jesus. Well, he just, he told that story. And in Pakistan, it, calling someone a dog is extremely offensive. And so it’s just a casual story. It’s not even very funny, but it’s a typical story that an American pastor might say, in order to break the ice. Well, they took that pastor off the platform after he said that, and they said, you’re not allowed to speak here anymore.

(05:25):
We’re gonna tell all the churches in Pakistan that you’re not allowed to speak. You have insulted Jesus. You have insulted his name, and, and they wouldn’t let him speak. So he, he went all the way to Pakistan, and because he didn’t know the seriousness of different cross-cultural communication. So, so we have to be sensitive when it comes to culture, and we have to work hard not to insult people when we’re ministering cross-culturally. And sometimes it’s, it’s just innocent mistakes. Like, I had one friend who came with me on, on a mission strip, and, and this is what he would do. He would go and he would shake the people’s hands. So he’d shake their hand, and then as soon as he got done, shaking them hand, he’d reach in his pocket and pull out a thing of, of hand sanitizer.

(06:11):
And he’d do this, and then he’d shake the next person’s hand, and then he would do another squirt. And he did this. And then he’d pray for someone, put his hand on someone and pray for them, and then out would come the thing. And you know, he was just trying to get rid of all the germs. But, you know, it came across as just a little bit offensive. The way that he was, was, was doing it. One time, my, my wife was, she was a, a crusade director helping an evangelist to set up crusades before we, we met and, and got married. And so one time she was trying to decorate the platform a little bit, and she had an idea, we’re gonna put the flag of the country on the front of the platform. And she accidentally, she didn’t know she did it, but she accidentally put the flag upside down on the, the front of the, the, the podium.

(07:04):
And she got in big trouble for it. All the pastors came to her and says you have disrespected our flag <laugh>. And then I remember one time I, I was down in the, the, the nation of, of Haiti, and, and we were doing a crusade, and, and we always ask our crusade directors for receipts because we are accountable to the government and to our partners for, for all the money that we spend. And so I would ask the crusade director for the receipts, and he ended up being very offended that I was always asking for receipts. You know, he, I, he’d go to the store and, and get some tape, and we came back and say, could you gimme a receipt? Well, it was just me trying to be accountable. But he felt like it was very offensive because he felt like I, I didn’t trust him with money.

(07:58):
And so every time I was asking him for a receipt, he felt like I was saying, I don’t trust you. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. And it was hurting the relationship. And so I had to sit down with him and ex explain to him something from our culture that at least in American culture, because of the rules that we have in the United States, we have to count for our money. And, and so I was trying to impose my culture, and in his culture, he felt like it was offensive. And so I had to explain, he’s like, no, brother, I trust you. I believe in you. You are a man of God. And I know that you would not cheat me. You would not lie. You would not try to steal money from me. I know that brother, because you are a man of God. But for my sake, with my government, I have to ask for receipts so that I can show that I also am a man of integrity to those.

(08:58):
And so, after I explained it to him and explained my culture and the reason why our culture requires different recording mechanisms for, for our money and stuff then there was no problem. Then he understood I wasn’t doing it because I didn’t trust him. I was doing it because I wanted to, to show that I was walking in integrity. And so, people from other cultures are completely different. We think that deep down, everyone is just like us, but that’s not really the case. Culture is all pervasive culture. It mayeth the man. And so every different culture has a different philosophical outlook, different moral standards, different social rules and behaviors, how you are supposed to interact with one another, and different cultures have different taboos. And so we are called to change people spiritually, but we’re not called to change people culturally. In fact, I think every culture has a piece of divinity in it.

(10:13):
Amen. Because in the beginning of time, God created man, God created all the different cultures, and you know, every different culture has a nugget of God’s character and God’s best in it. And, and different cultures have different standards, different things that they feel are are important. So like here in America, we have a different sense of time than people in other cultures do sometimes. Here in America, we usually will give people grace if they’re five minutes late. You know, we, we’d say, you should be five to 10 minutes early, but if someone’s five minutes late to meet you for coffee, we’re, we’re not offended. You know? That’s okay. There’s probably traffic, you know? And so in, in our culture, five minutes is not that big a deal. I grew up a lot in, in Mexico and in Central and South America, and I found that in those countries it’s fairly typical for people to be 30 minutes to an hour late.

(11:20):
And it’s just normal. You know, you say we’re starting the service at six o’clock, and they know that the, the music will start at six 30 and everyone will get there at seven. That’s just, that’s just how it works. In, in Hispanic countries, they just, and, and so they just have a, and it is not wrong, but I went to Germany one time and they said that the train left at 6 0 3 <laugh>, and if you are not on the train at 6 0 3, you’re gonna miss the train in Germany. It is to the second. I mean, it is, when it turns 6 0 3, that train is pulling out of the station. And so then, but then I went to an African country, and in this one particular country, it was like five hours after the service was supposed to start that people showed up. And I said, you know, we were supposed to start a long time ago.

(12:21):
Like, oh, brother, there was a lot of traffic. I was like, I know, but it’s like five hours, you know? But then we would have church, you know, for five hours for another five or six hours. Where here in America, nowadays churches are like an hour and 12 minutes, and then everyone gets dismissed, you know? And, and so different cultures have a different way of looking at things. And, and there’s nothing wrong or right about any particular culture. We, we find that we like our culture more than we like you know, sometimes, but, you know, we’re not trying to change people culturally. We are trying to bring Jesus to people. Hmm. Right? And, and so like the first missionaries that went to Hawaii, they, they were from New England where it was cold in the wintertime, and they would wear wool jackets and hats and stuff.

(13:23):
And they got to Hawaii and they continued to wear wool jackets and hats cuz that’s what everyone wore back where they were from. And all of the Hawaiians just looked at them and said, you guys are silly. You know, it is hot out here. We’re down at the beach. Why are you wearing a wool jacket? So sometimes we, we bring our cultural misconceptions with us when we go to the mission field. And so western culture is not Christianity. Jesus came from the Middle East, and sometimes our culture can actually be a hindrance. But what Jesus does is he cuts through all racial, political, and cultural differences. And so your job as a missionary is not to turn people into you. Your, your job is to make people look like Jesus. Amen. Right? Hmm. Yes. And we have to be sensitive to different cultures. When your, your, your min ministering to people, so, you know, the sermon illustrations that you typically use in the United States would be different than the sermon illustrations that you’re going to use in Africa.

(14:36):
Like here in the United States, I’ve heard pastors give illustrations about popular movies or popular shows that they’ve seen on Netflix. You know, well, in Africa, sometimes a lot of the people don’t even have a tv. They’ve never gone to the cinema to to watch a movie. You some countries, they’ve never eaten a pizza. Can you imagine that? You never, you never had a pizza in your whole life. And so if you’re giving an illustration about eating a pizza, that’s something that someone here would understand that illustration, but would be very different overseas. One time I was in India and I was ministering with a friend and he, he was, he was ministering and he gave an illustration. He, and th this was the illustration. He says, you know, one day I was, I was driving my car and I ran out of gas and I didn’t have any money for gas.

(15:34):
And he says, and I was praying to say, God, you know, what am I gonna do? And he says, then I looked in my wallet and in the back of my wallet, I forgot it was there, I had a, I tucked a a hundred dollars bill. And so I pulled out that, that a hundred dollars bill and I was able to buy gas. And so his point was that God provides for you even when you, you, you don’t know if you’re gonna need it. And so that’s a, that’s a great illustration. It was illustrating the point, but the problem was that not a single pastor at that pastor’s conference had a car. And, and so you’re talking about a car, and to them they’re saying, wow, look at your amazing wealth.

Speaker 5 (16:14):
Right?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:15):
And then none of them had ever held a hundred dollars bill in their hands. In fact, the typical salary over there would be about a dollar a day. So, you know, you’re talking about a huge amount of money that he just accidentally misplaced in the back of his wallet, <laugh>. And so they didn’t understand the illustration the way that he intended for it to be understood. Hmm. And so, people in Africa, they’ve never heard of baseball or American football. You know, if you go to, in India or Pakistan, the thing that you wanna talk about is cricket

(17:05):
instead of American football, they, you know, they, they kick the ball When they play football, they don’t throw the ball. Here in America, we throw the ball when you play football, which is strange cuz the rest of the world calls it football. And so some cultures

(17:27):
like in, in Ukraine, if you say something twice, like here in America, preachers will say something twice you know, God is a good God. And everyone says, hallelujah. And they say, God is a good God. Hallelujah. God is a good God. Well, in Ukraine, if you say something twice, they look at you, Hey, do you think I’m stupid? I heard you the first time. Why are you saying it twice? Hmm. So we come to serve people. We come not as ambassadors of our culture. We come as ambassadors of Jesus. Good. And we go to people, we say, Jesus told me to come to preach the gospel to you. And I hope someday that God will open up the door for you to come to my country and to preach the gospel to us. We don’t go as the savior. He’s the Savior. We bring the Savior with us.

(18:34):
We’re not trying to come to, to rescue their culture or to, to fix people. We go to point people to Jesus. Another difference between the United States and sometimes Africa is that, that here in the United States, we have very individualistic thinking. And so an individual will make a decision for him himself. And so, e even when we get saved, it’s a personal decision. Would you make a personal decision today to choose to follow Jesus? Whereas in some countries in Africa, there’s much more of a, a corporate mentality where they make a decision to, it’s not just the one person getting saved, it would be the whole family or the whole village deciding to follow Jesus. And, and it would actually be very offensive sometimes if you go and you try to get a, a wife saved a and the husband is opposed to that, and it would be considered disrespectful that you would be talking to her instead of talking to the, the head of the household.

(19:49):
Because first you show respect and you explain the gospel message to the, to the head of the household. And then after he decides, yes, we’re our family is going to serve Jesus, then he turns to his wife and says, we’re, we’re the whole family, us the kids, aunts, uncles, the entire family is going to, to come to Jesus. Man, I was just recently in the, the nation of, of Mongolia. And we did a, we did a crusade in the ancient capital of Ganges Khan from, at one time Ganges Khan had conquered all of Asia from this place. And he had one fourth of the world’s population under his control. And now the population there has dwindled. And they only have about 14,000 people in that village, about 4,000 homes. And, and so we took a team, and it’s mostly Buddhists there. We had a hundred Christians with us that came from 12 different countries, less than a hundred Christians in the city.

(20:56):
And so we took our team, joined together with the, the local Christians, and, and went door to door throughout the entire community handing out bibles and giving people a, a gospel of mark. And so they live in these little huts that are covered with fur that are good at keeping in the heat during the winter months. And we’re going door to door knocking on the doors and that they would invite us to come into their, their little hut, and we would tell them why we were there. And, and many of them were, were very hospitable and, and would give us tea. And the traditional drink of Mongolia is fermented horse milk. And so they’d bring this big bowl of warm fermented horse melt. And the pastor gave me and said, this is the traditional drink of my country. And, and, and so I, I tasted it and it tasted like really sour yogurt, like, like unsweetened yogurt, really sour, unsweetened yogurt.

(22:04):
And so I, I tasted it. And you know, their, their idea of a good time on a cold winter night is to sit around the fireplace and everyone tells stories to one another and passes around the big bowl of fermented horse milk. And so I drank the traditional drink of his people, and then I said, brother, I want you to drink the traditional drink of my people. And I brought out a bottle of Coca-Cola and gave him a bottle of Coca-Cola. And, and so we went and, and we visited the household. And so, so in, in cases like that, where you have an opportunity to, to go into someone’s house and you’re, you’re offering to pray for them and to talk to them about Jesus and to, to give them a Bible, you know, if they give you something to drink, it’s appropriate to go ahead and, and take a drink.

(22:52):
If they give you something to eat, it’s appropriate to go ahead and eat. Sometimes you don’t know what it is, but praise God, you say, God bless this food, and I pray that all sickness will stay far away from my body in Jesus’ name. And, and you eat it because that’s what is, is culturally appropriate to do. And you wouldn’t do anything to, to offend them. And usually people are, are very forgiving. Even if you learn just a few words in their language, and even if you mispronounce them, they will love you for trying. One of the things I do sometimes when I’m preaching is I’ll try to learn a few words in their language. And, and so I’ll, I’ll say God is good. And the the translator will say, and I’ll say, good. And the translator will say, went on. So I’ll repeat it in the local language.

(23:47):
And usually I completely mess up and everyone, everyone laughs and I say, the devil is bad. And then they’ll say bad in the local language. And I’ll try to, and I’ll try to say good and bad and good and bad. And, and I’ll, I’ll completely mangle their language and everyone will laugh at me. But it’s a great way to connect with them because I’m, I’m showing that I’m at least trying to learn something of their local language. I’m at least trying to, to relate to them. And even if I mess it up, they can laugh at me. It’s okay, it’s fine, as long as they wanna laugh at me. Just make sure when you’re preaching, never do anything that would show that you’re laughing at them. Right, right. Because if you start laughing at them, well, it’ll just close every door Yeah. To open up for, for you to share the gospel.

(24:47):
But if they can laugh at you, I, you know, I make fun of myself. One time I was in Africa and I, I went with a, an African-American pastor who is really big and very tall, and he’s very regal in the way that he walks. And, and so the, the church is over in Africa, just loved him because he would, he would walk in and so they gave him an African name, and the African name that they gave him, he says, what does that mean? They said, it means the king has returned. And so he walked in with this name, the king has returned, and I had this big backpack that I carried on my back. And it had my camera and all my, my, my bible, my laptop, everything in it. And so I was always carrying this big backpack. And so they gave me an African name and I said, what does my African name mean? And they said, your name means small man with big backpack.

(25:55):
One time, my, my wife Jessica, she, she lived for a year in Kenya, and all the different members of her team had babies named after them. And so one of her team members is, is named Scott. And so one day they brought a little baby boy and they said, we are naming this boy Scott. And they couldn’t even pronounce Scott, but there’s Scott, Scott. And so my wife was, she’s like, well, when are they gonna name a baby after me? They named babies after like two or three of the team members. And so one day finally they came to her and they were so excited and, and saying, and, and said, we named it Jessica. Jessica. And she’s like, oh, finally a baby has been named after me. And, and, and the pastor grabbed her by the hand and says, come and see, come and see Jessica. And, and she didn’t really totally understand, but grabbed her by the hand and she went out and out in front of his house, there was his brand new cow that he’s been saving up for. And he said, we’ve named a cow, Jessica. And so all her team members got named after babies, and she got a cow named Jessica, named after her.

(27:11):
Alright. So when we’re ministering to people overseas, the best thing that we can do is to show honor and respect to them, to, to show that we value them as people. We are all created in the image of God. And God does not create trash. You are valuable. You are made in God’s image. And I’ve found that if you will show that you value and respect people and try to learn their customs, try to be polite to them that you will open up doors. Even if you make a little mistake, do a a wrong hand gesture or say something wrong that would be offensive in their culture. As long as you’re showing respect and honor to them, it will smooth over many problems. One time I took a friend of mine with me down to Brazil, and he’s a children’s minister. His name is Mark.

(28:16):
And Mark’s a great guy, and he loves children. And so he just, he ministers like his foot is plugged into an electric socket and he’s just, he, you know, he, he’s excited, but he’s the type of guy who, who has very few filters. And so like, he’s always like, and so I took him with me to Brazil, and during the crusade he’s like, can I take all the kids to the back? And you, you’re ministering the adults in front all this, I, I’ll minister to them. And so he, he took all the kids and he had this big parachute type thing that he spread out on the ground as a tarp. And he had all the kids sit down and he was doing games with them and, and teaching them, telling them Bible stories. And, and I was like halfway through my message, and some someone came running up to me and, and they, they, there’s, they’re, they’re like, you know, talking about witchcraft and there’s witchcraft going on, like, what’s going on?

(29:09):
And, and, and so I, I handed the microphone to someone else, and I went back there and I found out that he was doing a teaching on, on Jesus, the lie of the world. And he brought some of those little candles with him, and he like, put them in a circle on the thing, and he’d lit all the candles. And they thought he was like putting curses on the kids because the witches down there, they actually do that type of thing. And so I’m like, mark, don’t do that. You know, blow out all the candles. And I’m like, don’t witchcraft, okay, you’re not allowed to do witchcraft at the crusade. You know? And he was just doing it as an illustration for the kids, and it was fun. But he didn’t have a, a cultural sensitivity to the, the, the, the, he didn’t know it wasn’t his fault.

(29:59):
But and then I took Mark with me again to Mongolia. And again, we, we were doing a, a children’s, he was, we had a children’s tent set up. We had a big tent for the adults and then a little tent for the kids. And, and so there were local children’s ministers that were, that dressed up as clowns. And they, they had a habit of, of ministering to the kids there, and they had a way of doing it. And the Mongolian people are very proud. They are warriors. They are the descendants of Genus Khan. And even the Christians, I would not wanna mess with them. I mean, they have a warrior spirit in them, and they are a very proud people. It’s very rare that they would invite someone in from the outside to come and minister there because they feel a, like, if they have to bring in, you know, a gift from the outside, that it’s because they’re lacking something in, in their, in, in themselves.

(31:00):
And, and so they’re very proud. So we were very honored to be invited and to, to, to be there. And, and so during the children’s service, you know, I, I told Mark, okay, I want you to sit down with their children’s minister, and you put together a plan, you know, you do some of your ministry, let them do some of their ministry and, and you know, put together a plan for how the whole service would go and share it. And there ended up being a fight between my children’s minister and their children’s ministers because my guy wanted to do it his way, and they had their way of doing it. And somehow they got offended and, and my guy got offended and we had to go. And it actually got to point where escalator, where we had to bring it to the, the leadership level where the pastors, and we had to sit down and I said, oh, I’m so sorry.

(32:00):
We didn’t know. We did not understand your culture. I’m so sorry that this has happened. As a leader, I, I take full responsibility for anything offensive that was said. That was not our intention. We just, we want to work together with you. And so we were able to, to smooth it over. But there was still a little bit of offense. And so kind of the way we smoothed it over is like their, their children’s ministers got one night and then my guy got one night, but we weren’t able to get them to, to work together because of, of the offense that had come, just because of a, a misunderstanding of that, that Asian culture, you know face very important in the Asian culture, you, you would not want to insult someone or to cause shame to come upon them. You know, so, you know, in front of people, I, I would always lift people up, always speak, encouraging words, you know I, I encourage people. All right. So those are some, some thoughts about culture. Let’s go ahead and open it up for questions and if you have any questions about culture or anything that I’ve said go ahead. We have a microphone here. You can come and, and ask your question right here at this microphone and I’ll do my best to answer any questions that you would have about culture.

(33:21):
Yeah, yeah. That’s how they told me we’re supposed to do it.

Evangelism Student #1 (33:27):
That’s right. I think

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:29):
In the c fan culture, that’s how

Evangelism Student #1 (33:31):
They

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:31):
Recording have instructed me to do it.

Evangelism Student #1 (33:34):
Yes. Regarding I just want to know, how do you prepare when you have to go in in a new country? How do you prepare just regarding the, the cultural aspect? Do you ask questions to the local leaders? Do you, do you have people from your team going there just to, to try to understand, do you watch movies? What, what are you,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (33:57):
What what country are you from?

Evangelism Student #1 (33:59):
Ivory. I’m native from Ivory Coast, but I live in Canada. I’ve been living in Canada over the last 20 years, so,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:03):
Okay. So are you can Canadian or Ivory Coast? I’m both. What is your culture?

Evangelism Student #1 (34:07):
I’m, IM bicultural actually. Okay. I’m I live half of my life in, in every coast. Mm-Hmm. And the overall half in Canada, so,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (34:15):
Okay. My, my wife is actually from Canada. Okay. Her family is Chinese. Okay. So both her mother and father are Chinese. Okay. And, and they were, her father was born over in Hong Kong. Mm-Hmm. Her mothers from a Chinese family. Okay. But they immigrated to Canada. And, and so she is Canadian, Canadian mostly by culture, but with some aspects of Chinese culture, just little that they got saved. And so when they got saved mm-hmm. <Affirmative>, a lot of the, the negative things in Chinese culture, they, they took out of their family, but she, they still, I mean, she still cooks me Chinese food, which is delicious. <Laugh>, you know, the

Evangelism Student #1 (34:57):
Food is always important.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (35:00):
So what, what what have you found is different between like, the culture in Ivory Coast and the

Evangelism Student #1 (35:05):
Culture? Oh, I found a lot actually.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (35:07):
Like, like what are some examples?

Evangelism Student #1 (35:08):
I remember like the, the Indi individualism is something like being in Canada was the first thing that struck me. I was so, so impacted that the people in Canada was, was most interested into the, the things coming from a coast. It’s like we, we care for others. We, we, we are very welcoming to people we don’t know. So basically it’s like, this is something I have to learn. For example, in in, in co devo in our coast, people are welcoming first, they’re very welcoming. Actually, like about 20% of the population comes from out of the country. So we are very used to having people coming from outside. So, and the first thing I, I have noticed like primarily in Covo in our coast, people are very welcoming, but it is very difficult to go deeper into things. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>. So you have to build trust. You start with like a basic level of, of trust, but then you have to go forward. In Canada, it’s like different people in, in, in Quebec in particular, because I don’t say Quebec is different from Canada. Sure. It has

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (36:29):
A diff Quebec is more French

Evangelism Student #1 (36:31):
In their culture. Exactly, exactly. And exactly. I live in Quebec. Yeah. So Quebec is different from other portion of Canada. In Quebec, you have first to build trust to, to to know people and then they trust you. There’s no basic level of trust that you have from the start. You have to find your place and build that, that trust. If you are in a context where you are friends, then it’s different. But before that you have to build your own, like your own, I don’t know how to say it. Your own relationship and Yeah. And go from there. Yeah. And this is one portion. And also I’ve noticed that, I’ve noticed in my own church also this what, what you are sharing, I have noticed this like fight over misunderstanding cultures. Yeah. And about time, for example, how, how do you bring people that have another understanding of time and the importance of time.

(37:38):
People are more focused on relationship than on rules. This is very like, it’s like a fight. You don’t, you don’t put this together. So in, in, in Canada, what I’ve noticed from my local church, for example, the, the pastor is very focused on principles. Time is important and you do this, but African are more focused on relationship. Yeah. You have to understand this different. I understand both. So because I, I’m coming from Africa, but I live in Canada, so I understand also the, the priority of time and rules and so on. But I also understand that also honoring people is extremely important. You don’t mess with that. If you, you, you, you misunderstand. This part is very difficult, different. And coming from Africa, I also understand that that portion, and I also understand the fact that you have to go to straight to the fact and don’t mess around with things that are not that important.

(38:35):
I live both culture inside of me. And the most important, which is for me is the culture of the kingdom. This is what is most the most important to me. Yeah. But for me, it’s like we are getting prepared to go preach, preach the gospel. I’m going back in Africa and different countries in Africa, hopefully, and I know the cultural shock, even coming from Africa, I still have to learn some things. Perhaps the, the, the, the gap is not as big as someone else, but I still have to get myself acquainted to different cultures, to different way of thinking. Because in Africa, in itself, from a country to another, it’s not the same, the same culture, you still have to learn. So

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (39:22):
Yeah. Even within a country, different tribes Exactly. Will have a completely different

Evangelism Student #1 (39:25):
Culture. Exactly. For example, in KVA we have 50 languages that are spoken just in Covo. So you cannot take for granted that, because I understand this way of thinking that it’s like the same everywhere. No, it’s not. And if you go with also local leaders and local officials, it’s not the same. Also, you have to, to understand that it’s a process that you have to learn. And for me my question was, was like regarding your experience

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (39:58):
Yeah.

Evangelism Student #1 (39:59):
How do you do to get yourself prepared? And how much did it take you to, you know, to be like more flexible regarding that cultural aspect?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (40:12):
Yeah. Well, I still make mistakes. Okay.

Evangelism Student #1 (40:15):
<Laugh>.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (40:16):
But I think

(40:19):
I showed you how I do it in this question. Yeah. You know, first of all, I love people from Ivory Coast. Yeah. You know, so I would start there that I love you. Yeah. I see that you are a man of God. Mm-Hmm. <affirmative>, and you have a passion for God. And so that gives us something common that, that we can, we can work with. And then I would look for anything that we would have in common. So, you know, my wife is from Canada, so I share that. Oh good. You are from Canada. That’s wonderful. So, you know, I’m looking for, I’m looking for things that we do have in common. Cuz every human has things in common, you know you know, I, I share stories about my son and my daughter. I find all over the world, people are proud of their sons and their daughters, you know?

(41:02):
So that gives us something, you know, I talk about my wife, everyone understands that because they have that, those types of relationships. So I look for things in common, then I ask questions and I listen mm-hmm. <Affirmative>. And so I think your insight is extremely valuable, even for, for all of us. Because you do understand both cultures. Yes. The the culture that you came from and then your adopted culture in, in Canada. And you, you have an understanding. And, and, and so I think that I, I try to listen, I ask questions. I try to listen. Like before I go, I would do research on the country research on their religion. What religion they believe I would, I would look at different things. Just try to, to to prepare myself. Okay. But ask questions, listen, show, honor and respect the same things I’m doing with you now. Thank you. Yeah. Very good. Good question. Come on. Give him a great big hand. Wasn’t that? Yeah. Great insight.

Evangelism Student #2 (42:10):
Yeah. Hi. I’m from Germany and God just called us, like us as a family to be missionaries in the United States. Welcome and thank you. And it really came as a surprise because I, I thought God will send us to Asia or Africa. And then he talked about the United States, and I was like, okay, that’s easy. Like that’s a western country. But I talked to missionaries from Germany. They are they are living in the States, and they said it’s a different culture and we have to learn a new culture. And that surprised me. So, and I’m asking you so what could you give me any tips or what to be aware of when you are a German coming to the States and like what topics are, you know, you know what I mean? Like what is important to

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (42:59):
Know? How, how long have you been here?

Evangelism Student #2 (43:02):
So now I’m here since the end of December, but we are going to move here, I think in summer. Okay. So, yes, it’s very fresh. <Laugh>.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (43:10):
What, what what are some of the differences you’ve already noticed?

Evangelism Student #2 (43:14):
The people are very open and very friendly and very cool. And making friendships. And it’s different in Germany, like you’re building trust over a period of time and you’re not so open as a German. So yeah, that’s a big difference. I

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (43:31):
Think that’s true. Americans tend to be very friendly, but sometimes it’s a superficial Yes. Friendship. It’s very surface level. Like, Hey, I’m your friend, and then you, like they never call you or anything. Okay. <laugh>. And so that might be difficult to get used to. Yes. so I think that, that you can bring the good from the German culture, the the value of, of deep friendships. Yes. And, and, and build some deep friendships. But you’ll have to be intentional about building friendships with people. You’ll have to, to to work at it and realize that just superficial level of friendliness is it will be unsatisfying. You’ll think everyone is friendly, but no one is my friend. Yes. So to have true friends, you still have to work at it here in America. Yes.

Evangelism Student #2 (44:27):
Mm-Hmm. <Affirmative>. Yeah. So do you say, would you say it longer to really build real friendships like Sure. And to invest and

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (44:38):
So on? Sure. The, the only way to build a friendship is, is time. And Yes. Shared Yes. Shared experiences. Yes.

Evangelism Student #2 (44:47):
So thank you. Yeah. That’s good to know. <Laugh>. Thank

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (44:49):
You. I hope that you feel very welcome here. Yes. So we welcome you. America needs you. Yes. We need a revival. Bring Amen. Some fire from Germany. Yes, my sister. Hi

Evangelism Student #3 (45:03):
Everyone. My name is Annmarie and I’m from VOI and I have always had a problem. I’m a picky eater and I’m still working on it. So I guess this is going to be my problem. So my question is, what do you do when you go on a mission field and people, they offer you food or drink, and it’s very difficult. <Laugh>, for example, you say no, for example. Yes. For example, in the Ivory coast in the South, we have a tradition of offering people some hot, really hot paper. Really hot paper. It’s powdered chili, powdered real, nothing mixed with that chili powder. <Laugh>. You have never eaten chili. How do you eat that? And then we also have this issue of drinking, for example, some Christian that say you can drink wine. Some others said, no wine, because it’s still alcohol. Do you drink that wine when we you have stopped drinking wine or any kind of alcohol for years? How do you do that? That’s my question. I

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (46:39):
I would just be polite and, and grateful, say, oh, thank you so much. I, I don’t drink that, or, or, thank you. You, you honor me with your bringing me this. But you know, can I, may, may I have some water or something? Okay. You know, I, I think you can be sensitive to it, but without insulting it. Okay. You know,

Evangelism Student #3 (47:01):
So we can say no.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (47:03):
Yeah. You can say,

Evangelism Student #3 (47:04):
No, this is not good for my

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (47:05):
Health. I can say no. Yeah. You can say no. Say, oh, I’m fasting today. <Laugh>.

Evangelism Student #3 (47:10):
Okay. That’s what I was.

Sure. I was serving as a worker in the, what we would now call the former Soviet Union, uh, back in 1991. And I would see these, uh, refugees that would come in from Central Asia building homes and the place to which they were returning. And when they did, so they would work as a team, as a unit, and they would even pass the buckets of concrete or whatever to more the foundations in a kind of a brigade form and in the language that they were using. The word was, uh, briga and it stuck with me that they were, they were doing a kind of a bucket brigade. It all worked together toward this common cause. And when I came back, uh, shortly afterward, I was asked to lead the run up to a big missions convention that was trying to create a lot of, uh, momentum toward finishing the task of world evangelization. And it, uh, it led me to, to kind of think about doing that together across churches, across streams, across orgs. And so I propose, well, why don’t we start, uh, this conversation between each other, uh, maybe just a weekly, uh, some kind of weekly thing that could bring us together. And we got really good, uh, reinforcement from a ton of other people in several circles and started up in 1995, uh, with that idea. And it’s been weekly ever since Daniel, and that’s where we got the name Brigada.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:12):
So if someone is a missionary or passionate about world evangelism, who wants to be involved in the Great Commission, why should they go and sign up to receive emails from you? What, what are some of the benefits that they would receive?

Doug Lucas (03:40):
Brigada. It’s a, an eclectic, uh, collection of resources for people that are both goers and also sins for people who are active in cross-cultural work overseas, as well as those who are advocating and praying for the great commission to be accomplished in sending countries. And so I think that they could, they could end up liking it because out of every week’s, uh, version, hopefully they’ll take away at least one new resource or conference or some kind of, uh, uh, you know, app or idea or trend, maybe some new piece of information that they can get. And it’s, it’s a free resource at the end of each year. We ask folks, uh, if they wanna participate by, by pitching in on the expenses, and we raise just exactly the expenses we need, and we don’t take any extra money. Uh, if people gave money, I, I suppose we need to return it or put it toward the next year, but that’s never happened beyond the minimal expenses that are need just to run it. And it’s always, uh, it’s always been a lot of fun. It’s been going weekly since, uh, January 95. People have told me before that it might be the longest weekly easing on the internet of any kind. I don’t know if that’s true, but some people told me that.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:59):
Well, I’m really impressed with all the work that you put into this and how much you’ve helped so many different people that are involved in the Great Commission. I really like what you, you say that it, these are hacks for the Great Commission. And so let’s talk about like some of the different hacks that you’ve put out in the last year or so. What are some of the different features and articles that would really help missionaries? Uh, more recently,

Doug Lucas (05:28):
Some of the, some of the ways that Brigada is sort of different than maybe another typical eine is that one of the things we do is we throw out a sample of something that we found that works, and then we say, have you found something better in this particular genre? So we might throw out an example of, say, a website that short-term teams can use as a way to build their momentum before they go and, uh, you know, have you found something better? Well, the next Brigada user might comment, yeah, but this one lets them raise funds. And the funding goes through the, through the, through the website, and they only charge 2% for the funding. And then the next guy gets on and says, this one lets them raise funds and it’s one and a half percent plus, they also do newsletters. The people are sitting.

(06:17):
And so what you get is this kind of aggregated set of knowledge about particular genre. And we’ve done things about, for example, travel agents and travel services. We’ve done, uh, trip cancellation insurance policies, which ones are the best we’ve done, uh, what are the best ways to start new churches and multiply groups and multiply disciples, and where’s the best place to learn about that? And what’s the best book about it that you could read? Um, what’s a, an agency that helps you raise support and trains you how to raise support as a missionary? Well, what’s an agency that trains the people that train people to raise support? You know, all the, all the apps and the services for not only the kind of retail goers, but also kind of the wholesale ciders that operate at the, at the cinder level. We have a lot of folks who are very popular in the Misso Nexus world and the, the world of finishing the task and the world of, of, uh, Bible translation and a lot of folks that are kind of out of the old days of what we used to call the Association of Church Missions Committees.

(07:37):
We have a lot of local churches involved and a lot of international people. At one time, I think a guy did a survey about 10 or 15 years ago and found that half of regatta’s readership are international workers in places like Europe and Africa and Asia, Australia, New Zealand, all around the world, since it’s a lot of fun and it’s kind of a global stream that says, let’s get this done.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:59):
Well, if you’re listening and you have a heart for missions, I’d encourage you to go to brita.org and sign up today. And you can also look at past archives of recommendations for various services that are really beneficial that, that missionaries need to know about. It is very important to, to know best practices and which websites and which apps are the best ones to work with. And there’s no time for one person to keep up with everything. But through Brita, you can have recommendations from a wide variety of people who are out there in the field working. And so that’s, that’s it: www.Brigada.org. Now, Mr. Doug, you are very involved yourself in the great commission and leading people to Jesus, uh, through, uh, your, your ministry team expansion, uh, which can be be found TeamExpansion.org. Could you tell us some about the, the overall vision and, and, and mission of, of what you’re doing? Buratta is just one part of that, but, but talk to me about, uh, what you’ve been doing, uh, around the world for so long.

Doug Lucas (09:10):
Thanks. Thanks, Daniel. Brigada is kind of like crowdsourcing missions information and trends and resources, but that, that, that’s not how I’m paid. You know, my day job is actually to work at team expansion where I serve as a president. We have about 400 full-timers in 50 countries. And what we all do is try to make and multiply disciples and churches among unreached people. So when I try to write Brigada , um, I’m writing as a practitioner myself rather than as some marketing person that’s trying to start some website that I can someday develop into a full-time gig. I have no, you know, designs at all to try to do websites full-time. It’s kind of moonlighting on the side to try to share kind of one beggar telling another beggar where to Find Bread. Team Expansion is a mission organization in its own right. That started in 1978 in a little prayer meeting in a, in a dorm room.

(10:06):
And we all signed our names by different countries on the map. And, and, uh, the rest is history. I started out at the lawyer’s office from day one as the, as the president has somehow gotten stuck with the job ever since. And I’m always willing to hand it off to anybody else that wants it, but nobody else has wanted it yet. And we keep growing and we keep, uh, learning. Most of our workers are involved in simple practices that reproduce. We don’t have large, for the most part, large institutions and, and big properties. Were just simple reproducing disciple making movement strategies in, uh, unreached areas. So mostly among Muslims, Hindus, Buddhist, atheists, animus, those are the places where we work. We’re based with the Louisville, Kentucky have a little 61 acre campus here where we, uh, spend time praying and, and do retreats and training people to be able to go in the missions is what we do.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:04):
You have a tremendous focus on reaching on reach people groups and reaching every tribe, nation people with the gospel. What are some of the, the things that you’re finding are most effective at reaching into sometimes very difficult areas to, to talk to people about Jesus?

Doug Lucas (11:26):
You know, Daniel, the thing that’s helped us the most is just simply embracing the tools, the practices, the strategies of disciple making movement, uh, strategy. So dmm, and you could sum those up into, uh, maybe, uh, a handful of practices, a lot of prayer for, for the lost, uh, focusing on helping people obey rather than simply trying to transfer academic content. Um, trying to share a lot about my story or God’s story. In other words, abundant evangelism just everywhere. And just, just always involved in sharing that story, uh, training other people to do the same. That’s a big emphasis in disciple making movement strategy. And then, uh, gathering people into groups, small groups that would utilize discovery, Bible study type, uh, approaches, uh, three-thirds groups, some people call. And so focusing on simple reproducible groups as a means of being the motor for church growth.

(12:31):
And then, uh, I guess multiplying those groups and focusing on multiplication instead of just me always thinking that I have to be the one that adds, making sure that I’m trying to train this new believer so that she or he can multiply as well, and trying to do that out to many generations. And then, uh, focusing on growth among all those people so it’s not, uh, a mile wide and an inch deep, but instead everybody’s growing deep roots and reading a lot of scripture on applying it. So that’s kind of what we’re focused on. That would be the simple practices we would recommend. And

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:06):
Now on your website, it talks about statistics on unreached people groups and, uh, is, as I said, 7.84 billion people in the world today. I think now, maybe a few days ago I heard we’ve gone over 8 billion people, right? It says that there’s 17,409 known people groups, and 7,402 of those groups are considered on reach. K kind of explain the criteria for why one group would be considered reach and another group might be unreached.

Doug Lucas (13:38):
Yeah, it’s a great question. We, uh, have largely followed the kind of the industry norm of saying that an unreached people group would be a significantly large grouping of individuals who perceive themselves to have an affinity. They are perhaps linked by a, an ethnic or a language, uh, likeness with each other. And it’s like the largest number of individuals through which the gospel could flow before it encounters a barrier of understanding or acceptance. So what that means is you could use basically one simple strategy, and it could flow as fast and as hard and as long as it could go. But when it hits that wall of the next language group, then it might take a different, uh, startup in that next language group. Well, that would be defined as an unrich people group. And if you use that definition, that’s where we get those, uh, numbers that you mentioned, probably 7,000 or so, it’s hard to be exact, but around 7,000 groups that still don’t have a viable chance to know about Jesus.

(14:47):
And the typical statistics that you’ll hear used are somewhere between 2% or 5% or less of that group would, would claim to be, uh, an evangelical Christian of any kind. So they’re, they’re basically, by self definition, are they claiming to be a follower of Christ and active in doing that? Well, if that statistic is 2% or less, and if the place where they live doesn’t have some kind of a nominal Christian, uh, followership anyway, like a, a giant, you know, kind of cloud of Catholicism or some kind of, uh, adherence of Christianity, then that people group probably has essentially zero chance to hear about Jesus, you might as well say. And those are the groups, uh, through whom we focus now in this day and age, talking about literally right now in these years, we’re kind of adding in the idea of focusing on unreached places as well. So it’s gonna be unreached people and places as we go forward. That’s kind of the direction in the future. And the places would be simply, you know, districts or states or villages that don’t have a church. So people couldn’t hear about Jesus there either.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:04):
And why do you feel that it’s important for the church to pray for unreached people groups and then to, to start to engage them? A lot of people when they first start getting interested in missions, they might go on a short term trip to, to Mexico. And of course there’s, there’s lots of, of churches in Mexico, but why, why should the church care about these outreach people groups, and why should we put resources towards that area of outreach?

Doug Lucas (16:29):
It, it is, uh, a great, great question, Daniel. I’m glad you asked first because of course, we want the church to grow into all those peoples and places because it’s the vision that, uh, John records in Revelation seven. You know, it’s the promise of the end of the ages. In fact, was it Matthew 24 14 or so, we’re told that the gospel will, you know, be spoken and preached to every person, and then the end will come, um, the every nation, and then the end will come. Well, the, the expectation is that God is sort of leaning against the guardrail of heaven waiting for something to happen, and he’s waiting for apparently every single nation to have had a chance to hear. And then revelation seven, the vision will happen. All people’s, all nations, all tribes will be gathered and there’ll be representatives from every nation and tribe standing before his throne in a white robe.

(17:33):
There’s no way we can have that vision accomplished until we go to all those places. Then a secondary vision is we know that when the gospel does travel there, people can have peace and they can be happier. And in general, life picks up, you know, they have a hope, and that’s important. But then a third reason we do it is because Jesus said to, I mean, it’s just a simple command. In Matthew 28, for example, uh, 1920, Daniel Jesus said, make disciples of all nations. And you know, that word for nation is not the word that we would have expected it to be in English. If we were to use the word nation today, we think of a political nation, but the root word back then, it was a word that’s more likely would’ve been translated ethnic group. In fact, they didn’t even have political nations like we have today back in Jesus’ time. So these would be tribes or casts or kindreds. And if Jesus said, make disciples of every ethic group, you know, teach them to obey what I’ve told them to do at every ethic group, I just figure we ought to be about it. We ought to be doing it.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:43):
Amen. Well, if you want to learn more about reaching on reach people groups, I encourage you to go to team expansion.org, find out more about Doug Lucas and about reaching unreached people groups. And if you wanna support reaching Unre people groups, I encourage you to go and support their ministry. Mr. Doug, thank you so much for being on the Evangelism Podcast. I appreciate it.

Doug Lucas (19:07):

Daniel Bäckrud is young, but he has already visited many countries to preach the gospel. God gave him a vision of an island in Indonesia, and he found an unreached people group on that island. Today we talk about his plans to reach out to this unreached people group.

Evangelism Podcast Host (00:32):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies, and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary, and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:57):
Welcome to The Evangelism Podcast. I’m Daniel King, and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus. Today I have a very special guest with me, Daniel Bäckrud. Thank you for joining me on the Evangelism Podcast.

Daniel Bäckrud (01:08):
Thank you for having me. I’m so glad to be with you today.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:11):
So we are together in the nation of Turkey in Istanbul, and we have both come here for a conference with ace, the Association of Campaign Evangelists. And so this is an organization that is dedicated to preaching the gospel through gospel campaigns in, in many different parts of the world. And they are identifying evangelists, they are encouraging evangelists and giving evangelists opportunities to go to different nations. And so you actually got connected to them when you were very young. Tell me the story of what happened.

Daniel Bäckrud (01:52):
Yeah, so when I was in Bible school at, in my early twenties, I was picked up. There was one of the evangelists in the network who saw the gift in me and he welcomed me to, to this network and gave me the training I needed. And one of the organizations inside the network was training me as a trainee for, for first one year. And then I was sent out as an evangelist inside this network. And, you know, all the different evangelists and their experience and the teaching I’ve got and the access to different fields, what I have been able to travel and preach. It has been so valuable for my, my own ministry and my own journey and the work I’ve been doing for God.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:36):
So you had a period of training first. Can you tell me what that looked like and what were some of the things that you learned?

Daniel Bäckrud (02:42):
Yeah, so I was traveling on, on campaigns first as just to watch. And then I started to doing warmups to, to pre preaching on other campaigns. And then I got at my third campaign, I got the one of the nights on my own to preach. And, and my fourth campaign, I had the whole campaign myself. So it has been a, a progress of training where, where I learned how to, how to preach, how to do an call, how to pray for the sick, how to show the testimonies to to be clear and, and to, to be so that people can, can really sense that the, the testimonies.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:23):
What was the first country that you went to and how did you feel when you first stepped out on a campaign grounds and saw all the people?

Daniel Bäckrud (03:33):
Yeah, so the first campaign I was, and I’ve been on other mission trip before, but the first campaign was was in Pakistan. And I I had a warm up there and I felt that this is the thing I would do for the rest of my life.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:49):
And then where was the campaign where you got to preach for the first time and then where did you go, where you did the whole campaign on your fourth one?

Daniel Bäckrud (04:00):
Yeah, so both of those was in India where the organization I’ve been serving has been, been serving in the northeast of India. And we have had lots of campaigns there and I have been also having many campaigns there afterwards. So, so yeah, it was in, it was in India.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:20):
And tell me where you have been going since then. What, what doors have God opened and what are some of the countries that you’ve really enjoyed visiting?

Daniel Bäckrud (04:31):
Yeah, so, so through the organization, I am serving as an evangelist in Go Out Mission and the network of Ace, I have been able to, to do campaigns in, in India, in Sri Lanka, in Pakistan, in not campaign, but missions in, in Thailand campaigns in Western Africa, Guinea and Togo, and also Madagascar. So there are quite, quite many countries that I have been traveling the past five years. So

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:55):
You’ve been to a lot of countries. We’ve gone to many of those countries. I love Madagascar. We did five campaigns there in Madagascar over the years, and it’s such a beautiful country. All right. So recently I heard you share a testimony of a quite impactful thing that God did in your life. You were on a zoom call and someone began to speak in tongues and, and prophetically God spoke to you through this te tell me what happened.

Daniel Bäckrud (05:28):
Yeah, so we had this ACE (Association of Campaign Evangelists) conference online, last year, September. And,there was one of the evangelists who spoke in tongues. And as she opened her mouth, I started to shake and my sight became blurry and I started to cry and I started to, to uto, to sweat. And,I saw a vision in front of my eyes where there was a map of Indonesia. And you have to, to, to, to understand that I did not know anything about Indonesia before this. I could not describe the map. I didn’t know the names of the islands, and I didn’t know so many of the islands. I know the, the, the big one to the left and the, the big one to the right and the two in the middle. But I didn’t know anything but that. But I saw a red spot, God, God showed me a red spot in the sea between one of the biggest islands, two of the biggest islands.

Daniel Bäckrud (06:20):
And I went to the Google Maps searching for, for what is on this red spot. And I found out that there were two islands on this, this red spot that I did not know of before. And I felt God speaking to me, you must go here. And I went to, to Joshua Project and other databases over unreached people groups. And I found out that there are two groups that are considered unreached on those islands. So we reached out to one of our friends that are working in Indonesia, other parts of Indonesia, a woman called Susan Hoover, a wonderful woman of God who have done tremendously work. And you have been working with her as well?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:59):
Yeah. So Susan Hoover, a great woman of God from the nation of Canada. Yeah. She originally went to Indonesia as a missionary from Peter Youngin’s ministry. And God gave her a gift for languages. And so she very quickly learned how to speak Indonesian and now speaks it fluently with the accent of the people. And people are always surprised to see her. She’s as white as can be, but yet she speaks perfect Indonesian. And so she has a bible school in Madan, been doing many campaigns in different parts of Indonesia, and, and she’s a, a, a dear friend of my wife and, and our family. And so she’s doing great work there in Indonesia. So you knew that she was there working in Indonesia. You called her What happened?

Daniel Bäckrud (07:51):
Yeah, so we had a sue meeting with her. It was, this was during the pandemic, so, so the, the, the borders was close. The immigration policy of Indonesia was very strict, so we couldn’t travel there. It was impossible to get any visa. So we were, we, we were reaching out and planning this and said, as soon as the country opens up, we want to come. And she promised to, to provide interpreter for us in send one of her staff to, to interpret for me. And I was refreshing the, the immigration policy on the, the websites like every week since. And suddenly in in the spring this year, 2022 the, the, the, the country opened up for, for, for some countries in Sweden. What is included? Well, one of the first ones. So I booked the ticket one week after the, the country opened up, and a few months later I went there and yeah, Susan provided an interpreter that traveled a long way with me.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:53):
And so you took your interpreter, you went out to these islands that are just dots on the map in the place where God gave you a vision, and you went and looked at some of the databases like Joshua Project that gives information about unreached and unengaged people, groups people groups that don’t have any church or any believers that are reproducing in their society. And it gave you some information about those islands and some of the people that were supposed to be there. And, and so you just went to investigate? Yeah,

Daniel Bäckrud (09:34):
Yeah. It was you know, investigating trip and we, we went there to do some research to, to finding some way to, to reach those people. And my first goal was to, to find those people groups that was in the database. And

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:49):
So what were the names in the database of the people groups

Daniel Bäckrud (09:53):
There, there to its Banca and it’s Beletu,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:55):
Okay. And so tell me that process. You’re, you’re there on the island and you’re looking for these unreached people groups. How did that go?

Daniel Bäckrud (10:03):
Yeah, so we wanted to, to like have a local foundation to, to put our feets on the ground. So we went with a motorbike,me and my interpreter, he was driving it and I was sitting on the back and we went, looked at Google Maps because we had no connections. So we went look at Google Maps and we find some churches and we went there, we knocked the door and we asked for the pastor and we talked to the pastor, interviewing them and, and asking, Do you know about these people? And, and, where do we find them?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:33):
Okay. And and what’d they say?

Daniel Bäckrud (10:36):
Yeah. So the problem was that we, we went from door to door speaking with 10 15 pastors, and no one ever heard about those groups.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:46):
Okay. So you’ve, you, the database says that there’s on reach people groups there, and you go and are looking for the banca people. Yeah. And people are saying, I don’t know where they are. Yeah. So, so then what happened? You, you, you said that you had like a recording of the language. Yeah,

Daniel Bäckrud (11:05):
Yeah. So we, I was staying in, in a home of Su Susan had a student that was originally from this area. So we were invited to sleep in the house of, of his grand, her grandparents. And they were, they were Muslims original from Malaysia. And we, we really blessed to, to, to stay in their home. And you know, as we, as we were traveling around asking for, for this group that was called Banca in the database, I, I had the recording in my phone that I got from, from Wcl, that is translating Bible and, and giving resources. And I played it because we, we never find the people groups. So I, I, I tried to play this and I asked, What language is this? And it turns out that that was Hacka, which is a Chinese language. And it turns out that all the pastors that we were met were from that tribe.

Daniel Bäckrud (12:04):
And then I asked, What, what about all these other people that are Muslims? What, what are they? And they said, they are the malai, they are from, from Malaysia, and they, they live total separate life from the Chinese. And it turns out that this Malai people, they have developed their own dialect of Malaysia, Malaysia language Malai. And it has, that language is called Banca. So the tribe that was in the database called Banca is locally called the Malai because they are originally from Malaysia. And so I’ve been traveling all over the island searching for a people group, and at the end of the day, it, it, it’s turns out that every night I came home eating dinner, sleeping in the bed, talking with people who was the people group banca.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:01):
Wow. So you, you finally found them. I did. You you went searching. Yeah. You’re on a treasure hunt. Yeah. And you found this people who God loves very much. And, and, and God led you there. God gave you a vision that that led you to this place. Yeah. And, and so that was just the beginning. You, you, you didn’t know anyone at first. You just had an interpreter go with you. You met some people and now you’re, you’re planning to go back and you, you’re actually putting together a plan that’s going to take several years to complete to, to actually reach these people. Yeah. And so it hasn’t happened yet, but you’re in process, so you’re about to go back. And can you kind of explain what you’re doing on, on the second trip and then what you hope will happen in the future?

Daniel Bäckrud (13:49):
Yeah. So at the first trip at the end of the week, we met with one pastor who is a very, very much a man of peace. He’s a very honorable man. He’s an ex-marine and he’s a pastor who has built up lots of churches among the Chinese tribe. And he’s a wonderful man of God who has done tremendously work the past 30 years. And we, we had a hard connection with him and we have been communicating with him both when I was there the last time, but also with, with phones and zooms meetings since then. So this time I’m invited to, to his church, have a couple of conferences to speak to both leaders and youths and their congregation. And you know, right now I’m building more relationship with him so that we find trust in each other to, to, you know, pull out a vision how to, how to reach those people because there are one, 1.5 million people unreached on those islands that have no access to the gospel. Right now, there are no Bible in the language. There are no churches, there are no pastors, there are no worship songs. There are nothing in their context. So it’s a lot of work that has to be done.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:10):
Indonesia has a unique situation because many of the Christians in Indonesia come from a Chinese background. And since they’re Chinese, they are good in business. And so when they come into the church, the, they give money to the church. The church is, is well off. But then you also have lots of groups that are Muslim and they tend to be poor. And so in many countries that you go to, the Christians are very poor, and then the, the, the other people are rich. But in Indonesia, it’s kind of flipped. The Christians are rich, but they don’t always know how to reach people. I think in talking to them every Indonesian Christian I’ve talked to wants to reach people, but sometimes it’s difficult to work cross culturally cuz even though they’re in the same country, they often speak the same language. They, they have a different culture. It’s Chinese versus Muslim, and there’s lots of differences in culture and, and that type of thing. And, and so part of reaching the Unre people is giving a vision to the churches that come from a different culture, how they can develop missionaries that will go from their culture into another culture. Yeah.

Daniel Bäckrud (16:37):
Yeah. Everything you see is, is absolutely correct. This is cross-cultural missionary we’re looking for inside the nation. And yeah, we, I i, if we do this again next day’s conference, maybe I have more, more answers because we are, we are in the process and we are in the beginning of the beginning of this journey in this province bunk be. So yeah, this is this is the challenge we have in ahead of us, but we believe in God’s grace, in God’s miracles and God’s favor. And we just pray that the Holy Spirit will lead people into the heart of a missionary Yeah. On those islands.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:18):
Well, I, I really admire your boldness in going, you don’t have a contact, you just have a, a vision from God, and it takes great faith to, to go to just start knocking on doors of churches that you find on Google until you find the the right man of peace. Who can you explain kind of what a man of peace is? What, what is that?

Daniel Bäckrud (17:44):
Yeah, that probably, there are many definitions, but to me, a man of peace is, you know, the local person who has access to both other churches and also the society and has keys to reach into different, both churches, but also among the, the people that we are about to reach and who has the heart for, for missions, who has the heart to reach people, who has the burden of souls in the heart and is also open to cooperate with, with, you know, the, the person we need to accomplish what God has put in our hearts that the matter. Peace.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:21):
Another thing I think you’re being really smart with is developing relationships, going in, starting to, to talk to people, develop relationships, asking a lot of questions. I think sometimes foreigners come and they feel like they have all the answers and they know this is how you reach people. Yeah. But you have to work with the people that are there, the in work within their culture and how they, they do things. And so, so you’re, you’re doing this step by step. This is not something you want to accomplish immediately. This is something that you want to make a commitment to for, for years to come. Yeah.

Daniel Bäckrud (19:01):
Yeah. You know, this, this job includes so many things. We are starting to, to train people during this upcoming week. I’m hoping that we can have a, a group that are committing to cross culture missionary and that we can train them for, for several months, and that we can send them to, to, to this tribes. And that we can follow up on that by doing evangelistic events or festivals or campaigns or crusade or whatever name you wanna put on it. But, but reaching people in, in masses in those, those villages that’s what we want to do long term and, and checking villages by villages to, to to really have an impact in this, in this people group.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:46):
Well, I really think that your story can inspire people who are listening, who are wondering, you know, where should I go? God, you know, maybe they have the desire to go, but they don’t know where to go. Well get a vision from God. Go find an island that needs Jesus and, and just go, You may not have context. You may not know what to do. Just go, you know, Jesus said in Mark 1615, Go into all the world Yeah. And preach the gospel. And so two thirds of God’s name is go and <laugh>. And so you have to be like God, and, and, and go. And if you’ll just go, then you’ll begin to see miracles happen. And I know that you will see miracles happen. I know that you will see people in this tribal group come to Jesus, You’ll see churches established. And, and so I think we should make an appointment to talk again in two or three years to share the testimony of how you can reach a whole island for Jesus

Daniel Bäckrud (20:45):
<Laugh>. That is wonderful. Thank you for your faith and your encouragement. Just to add something about to, to what you said of course we don’t need like a clear vision of a place to go, just to go. We don’t have to, to wait on the, the fire scripture on the wall. It Bible is very clear. Go into all the earth, lot of places included in that challenge,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (21:09):
<Laugh>. Yeah. So if you go somewhere on the earth, you are in God’s will He told you to go. You can expect him to go with you.

Daniel Bäckrud (21:16):
Exactly. Exactly. So, you know, I have been traveling as an evangelist for, for five years before I got this vision, having tremendous success in many places, seeing so many miracles and people say to God. And yeah. You know I, I never had anyone telling me what country to go to before that. I just went with wherever it was possible. And yeah. Suddenly I got this vision and I, I have to be faithful with that because not many people get that clear vision.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (21:49):
Amen. Well, let’s finish by saying a word of prayer. Yeah. For these people, obviously they’re on God’s heart. God gave you a vision, and, and so let’s just pray for them.

Daniel Bäckrud (22:01):
Yes. So, Heavenly Father, we just place this people group banca and the people group of Bella tomb before your heart. Thank you that you have created them. Thank you that you love them with your heart. Thank you that you are their father. And let me be the tool to realize, let them realize who their father is. Lord, thank you that you love them so much, and I pray that you will put your love for this people in my heart. Let me feel what you feel. Let me see what you see. And we just pray for those churches that exist among other groups. We just pray that you will send your fire, that you will send your, your, your strength and your power and your will and your, your, your, your eager to reach those people for these churches. Lord, we just pray that upon them. We thank you for all the work that has been done. We honor everything that has been been happening in the past, and we just thank you for all the tremendous work that those pastors has been doing. But we pray that you will give them visions further to reach new tribes, new places where your gospel has not been preached before. Amen.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (23:06):
Amen. Well, thank you, Daniel for being on the Evangelism Podcast.

Daniel Bäckrud (23:09):
Thank you for having me.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (23:11):

Evangelism Podcast Host (00:32):
Welcome to the evangelism podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews, full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:56):
Welcome to the evangels of podcast. I’m Daniel King, and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus today. I have a very special guest with me, Dave Gibson. He is from Grace Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Thank you for being with me today.

Pastor Dave Gibson (01:11):
Daniel, thrilled to be with you.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:13):
So you are the missions pastor at the church, but you are involved in so many different missions opportunities around the world. Tell me a little bit about what you do.

Pastor Dave Gibson (01:25):
Well, my you cut me in, I bleed missions. I’m the missions at evangels of pastor at Grace Church, but the Lord has extended that reach into ministries, like finishing the task, working with the evangelism and the church planting finish lines. The chairman of the board of global Alliance for church multiplication. Also the us director for goal movement part of the global goal movement, trying to mobilize believers all around the world to be sharing the gospel.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:54):
Yeah, I absolutely love the, the go movement I was with Mr. Verner Nigal who founded the go movement in Malawi this last year. And I got to interview him on the evangelism podcast and it was great. So if, if you want to go back and listen to his interview you can find Verner’s story, wonderful man of God, from Germany who has this vision to equip the entire body of Christ to, to, to share the gospel. And so tell me a little bit about what you do with the go movement and, and how they’re equipping people.

Pastor Dave Gibson (02:26):
Well, the mantra, the theme is every believer is a witness for Jesus. It came out of the global day of prayer led by Graham power. He mobilized almost 200 million people to be praying together on that global day of prayer on Pentecost weekend, Wener have approached Graham power years ago about a dozen years ago. And he says, why don’t we couple prayer and evangelism and make a, a global outreach day on that same weekend Pentecost weekend. Can’t think of a better time to be sharing the good news of the Easter story. And then 50 days later says, wait until you receive power from on high receive the power of the holy spirit and you shall be my witnesses. And so that became a global outreach day. Then it turned into a global outreach month. So the window between may one and the end of may is time we call the go month trying to mobilize believers.

Pastor Dave Gibson (03:17):
It’s really a simple every believer is a witness for Jesus Christ. We say everyone can reach someone and together we can reach the world. And so the question is, who’s your someone, someone in your family, someone in your neighborhood, someone in the workplace someone that you recreate with and identify those sum ones to get five of those individuals. And we call it our favorite five or my five, and then we employ a real simple strategy, pray for them and then care for them. Then lovingly appropriately, try to share Jesus Christ with them. So it’s simple prayer care share. And it’s not a program. It’s not an event that people go to, but it’s just individual believers who are oftentimes so many Christians are sitting on their blessed assurance in the church, waiting for the Lord to return without ever sharing their faith. In fact, bill bright said that I don’t know where he got the statistic, but 95% of Christians will go to the grave without ever leading one person to faith in Christ. So we’re trying to move the dial on that and really energize people to be witnesses for Jesus Christ. There’s an estimated close to a hundred million Christians sharing the gospel this past may. And we’ve got a group of guys, guys like Greg steer and Warner and myself. We’ve got a one a day challenge, kinda like the ice bucket challenge.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:34):
Now. Now tell me about the, the one a day challenge.

Pastor Dave Gibson (04:36):
Okay. Well, we said one a day in may that we’re going to ask

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:41):
The, what, what do you mean by one a day one? What

Pastor Dave Gibson (04:43):
Trying to share Jesus with at least one person every day we say, oh, look for that one loss sheep, Luke 15 Jesus said, leave the 99 righteous. We need to get out of the church and go after that one law sheep, that one person look for the person of peace. Who’s receptive to the message and the messenger and ask God to lead us to that person. And the one of day challenges that I’m gonna try to pray for someone care for somebody, and then try to share the gospel with at least one person every day in the month of may. That’s expanded to beyond that. Now it’s one a day, every day.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:20):
So one a day, every day. And so if you’re listening, I challenge you to take up that commitment that you’ll lead at least one person to Christ every single day. You know, I’m reminded of the story of DL moody. He had a commitment to lead someone to Jesus every single day of his life. And, and one day someone talked to him and said, Hey, did you lead someone to Jesus today? And he says, yes, two and a half people. And they said two and a half like, oh, you mean you, you led two adults and one child to the Lord. He says, no, no. He says, I led two children and one adult because the, the children, they have their entire lives ahead of them. But the adult, his life is half over. Oh. And I’m also remembered of John Hyde. They called him praying Hyde. He was a missionary in what is now Northern Pakistan and over into India. At that time, it was one country. And he made a commitment to prey that at least one day that at least one soul would be led to Jesus every single day. And he, he, he challenged all the Christian believers there let’s let’s believe God and pray for at least one person to be saved every single day. And in the first year they had 365 people that got saved. They completed that goal.

Pastor Dave Gibson (06:33):
Yeah. In fact, that was in 1908. That that story really challenged me years ago when I was ready. How’d you like to be known as Daniel praying king or Dave praying Gibson, John praying hide. He prayed for souls. He had a burden for souls. In fact, his heart was in such rough condition. He went to the cardiologist. He, if you don’t change your patterns, he prayed with such fervency and intensity that his heart actually moved in his heart cavity, but he prayed for one soul a day and had about 400 the first year, 1909. He prayed for two souls a day. And the Lord gave him over 800 that came to Christ. Then the next year, 1910, he prayed for four souls a day. And the Lord answered that prayer. And I said, boy, how big is my faith that he was leading at those people to Christ? And they were, they were being baptized and consecrated to the Lord. I’ve just said, well, the Lord do I have enough faith to ask for at least one opportunity every day. And I, I just really believe we need to see people in the church energized and mobilized for the, the gospel. That’s why I hang around guys like Warner and Greg steer with dare to share. And guys like you, Daniel, you inspire me.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:41):
Yeah. Well John Hyde, there, there in Pakistan started a convention called the Seattle cult convention. And it is the longest running Christian convention in Pakistan. And so a few years ago I was invited to be one of the speakers. And they said, this, this conference now over a hundred years, goes all the way back to, to praying hide. And so when I was there, they took me to the house that he used to, to sleep in. And they showed me his bed. And, and beside the bed there there’s bumps in the ground where they say his knees were when he used to get beside his bed and pray. And so even a hundred years later, I don’t know if it’s really his bumps, but, but they, they had that tradition that, that he had been a, a, a prayer warrior and had such a, a tremendous impact.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:29):
Most of the believers in Pakistan to this day trace their spiritual heritage back to that commitment that John Hyde made to, to share the gospel. And they said that he was so excited about sharing the gospel. That like one day he was walking down the, the path and talking to a Hindu man telling him about Jesus, let him to Jesus. And there was an irrigation ditch right beside the road. And he says, come on, let’s baptize you right now. And so they just jumped in the irrigation ditch and they baptized him. So I think we need more of that. Yeah. Ferver for both prayer and for witnessing right today.

Pastor Dave Gibson (09:05):
Yeah. And I, I, I think that’s a prayer that the Lord loves to answer. I pray that every day I was traveling to San Francisco with a colleague, a guy from the church businessman got into the church or into the hotel really late, tired after midnight. And you know, it says in Colossians four, two to six is devote yourselves to prayer, be alert in it. Let’s be watchful, keep your spiritual antenna and be thankful. And he says, pray for me that God will open up a door for the ministry of the word that I can speak forth. A mystery of Christ. I call it praying for Bob every day. First of all, for a burden for the lost, then open doors of opportunity, you know, and Romans nine Paul said, I have deep, deep anguish in my soul for my countrymen.

Pastor Dave Gibson (09:50):
We’ve lost the burden. And we need to ask the Lord to break our hearts and give us a heart of compassion and a burden for the loss like he does and open doors for the gospel. He says, pray for me that God will open up a door and that I would boldly proclaim it as I should. Paul prayed for that in Ephesians six, 19 and 20, he said, pray for me that whenever I open my mouth words will be given to me that I might fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel and that Boldy proclaimed it as I should. Well pray for Bob, but well, anyways back.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:19):
Okay. So you have pray for Bob B O B. So B stands for

Pastor Dave Gibson (10:24):
A burden burden for the loss

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:26):
Burden for the lost O stands for

Pastor Dave Gibson (10:28):
Open doors for the gospel

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:30):
Open doors for the gospel. And the second B stands for

Pastor Dave Gibson (10:33):
Boldness the holy boldness to share.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:35):
All right, so, so burden open doors and boldness. And so every day, pray for Bob, right?

Pastor Dave Gibson (10:42):
Pray for Bob. Well, I did on that particular day, prayed for that. God would open up a door, came into the hotel, checked in, and it’s like, the Lord said, Dave, you need to pray for this woman ne patid our gal from India. And I said, ne we’re going to, before we retire here tonight, like you seem like you’re really discourage. Is there something we can pray about? And her eyes welled up with tears as she shared, she said, my husband and I came to the us 10 years ago, purchased two hotels. This last year, a man came in and started destroying our property. And my husband went out to restrain him as he did. He reached into his coat pocket and he pulled out a gun and he shot my husband in the head and she’s crying as she’s sharing this story. And we begin to weep along with her.

Pastor Dave Gibson (11:30):
And her, their manager came out, the guy turned the gun on the manager shot and killed him. And her husband died in her arms. And she was about as empty and lonely and distraught as I’ve ever seen a person. I said, NELA, I don’t even know what to say, but can we just pray right now? And we prayed and we prayed and we prayed for her that gotta be merciful and be gracious to her and just have compassion on this dear woman. And just we had a prayer meeting there that night, and then I got done. And I said, NELA, has anybody shared with you? How you can know the God we were just talking to in a personal way. She said, no, but please do. You know, after many years of evangelism training, I proceed that it might be a witnessing opportunity.

Pastor Dave Gibson (12:09):
So I, I just proceeded to share about Jesus, the good news of the gospel that God created us to be with him. Our sins separate us from him and sin. Can’t be removed by good works, paying the price for sin. Jesus died and rose again. And everyone who trusted him alone will have eternal life in that life with Jesus starts now and lasts forever to the simple message of the gospel. Holy spirit just came upon her. She broke down, gave her life to Christ. And this Hindu woman found new life in Jesus Christ. And the tears of anguish turned to tears of joy. She was just overwhelmed. And she came out around the counter and she hugged us and said, God brought you to me tonight. You’re God’s angel. I said, NELA, I’m not an angel. Just ask my wife, Wendy. But I said, God did bring us together.

Pastor Dave Gibson (12:53):
And I could have just checked in, taken the key and said, God bless you, NELA goodnight. But God said, you know, be alert, be watchful be devoted to prayer. And then God will move and give you opportunities. When we start praying for those opportunities. The divine order for witnessing has talked to God about men, then talk to men about God. And we want to try to build a bridge from our heart to their heart, that Jesus can walk across and touch their lives and that heart of compassion. So that was a cool story. Neah just was radically transformed by the power of Jesus and I I’m addicted to souls. I mean, I want to that one a day challenge. And sometimes it’s two or three a day. We here at together, 22, we’ve had a, a plethora of opportunities to share the gospel. Yeah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:40):
I know that you mentor and encourage many evangelists and missionaries. What advice would you give to someone who, who has a heart for evangelism, maybe a, a young evangelist or someone who wants to go to the mission field? What advice would you give them

Pastor Dave Gibson (13:58):
Grow deep in your walk with Jesus and go wide in your witness? I don’t think it’s one or the other. It’s the two wings of the

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:07):
Earth, deep and wide,

Pastor Dave Gibson (14:08):
Deep and wide deep in discipleship wide in your witness for Christ that’s evangelism. I believe evangelism will fuel discipleship and discipleship should fuel evangelism. And I think we look at it as an either or proposition sometimes in the church, but growing deep and every day renew your first love for Jesus. Ask the Lord to give you that reverential fearing of him, and really pray for that burden for souls, that you really have a burden. You know, Jesus said the good man out of the good treasure of his heart will bring forth. What is good. The evil man out of the evil treasure will bring forth. What is, what is evil? He Luke 6 44 to 46 for the mouth. We’ll speak from that, which fills the heart. You know, the way they got the early church to witness. You just took your hand away from their mouth.

Pastor Dave Gibson (14:58):
They said, we can’t stop talking about that, which we’ve seen. And we’ve heard, I think we’ve got a heart issue that we’ve lost the heart for the Lord, the heart for the lost keep cultivating that heart for the Lord and the heart for the lost, and then be bold. Pray for Bob every day. I mean, there’s a lot of things I would share with him, but hang around people, you wanna stay hot for God, hang around pee for people that are on fire. That’s why a guy like Greg steer. We’re a couple of one string guitar guys. I mean people that are really passionate about the Lord and passionate about evangelism, and that’s why I’m drawn to you, Daniel, cuz you’re the same kind guy. You’re a one string guitar guy and they renew your first love for Jesus every day.

Pastor Dave Gibson (15:38):
Hang around people that are on fire and then be active in sharing your faith. Finally in six says I pray that you’ll be active in sharing your faith so that you’ll have a full understanding of every good thing that you have in Christ. Jesus. I don’t think we have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ. If we’re not actively sharing our faith, I’ve got a picture of my wife on my phone and I’m not embarrassed to show it to people. She’s very beautiful. But you know, I’ll, I’ll introduce people, but can you imagine if I had Wendy by my side? And I say, well, honey, I kind of embarrassed to introduce you to other people. But no, I love to talk about my wife. We love to talk about things we love and there’s someone I love you. And more than my dear wife, Wendy of 37 years, it’s Jesus.

Pastor Dave Gibson (16:21):
I am so radically in love with Jesus. Be so in love with Jesus that it becomes contagious and I would love to introduce other people to him. So, and I encourage them to do that. And that Lord will set you on fire. Young evangelist and people will come and watch you burn. You know, Daniel, I’ve got a scar on my arm here. It’s a daily reminder. I had a triple bypass back in 2008, had a mild heart attack. And I was pretty healthy going before that time, woke up with some pressure in my chest called 9 1 1. Next thing I know I’m in a putting pulled outta my house on a gurney and the paramedics had had arrived and my five kids are watching. Dad pulled outta the house on a gurneys, quite a feeling and got into the ambulance. We’re going down to the hospital.

Pastor Dave Gibson (17:08):
Wasn’t having cardiac arrest. But I, I, I, I looked at the guy, his name was Doug. He said I said, Doug, you know, I don’t think this thing’s gonna turn out bad, but if it does, you need to know on no uncertain terms. I know where I’m gonna spend eternity. How about you? And so the whole way down to the hospital I was sharing Jesus with him. I thought, man, if I’m gonna go down, I might as well try to bring one lost soul with me, got to the hospital. And I said, Daniel, this ride might have been just for you. And never saw him since that day. I asked him to promise me, he’d come to Grace Church sometime and come up and say hello. He said he would. And had the triple bypass ended up having open heart surgery.

Pastor Dave Gibson (17:50):
I called Wendy, my wife and I said, honey, bring every single track that you can find in the house. And I’m gonna share Jesus with every single person that walks through the door of this hospital room. I was urgent about the gospel till then, but I was ultra urgent. And I have been every day, since life is short and hell is hot and I wanna do everything I can to prevent people from going there. Live my life to depopulate hell and populate heaven for the glory of Christ. So I’m Sharon Christ with these people and it’s led to things like this one a day challenge, 10 years later, I’m down at in Nebraska speaking at a fellowship of Christian athletes event and a good buddy of mine played for the corn Huskers. And he was introducing me. He says, Dave doesn’t even know this, but we were up in the Minneapolis area.

Pastor Dave Gibson (18:36):
This last summer, one of our girls tweaked her knee and a guy named Daniel, a paramedic came out, his name was Daniel. And he said do you go to church anywhere? He says, yeah, I go to Grace Church once in a while. And he said, well, do you know pastor Dave Gibson? He said, yeah, he’s the guy who led me to Jesus Christ through an ambulance ride. And I never knew that he was so far out there, but you know, the word says one will plant and another will water. And it’s the Lord who brings forth the increase so that he who plants nor he waters as anything. It’s the Lord who makes it grow. But you know, that God’s word never returns void. When you plant that gospel seed, it’s the power of God under salvation to those who believe so gave me a sense of urgency. So I look at my arm, I, they took one of the veins outta my arm and couple out of my chest. And that’s my daily reminder of we need to be urgent with the good news of Jesus.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:26):
Yeah. None of us are promised tomorrow. So we need to make every single second count for God.

Pastor Dave Gibson (19:31):
Amen. Only one life will soon be passed. Only what’s done for Christ will last. I think that’s an old CT stud quote and let’s live our lives for Jesus no matter.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:43):
That’s awesome. Well, thank you so much for being on the evangelism podcast. It’s great to have you here today.

Pastor Dave Gibson (19:48):
Thank you Daniel. Great to get to know you better and thanks for the good work that you’re doing too, to reach the world for Jesus.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:55):
Thank you. Thanks so much for listening today. Calvin hunter is a young evangelist who is traveling to cities across America to reach people for Jesus. His ministry is called amped and they use music, bouncy houses in extreme sports to attract the lost. Evangelism Podcast Host (00:37):
Welcome to the evangelism podcast with Dr. Daniel King were Daniel interviews. Full-Time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary and evangelist Daniel King. Welcome

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:01):
To do the evangelism podcast. I’m Daniel King, and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus today. I have a special guest with me, Calvin hunter. He is the director of amped ministries and through their ministry. They’re going to communities all over the United States, telling people about Jesus, Calvin, thank you for being with me today.

Calvin Hunter (01:23):
Thank you, sir. Great to be here,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:25):
Calvin. What does the word amped mean? Tell me about how you came up with that.

Calvin Hunter (01:31):
So AMPED means Awakening Mankind’s Powerful Eternal Destiny. It is a vision that God put on our heart to go into the cities across America, to stir up the people, to see the destiny and the call that God has for their life, for them to, to start walking in that full potential that God has for them.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:53):
Can you tell me about some of what you’ve done recently?

Calvin Hunter (01:58):
Yeah. recently with amped, I was actually just in Houston, 10 Xs, where we took we worked at the local church there and we took people out on the streets and we did one-on-one street evangelism with the people there in Houston and reached over a thousand people face to face with the gospel. My wife and I personally did, and a span of about 10 dates. And so that was something that we did recently was the one-on-one outreach because every person, as you know, is called to do the work of an evangelist. Everyone has an anointing, has been given the gift of soul winning.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:37):
So tell me, what is that, What does that look like doing one-on-one evangelism? What are you saying? What responses are you getting from people?

Calvin Hunter (02:47):
Yeah, you know, I would say with one on one evangelism, it looks very different for each person at times. You know there is a pattern I personally like to stick with the place of, like, the Bible says that the goodness of God leads me to repentance. So with me, I like to stick with the place of letting people know that number one, Jesus loves them. So I always start a conversation, letting the person know, Hey, I want to tell you something today. I, to tell you that God loves you and he has a plan for your life. And so I always start the conversation with letting them know that Jesus loves them. You say, well, why would I start the conversation that way? Well, for me, it’s very personal because in 2012, when I first started soul winning, I remember I went to a nursing home and there was a lady in the nursing home and she was about 82 years old and I came up to her and that was the first thing I said. I said, Hey, ma’am I want to I’m here today. And I just wanna let you know that Jesus loves you and that God has a plan for your lives immediately. 82 years old living in the middle of America, you know, the Bible belt of America, the Bible be of the world and tears start running down her eyes. And she says, no one has ever said to me that Jesus loves me.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:11):
Wow. So it was a revelation for her,

Calvin Hunter (04:14):
Yes. Revelation for her. And I think that we need to know that we think we’re, you know, and I’m talking to the Amer Evangel specifically. Cuz I believe that it’s maybe not. So in people’s minds around the world as much, but in America we need to know there are people around us. They don’t know who Jesus is and they don’t know that he loves them. And to just so that seed is the beginning of every can be the starting point of them having a relationship with Jesus.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:45):
Yeah. You’ve also organized large events getting lots of different churches involved. I remember a couple of years ago you did a great outreach in Spartanburg. Tell me about what God did there.

Calvin Hunter (05:00):
Yeah. And in, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, we ended up gathering over 30 churches together and we had over, we reached over 10,000 people with the gospel, brought together six different evangelistic ministries as part of our team and preached the gospel. And the town’s only about 90,000 people. And we reached over 10,000 people within one week. And what we did was we did men’s men’s conference women’s conference. We did prison ministry. We had youth outreaches. We went to the schools, I had, we had the BMA ex guys do tricks and team extreme breaking bricks and bats. And we preach the gospel in the schools to the different schools that would let us in. And, and then we invited everyone out into a park where we had even more activities, bounce houses food that was given away and preached the gospel throughout the whole day in the park had different. A lot of times I like to work with, I like to bring the churches together. So they’re all showing the unity of the body of Christ. You know, so we had different worship teams there, different rappers and artists and everyone was sharing their testimony and preaching the gospel throughout the whole, the whole main day in, in the event there in sparing part.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:28):
I remember when you were preparing for that, you had come with me on a mission trip down to the nation of Belise, where we did a mass of one day outreach to the entire nation of least 10 different crusades happening all at the same time. And you helped to organize and to set that up and you were so excited because everything we did in Belize, like we did a, a conference for businessmen, you said, oh, I gotta do a conference for businessmen in Spartanburg. And we did something for the young people you’re oh, I gotta do one of those for, for Spartanburg. And then we did a children’s outreach. You’re like, oh, I gotta do a children’s outreach. I gotta have some strength teams. I gotta have some, some extreme sports. And so that’s one of the things I really like about you, every idea that you saw, you immediately thought about how you could put it into practice in reaching people for Jesus. And now you’re doing the events and, and you have several planned coming up over the, the next few months you have bouncy houses, a, a sound system. Tell me about the, the outreaches that you have coming up.

Calvin Hunter (07:30):
Yeah. So coming up, we have over seven churches coming together in Springdale, Arkansas, we’ve rented a rodeo O and so we’re gonna have a big worship night on Friday night, all the churches are coming together, gonna do a big worship night, preach the gospel. And then on Saturday we’re gonna have bounce houses. We’re gonna have team extreme there, the BMX BMX guys there, and we’re gonna, we’re gonna, I’m gonna come a few. I’m I’m actually going down there here April 15th and I’m gonna be taking two people on the streets, teaching them about one-on-one evangelism and going out in the streets and evangelizing with them. And then coming back again, this will be June 1st through the fourth for the main outreach where we’ll go street evangelizing and the Massa crusade as well. And so we’re excited, but you know, to go back with the Belize thing, it is very true.

Calvin Hunter (08:24):
I think a lot of people, and, and I was already going, the Lord had spoken to me about Spartenburg and he had said to go into the city and to do the outreach. And so I was being obedience of the Lord. And then when I got connected and I got to go to Belize, I got to see everything that was going on. And I think that’s where faith has to kick in for the young evangelist, for the person that’s going. You, you’ve got to have the faith. When you see certain things to be like, you know what? I can do this. I can do this. You gotta believe to do the impossible. If you can’t believe to do the impossible, you’ll never try, but you gotta believe. And so you gotta, don’t ever lose the belief that you can shake a city don’t ever lose the belief, you know, as an evangels that you can change a nation, because that was our belief.

Calvin Hunter (09:09):
We went to believes. We said, Hey we can see all the beliefs here, the gospel and how, how many did we reach over a hundred thousand people during that, during that span. And, and I got to travel the whole country during that time, working with you and had my little brother with me, Daniel. And that was just amazing because that’s what it’s all about. It’s all about. And I got to learn a lot, you know, seeing under you learning and Evangel. And I got to take that and apply that in my own crusades and my own outreaches. And I still apply that same, same information I had today. I, you know, the simplicity of the gospel, you do an illustration that I love and you do it again. And again, I’m pretty sure anyone that’s seen you preach has seen it, but you know, you talk about the pastor that got up and he prayed for, for the one soul and he got the one soul and then the other pastor got up and he prayed for a guitar.

Calvin Hunter (10:00):
Well, that pastor got his guitar. Then that pastor and his one soul, they prayed for another soul. And that’s the thing we gotta, we gotta keep praying for the harvest and we gotta keep going and reaching the harvest. And so that is what is on my heart. A book, you know, by Tia Osborn, recently, soul winning. I mean, if anyone’s on here, they gotta get that book, get Daniel King’s books on soul winning and get that book on soul winning. If you’re not a soul winner, get the book, read the book, get fired up for Jesus. Cause it’s all about the kingdom.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:34):
You know, God is a generational God. He’s the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And one of the reasons that you have such a fire for evangelism is you come from a, a rich history of evangelism. Your father, Warren hunter is a good friend. He’s a great evangelist. And even in South Africa, your, your grandfather the preach, the gospel. And, and so talk to me a little bit about what you’ve learned from these previous generations and what you think God wants to do with our generation.

Calvin Hunter (11:06):
Yeah. You know I’ve learned it’s, it’s so amazing because my great grandpa was a missionary in South Africa. My grandpa is even he was diminished here over there, but now he does missionary in the nursing homes in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he has sees miracles in the hospitals all the time. So he’s also a missionary in, in that setting. And then my dad, you know, traveling the world and I would say, you know, I learned, I learned about that. Love. I learned about the thing that I learned from all of them the most is the love of God. Every time they went out and did something, they always did it with the love of God. They never did it angry with people, or they always did it totally in love with Jesus and always saw, they were always full of joy. They just, everywhere that they went, my grandpa, my great grandpa, my dad, everywhere they go.

Calvin Hunter (12:02):
They’re always exuding the love of God to everyone that they’re around. And as I travel with my dad, I would see that he, he exuded the love of God, but you also taught me different things. As, as, as a minister, you always have to maintain a relationship with God. You can never think, oh, I’m doing the work of the ministry and not have that personal relationship with the Lord. So I always, I watched him with my dad specifically, where he would spend time in the word and in prayer every day, if we were overseas, it was, there was always spreading that time in the word and in prayer. And that was the foundation. You know, you’ll you, if you gotta, your time in the word in prayer is valuable. And I think for anyone that’s young in ministry, you need to remember that. Don’t just get caught up in doing the work of ministry, cuz then you’ll burn out and we don’t want you to burn out. We want you to continue to go strong. You know that this year it’ll be 10 years of me being full-time in ministry. I have not worked a secular job ever again in the last 10 years for 10 years, I’ve had the honor and the privilege to travel the world and preach the gospel. And the circumstances are always different. You know, when I was not married, I slept on the floor. I up in cars, you know, whatever, whatever it was

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:16):
Now that you’re married. It’s a little bit tougher to do that. I remember when I got married to my wife, Jessica, suddenly my hotel bills went up because in, in my, my food bills, she wanted to go to nicer restaurants than I ever did by myself. I’d go to McDonald’s. She’s like, let’s go to that nice restaurant over there, but God still provides.

Calvin Hunter (13:35):
Yeah. And many times when you’re traveling by yourself, you know, people will feed one person. But then when you got like 2, 3, 4 other five people with you, there’s no, there’s no feeding in that. You know, but you know exactly God does provide. And that’s one thing that I’ve seen now being with my wife, I, I wish it’d be great to maybe us do a podcast some time, but we’ve come together now in this place of unity where we’re both saying, okay, we’re going to reach the gospel. We’re going no matter what. And that’s another thing I learned from my parents is no matter what the cost, no matter when, no matter where, no matter why we choose to serve God and we choose to be obedient to him. And some people they’re like saying, oh, I want to be, I want to be led by the Lord to go get people saved.

Calvin Hunter (14:20):
I’m waiting for the holy spirit to speak to me or some magic little bell to ding and ring over someone’s head. But it’s like, no, like the word of God is inspired by the holy spirit. He’s spoken. He wrote it down. He’s already spoken to us to go into all the world and preach the gospel he’s already into us. And so that is what I learned from them as well is you’re, you’re, you’re called, you’re called to go. And you, you have the choice. You can answer it or not. And so that’s what I learned from them. When you answer the call, you gotta give your all. Cause if you don’t put your all in the call, you’ll be in trouble. You’ll run shipwreck.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:55):
When you answer the call, you gotta give your all, I like that.

Calvin Hunter (14:58):
That’s right.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:00):
In fact, I’m gonna put that in my, my notes on, on my website, under every podcast, I put notes in a transcript of what people say it’s valuable. And I think that’s one of the most valuable things that you’ve said is when you answer the call, you have to

Calvin Hunter (15:18):
Give your all,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (15:19):
Give your, all, give your all for Jesus. So talk to me about inspiring young people. When you do your outreaches, you get a lot of young people involved and a lot of young people helping do you see God doing among a younger generation

Calvin Hunter (15:36):
Man with the, with the younger generation, they are people that are just waiting to hear. And once they hear they get ignited and they’re, they’re ready, they’re ready to run everyone that I talked to the younger generation, some of them, you know, especially with those that have, that have been in the church before, it’s like, they’re waiting, they’re waiting to connect with someone. They’re waiting to connect with a community or a family. And the second that they get plugged into that family, their potential is unleash because there’s such a, an, an energy to the younger people that once they get it, they become zealous and they’re ready to run with it. You know? And so I see that is if we will go after the younger ones, you will, you will see that the holy spirit will change their life completely. They’ll set them free they’ll and, and you, and they gotta be discipled, but they’ll run with it.

Calvin Hunter (16:37):
They’ll run. They don’t have any, they’re not gonna, they’re not out here trying to figure out all the theological doctrines and everything. But when they get it, they can take the simplicity of the word and run with it, with fire. And I see that, I see the younger people getting the word of God and running with it. They’re running with it. And even now I see young people gathering around me, young families, younger, the younger generation you could say, and, and we’re, we’re like, where do you wanna send us? God? Where do you want us to go? And so that’s what we’re believing. We’re believing like, God, wherever you want us to go, we’ll go. And we’re just out here. We’re just ready to run with the gospel.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:14):
That’s awesome. Because

Calvin Hunter (17:15):
That’s that, that’s everything to us. You know, the world is trying to offer so much. The world has so many different ideas and things that it tries to offer. And we’ve, we’re like, no, that, that stuff has no taste compared to the kingdom of God. It has no taste compared to the things of God, the video games, the TV stuff, the movies, all that stuff that is trying to cloud people. But, but the young people they’re sitting there and they’re not satisfied. The more social media, the Instagram, none of this is satisfying them. The only thing that can satisfy them and bring them true. Liberty and joy is Jesus.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:51):
Amen. That’s

Calvin Hunter (17:52):
We see it when they get Jesus. They’re they’re come. They’re getting they’re coming off. Everything.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:58):
Amen. Yeah. Well, I wanna say thank you, Calvin, for being on the evangelism podcast. If you’re listening and you want to help Calvin hunter to do his AMPED outreaches to the young people of America and to reach entire cities for Jesus all over America then I’d encourage you to support him. Your, your website is sword ministries.org. Is that the best place for people to go to support?

Calvin Hunter (18:30):
That is the best place. Yeah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:31):
Yeah. So SwordMinistries.org go there and, and give a gift helped Calvin hunter to reach people for Jesus. He’s doing an amazing job going out and a reaching the, going after the, the hungry, spiritually, hungry young people of America. It’s so valuable what you’re doing, Calvin.

Calvin Hunter (18:59):
Thank you. Yeah. And you know, we’re believing I was sharing with you too. Like right now we’re believing to purchase a brand new camper, $40,000. My wife and I, cause we were wanna take that camper and go from like Maine to Florida and just go every two weeks to a new city, preaching the gospel. And so, you know, if there’s anyone that’s listening, that’s connected to any of those regions, we would love to help you. Or you’re like, you wanna go out soul winning. We would love to come and tag team together with you. You know, I never was a soul winning there until someone else went out with me, they said, come with me, I’ll show you how a soul win. Next thing I know, 40 people were saved. And so it’s always like that. Sometimes you just need someone to come alongside, you, walk with you. And next thing you know, your life will never be the same again. You’ll be become, you’ll see souls everywhere you go.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:48):
Amen. And that’s what

Calvin Hunter (19:48):
You did with me. I went to Belize with you. Like I came alongside of you. My life has changed. I can never look at evangelism the same way and I can’t do it the same way. I see it in a bigger picture that we can go further than ever before as well.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (20:02):
Amen. Well, I believe that God wants to bring revival to America and it’s going to take ministers and people like you, that will go after the lost go after revival and, and, and get people fired up. And so Calvin you’re doing exactly the, the right thing. You’re you’re right in the middle of God’s heartbeat for people.

Calvin Hunter (20:25):
Amen. Thank you. Yeah. You know, Jesus came as something I shared on Sunday is what did Jesus come to do this seek and save that which was lost. And that is, I feel like that that’s the father’s heartbeat seek and save, seek and save.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (20:42):
Amen.

Calvin Hunter (20:43):
Everyone is called to seek and save and be a part of that.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (20:46):
Amen. Well, let’s finish up the, the podcast with a prayer Calvin for people that have a heart for evangelism. Could you just pray some holy spirit fire for, for anyone who’s listening that wants to be more on fire for sharing their faith with others?

Calvin Hunter (21:04):
Yes, Lord father. I just think you for everyone that is listening, I thank you for everyone that is connected to this podcast. Thank you father. God, they, they would be encouraged. So they would be uplifted father. I thank you, Lord, that you give them a passion for the lost and a hunger for the things of God father. I thank you, Lord, that you would ignite this passion even for a, in their region, that they would see that they don’t have to go overseas to Africa or go to Brazil or Belize the father, God, that they would see that the harvest is right there. Next door to them. The harvest is right there in Walmart. The harvest is all around them that you would open their eyes, that they would see the harvest that just as the Eagle lifts its eyes and looks into the sun and the oil drops over its eyes who can see the fish beneath the water father.

Calvin Hunter (21:53):
I think you Lord that their eyes would be open to see the fish beneath the water. I thank you Lord, that they would have a harvest of souls that Amos 9:13, that and the Plowman would overtake the Reaper that as they go and start sewing seed, they would see a super pre natural harvest of souls. And I thank you Lord, at that, those that are doing this, even now that Lord, you would encourage them that they would not grow weary and well doing, but father God, that they would know that they can continue to go, continue to go give them strength, father, God, give them a greater boldness to preach the word. And thank you, father God that they go, they go anointed. They go full the glory. They go full of the joy of the Lord this day in Jesus name. Amen.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (22:37):
Amen.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:37):
Myanmar

Kevin Stark (02:38):
Myanmar, Yeah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:39):
And we’ve seen God do great fruit from the festival in Myanmar. That was just tremendous. I in fact Myanmar was really wonderful. We were there with my friend do Lao and, and because of that festival in, in Myanmar now there has been lots of ministry that’s happened in the nation of Myanmar and your ministry is helping to facilitate some of that, that ministry there. All right. So let’s talk about team extreme, this ministry that God has given you, first of all, what is team extreme?

Kevin Stark (03:09):
It’s a long story. I’ll give you the short version, but Team Xtreme is an evangelism team. So we preach the gospel everywhere. Anyplace schools rise, stadium events, VBS does any place. There’s an open door and open ears will preach the gospel. And it’s really a, the, the, the main part of it. It’s it’s Jesus, it’s the gospel it’s signs and wonders miracles, but we use athletes and strength feats in other things to on non Christians to an event. So that’s sort of the hook and the draw. And then we have guys that are breaking bricks and bending steel bars. But we also have guys that are, you know, dunking, basketballs, dribbling, soccer balls, all sorts of different things, but it’s you know, sports is sort of that universal language that sort attracts people. So they think they’re coming to see some strong man lift some weights, but we talk about the strongest man of all Jesus. And they come to the Lord in the droves. It’s a, it’s been a great 25, no about 30 years. We’ve been doing it all around the world.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:16):
And so when someone breaks a brick or a steel bar or rips a, a phone book in half or, or curls up a frying pan using their bare hands. Yeah. Each one of those feats of strength have a little object lesson that you use to, to share the gospel. Well, what are some of the object lessons that you teach from those feats of strength? Well,

Kevin Stark (04:37):
The steel bar is we talk about being behind bars of sin and the phone books. We rip phone books in half when we call those the devil’s book of death and your sins are written in the devil’s book, but when God comes, he grabs the book. And when you give your life to him and he rips the book up and throws it away far as from east and in the west the bricks, a lot of times we’ll talk about sin. So each brick will repent different sins. It could be, pornography could be, addictions, could be lies, get to be anger. And then we do a little drama where God’s on one side and man’s on the other side. And man, you know, he is trying to break the wall down, you know, cause we all have walls in our life and, and trying to get rid of the sin through good works or, or whatever. But then when he gives us life to Jesus, Jesus comes in and breaks the wall down and they hug each other. And there’s that show of a, you know, of unity. And so yeah, just, we, a lot of the guys are big, huge, strong guys that love to lift weights. They love to eat, but they love to to battle the devil and see people come to Jesus. Yeah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:45):
And you have team extreme teams that are in nations all over the world. I remember one time I was in the nation of India and I met a man who actually was one of the strongest men in all of India. He had competed in Mr. Universe and in some really big strength competitions. Yeah. And I started talking to him and he is like, yeah. Kevin Stark has been training me how to share the gospel using my strength and this guy could pull cars. Yeah. It was amazing. And so tell me about some of these different countries that you’ve impacted. Yeah.

Kevin Stark (06:18):
You know, we started with one team, we weren’t planning to multiply, but you know, that’s what God does. He multiplies. And a lot of my team members are from different nations and God just sort of brings them in different ways, different means. And then eventually they say, well, I think I want to go start my own team in New Zealand. And we have a team in para way and we have teams in India and Philippines. And so they just sort of stay and train with us for a couple years and then they go start their own evangelism team. And so that’s been the fun thing. I mean, you know, in Ephesians four talks about training other evangelists, just you’re evangelists. That’s like one of your main things is to train other evangelists. So, but it was just sort of organic. It was like, God did it. We got to be really close friends. And then we commissioned them now to, and it’s just a way to multiply, getting evangelism evangelists all over the world. Now

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:07):
I’ve heard you share a, a great testimony of your team in Norway that we’re on a television program. Tell me what happened.

Kevin Stark (07:14):
Oh yeah. It’s just, you know, God is opened up. You knows supernaturally, suddenly doors. We weren’t looking Isaiah 22 says he’ll open up doors that no man could open. And so several of our teams have been on the talent shows. So Norway has talent. It’s their own sort of, sort of like America’s got talent. And so they got invited to that. And our Norway, our team of nor just crazy Vikings, they have long hair. They seem like they just got off the Viking boat. They’re crazy insane. But yeah, they, they did their show and I think they got to the semifinals and they only have about three minutes to put all these different strength feats in there. And so they’re running through two by fours, breaking big, blowing up hot water bottles, band need steel bar, breaking baseball all within three minutes. And it’s just as fast, you know, high energy. And at the end, they all get together in the middle. There’s about five of them. And they’re speaking this broken

Speaker 5 (08:11):
Jesus is Lord over nor Jesus is Lord.

Kevin Stark (08:16):
And this is secular show. It’s going all over the Nordic nations. And then they run up to the judges and they say,

Speaker 5 (08:22):
We want to give you a Bible, read the Bible. Jesus loves

Kevin Stark (08:26):
You. And so this is being show all over the place. And then the judges, you know, they’re not Christians at all. And the one judges go, that’s amazing. That’s not like my Lutheran church growing up. But anyhow, they did really well went to the semi-finals and it was a great open door. They have, they think they have their own TV show that they do now. So, you know, people like things that are extreme different, but then you just, it opens up their heart cuz to hear the gospel. So that’s a beautiful thing, thing about it.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:57):
And your ministry is connected with YWAM. And for many years you worked with Mark Anderson who actually wrote a great book on crusade evangelism. I reviewed his book as part of my doctor to ministry at U and into it and, and his defense of, of why crusade evangelism sure can be effective. And, and so tell me like some of the things that you did with Mark Anderson and, and his ministry over the years,

Kevin Stark (09:26):
You know, mark launched this whole thing called impact world tour. It was his vision to fulfill the great commissioner, being a part of fulfilling a great commission. And he just had this idea to use three different teams. One is team extreme international. One is a group called GX international and they’re hip hop dancers and, and, and skateboarders and, and rap artists. The other one’s called island Breezer Polynesian dancers. So it fits and reaches different demographics, you know, and I think one of the key key things with evangelism is reaching felt needs, you know, so young kids have felt needs, you know, we would fill stadiums all the time because they wanted to see some people that were doing hiphop dance or spoken word or skate or, you know, but they would never step in a church, you know? So mark started to organize these things, big visionary, very Apostol.

Kevin Stark (10:17):
We probably went to over 70 nations, over 3,400 cities in the last 30 years. And our citywide campaigns are not just one, one event. So it takes him six months to two years to set the event up. So he brings all the church together. He organizes the cities, they book all the venues, they raise all the budgets. So I mean, as an evangelist and I’ve talked to other evangelists, like we didn’t have to ever raise the dime of budget. He set up all of these, you know, events in over 3000, 400 cities over, you know, 30 year span. And we just got to go do the things we love to do to preach the gospel. So it’s like, I just took it for granted at that time. But now we’re not really doing a lot of stuff with mark and we’re raising our own budgets and, you know, grinding it out for finances and stuff. But yeah, it,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:08):
That’s a great way to do it. If you can find someone to raise the budget for you.

Kevin Stark (11:11):
Oh, it’s, it was amazing. But you know, gosh, from the very first alter call, you’re doing stuff today. It’s still, I still weep. I still, it still breaks my heart. It’s like you know, I know mostly Evangel watch this show and it’s the thing we live for. It’s the thing God created us to do. So you never grow tired of it. I mean, I turn 66 tomorrow and I still travel and preaching the gospel, telling people about Jesus. Amen.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:37):
Yeah. You are a, a very experienced evangelist. I described you to my friend pair office as a, as a battle scar general, you have been through a lot of battles and, and you have done a lot of evangelism and now God is raising up a new generation of young evangelists is really exciting to see what’s happening. And, and so what’s some of the advice that you would give to a young evangelist or someone who has a heart and passion for evangelism. Yeah. What would you say to them?

Kevin Stark (12:07):
I mean, it all goes down to the word of God to great commandments. Love, God, love people. I mean, you gotta go a basic, I used to be an Olympic coach for a number of years in a division one football coach. And it goes back to the fundamentals. You do the fundamentals, right? You stay humble, stay faithful, be obedient to the next thing God wants you to do, you know, and, and be faithful. And it’s all those basic things, you know, it’s just like, sure. Some of them, some people are gonna see more miracles than others. Some are gonna see more salvations, but it’s really just loving God. And that means spending time in the world, spending time in worship, you know, our team would you know, be in locker rooms before a show and just crying out for the presence of God, crying out for souls, weeping for people.

Kevin Stark (12:53):
And anytime we could get into the presence into the glory, into where we would get filled up, that would be the passion into the word. So it’s just like you can get so busy that you forget the basics and you know, you know, it’s the, the things that, you know, like great evangelists, like bill Graham, don’t touch God’s glory, God’s gold, God’s girl girls, you know, it’s like those basic things. But I think if you’re, you’re in fellowship with Jesus, you’re in his presence daily, it keeps you from falling in those pits, you know? So in the word, in his presence and just loving God and loving people, having other people around you to keep you accountable, you know, that you can say to them, if you see something that’s wrong in my life, I want you to run to me and tell me exactly what it is, having those people around you and not just having yes.

Kevin Stark (13:46):
People around you. And you know, also listen to wise council you know, at the early days, I’d go to every revive I could got prayed over by every great evangelist I could impartation. And that’s really good too. And just listen to the people that had gone before you, you know, get a chance. I know you sat down several times with TL, Osborne and others, just sit down and ask some questions and be willing to be humble and just sit there and listen, you know, I think pride to is another thing that takes out a lot of evangelists. You know, you start to get a little bit of success. So success and failure are both things that can crash you, you know, so sometimes you start to get a little success or see, see a few good miracles and you start to think you’re all that and more, but we’re just all still, we’re humble servants of Jesus, you know, seeing that place of humility and obedience and you you’ll run the race and you’ll finish it. Well,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:39):
Let’s talk about what’s happened this week. We are here in Ethiopia, we’ve just finished a great crusade in ambo Ethiopia you partnered with us and, and together we partnered with Joshua campaign here in Ethiopia. And the crusade started with just a few thousand, but by the end we had thousands and thousands of people on the field. What were some of your impressions? What, what, what did you you think about the ministry that happened this week?

Kevin Stark (15:08):
I mean, some some of it’s just that I unit, he always demands a blessing. So with you and, and you know, just Joshua campaigns and I think as we come together, just that just pleases God, and then just having the pastors there and serving them and serving their vision. I mean, I think that’s the one thing that, you know, evangels need to, to work on. And, you know, you might be the one who gets to preach, you know, every event, the whole thing. But I think when you do the unity thing, you know, that brings the glory of God at a new level. And then just the passion of the African people, just like, I think they just get, I think the people in charge in heaven are gonna be Africans. You know, they just, they just love to worship man.

Kevin Stark (15:50):
And so just sit there watching you just enjoy them, jump up and down in the cloud of dust, you know, fill the air. And, you know, you look at ’em, they got dust all over their face and you just see their eyes out of the dust. And, and then all of a sudden, just incredible miracles. You know, one of the things where you preached one night and you just ask, you got on your knees and it’s just a simple message of the gospel and you ask everybody else to get on their knees. So most of the people are in the dirt, you know, on their faces, on their knees, just crying out for salvation. I mean, that just really wrecked me, really touched my heart to see. I mean, there was, I don’t know the exact number, but there was over several thousand people. Everybody kneeling, everybody asking for forgiveness, everybody crying out for God. So so, so good. Such a great three or four days. And even though they lost my luggage and I had one pair of pants and one shirt, I was still praising Jesus, but I got clean clothes on my own luggage. Oh, I’m so happy.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:51):
That is a Acker Fe to only have one pair of underwear for a whole week, but thank God you made it.

Kevin Stark (16:57):
We made it it’s. But anyhow, I just, it’s one of those little things, the honor privilege to be an evangelist. You know, I got, I know I have two circles of my life. It took me a where to a while to get there, but preaching the gospel, being an evangelist and training another people how to do evangelism. So pretty simple. I mean, I have my family, I, my relationship with Jesus, but my calling around those two circles and I try not to go very much outside those two realms. So yeah. What an honor to preach the gospel. Huh.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:26):
Now I know that your, your ministry has recently launched television program where you’re sharing the gospel in, in different places. And, and if someone’s listening, they wanna maybe watch some of the episodes of your television program or find out more about team extreme and more about your ministry. Maybe even support you, help you do crusade preaching

Kevin Stark (17:46):
From the good job.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:48):
How can they find out more about you? What, what’s your website?

Kevin Stark (17:50):
Yeah, it’s said team extreme. I NTL, but it’s T E a M no, E X, T R E M. So T E a M X T R E M a. I ntl.com. That’s our webpage. So you can get all the information there. The TV show is you can go to YouTube and you can go to team extreme or sorry, impact all nations. And you could get, we have about 40 episodes that are on there and you can watch any of them there. So it’s through also through the now TV network. And you can find that information on our on our web page or Facebook page impact all nations. We’ve got a Facebook page that can, and get more information, how to watch the show weekly, it’s a satellite show.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:34):
Let’s finish by talking about what God will do in the future. It seems like God is doing something new in the earth today. What, what type of sense do you have prophetically of what we’re going to see in the area of evangelism and missions over the next few years? Yeah.

Kevin Stark (18:56):
Yeah, I, I’m so excited about it. I just see an army of young evangelists being raised up. And, you know, I think in a lot of people know this, but the season of big name evangelism, I think it’s still air, but there’s no way that the big names can complete the great commission. So I just see an army of hundreds and hundreds of thousands of on fire totally sold out totally in love with God compassionate in all the different spheres of society preaching the gospel. And, you know, and one time I got home quick story from a crusade and we lived in a, in a house. It was sort of on a farm, but behind my house was a, a wheat field and it just happened to be, I got, I got home and I walked in my backyard and it was harvest time.

Kevin Stark (19:46):
So, you know, only takes some of a few hours to harvest the, the wheat behind our house. And the big John Deere green John Deere tractor was just whacking the weed and, and dust was in the air. It’s like that kind of stuff excites me. And so I’m just looking and the guy, I don’t know who he was, but he had the, he stopped his tractor and he looked at me and he sort of waved at me. He said, come on. So I went and jumped in the John Deere tractor and we’re riding. It was very modern. You had a stereo in there and all these, you know, different stuff in there. And the Lord, the Lord just said, me, the great harvest is coming the billion. So harvest is coming. I just hear him so clear. I’m just sitting in this John Deere tractor with this guy with overalls on, and it was one of those divine moments.

Kevin Stark (20:28):
And, you know, that’s what I’m living for. That’s what I’m believing for. We’re a worldwide supernatural revival. You know, my heart is to we’ve had great meetings, great salvations, but I wanna see, you know, a real transformation of nations. Do you see real revivals? And I they’re coming. I believe it there’s so many prophetic words where just people are getting saved. People are walking outta bars and people are getting healed outta prisons, and people are getting saved all over the streets. And it’s just not an event. It’s so huge that it’s touching every corner of a city and every a quarter of a nation. So the great harvest is coming. Hallelujah.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (21:11):
Amen. Well, Kevin, you’re a good friend. I have such tremendous respect for you. And I’m so thankful for this opportunity to, to work together once more, thank you for being on the evangelism podcast.

It’s a new year and it’s time for new vision. Do you have a vision for your life? What are you aiming for in your ministry? What are you aiming for in your relationships? What do you wanna accomplish in life? Where do you want to be in five years today, we’re going to talk about the importance of vision in your ministry.

Evangelism Podcast Host (00:25):
Jesus said, go into all the world and preach the gospel. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be say, welcome to the evangelism podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews, full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies, and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary and evangelist Danielle King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:00):
Welcome. Welcome to the evangelism podcast. I’m Daniel King and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus today. We are talking about vision and I am joined by my brand new co-host and fellow evangelist, Daniel Patterson, Daniel, thank you for joining us today. Thank you for having me on. And we are going to be talking about vision. It is right at the beginning of a new year, 2022. And at the beginning of a new year is a good time to stop and to kind of start to think about what God has for you in the new year. A lot of people set new year’s solutions, and I, I think that the biblical form of new year’s resolutions is vision setting a vision for your life. So, so Daniel, if you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time. So if you aim at nothing in life, you’re gonna hit nothing. But if you aim at a specific target, God will help you to hit the target. And so there’s a verse in Habakkuk two verse two that talks about the importance of vision. Could you read for us that verse in, in, in let’s find out what God’s word says about setting vision? Yeah, so

Daniel Patterson (02:21):
It says in a Habakkuk 2:2 this then the Lord replied, write down the revelation or vision and make it plain on tablets so that a Herald may run with it

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:34):
And keep reading

Daniel Patterson (02:35):
For the revelation of awaits an important time. It speaks of the end and will not prove false though. It linger, wait for it. It will certain come and will not delay.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:46):
So it says to write the vision and make it plain, write the vision and make it plain that he who reads it may run with it. So, Daniel, talk to me a little bit. Why do you think it’s important to write down a vision?

Daniel Patterson (03:04):
So I graduated from victory Bible college just in this last spring. And one of the things they taught us and told us was that if you just think about it, then the likely chance that you do is very, very, but if you actually write it down, you actually remember, and the chances of you actually doing it are much higher. So whenever you write it down and it actually goes into your heart and you think about it a lot more compared to just thinking

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:31):
About it. So there’s actually a lot of power in, in writing it down. You know, I want you imagine in Archer, who’s shooting his, his bow. And so if he aims right at the center of his target, he can judge his success and failure, depending on how close he gets to the middle of the target. But just imagine if he aims his arrow at nothing in particular, you know, the arrow might hit a tree, it might hit a house. It might hit a, a passer by. And so some people, they, they shoot an arrow and then wherever it falls, they go and they just draw a circle around the area and see, see, look, I hit the middle of the target, but if you have a specific target in mind that you’ve written down and you aim your arrow at the target, then it allows you to lift your bow down side to side, to move it so that you can actually hit the target that you’re aiming at.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (04:27):
And the process of writing it down is setting the target. What area are you aiming your life at? And so in my life, the area that I’m aiming my life is to winning people to Jesus. I am called to be an evangelist. And so I set a goal when I was 15 years old, that I wanted to lead a million people to Jesus before I turned 30 years of age. And that goal became kind of the, the defining vision, the target for my life and every decision I made, I judged against that specific goal of leading a million people to Jesus. And, and so some opportunities came to me that helped me to achieve that goal. But then other opportunities came that would have distracted me. They, there were not necessarily bad things to do, but they wouldn’t helped me achieve that goal. And, and so just making that decision and writing it down, I wanna lead a million people to Jesus. Before I turn 30 years of age, it helped me to judge my success and help me to make the decisions that I had in life. And so in Proverbs chapter 29, verse eight 18, it says without a vision, the people per what, what do you think that verse means? Daniel?

Daniel Patterson (05:48):
So basically when you look at, you know, all, all the kingdoms and, and famous governments throughout history, where there was America, they had a vision to have a, a free Republic that the people had rights in. And they actually wrote the vision down in the 10 commandments. And because of it, it led to what we have today, a free democracy. And, and so whenever you have that vision, it helps lead to freedom for the people and it impacting other people. But whenever you don’t have a vision, it’s hard to, to build off anything. You don’t have a foundation when you don’t have a vision.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:20):
So if you’re listening to me today, I want you to begin to think about what God’s vision is for your life. You might even wanna pull out a piece of paper right now and begin to write down some of the, the visions that God has given for you. You know, putting a vision down on paper, earns it from a dream into a specific goal. And once you have that goal, it’s something that you can begin to aim towards and, and achieve in your life. Vision is God’s plan for your life. God gave you vision. So you wouldn’t have to live by only what you see. The Bible says that faith is the sub of things you hope to accomplish the evidence of things that you cannot see, even when other people maybe can’t see them. And you begin to write down your vision. You can see something in faith by faith.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:11):
You can see something using your faith even before other people can see it. And so vision is not the same sight. You know, sight is a function of the eyes, but vision is a function of the heart sight is the ability to see things as they are. Vision is the ability to see things as they could be. You know, Helen Keller, she was really famous. She was both deaf and blind, but she learned to communicate using sign language, but tactile sign language. She had communicate by touching people’s hands. And she was once asked, can you imagine something even worse than being born blind? And she said, the only thing worse than being born blind is being able to see and having no vision for your life. And so vision is seeing the future before it comes into being vision is a mental picture of your destiny.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:05):
Vision is the key to your future. And, and so we think about people in life that have great visions. Like for example Steve jobs, he was the one who invented the, the apple iPhone, and he had a vision or the iPhone before anyone else could see it. And he thought, I wonder if we could put a communication device together that would make phone calls that would allow you to listen to songs, and that could access the internet and put all those devices down into one device that would fit into a person’s pocket. And he managed to do it. He had a vision for an iPhone, and because of his vision, he got rich because everyone suddenly, when he, his vision came to fruition, they said, that’s some, that’s a gadget that I have to have. And, and so the same is true in ministry that your vision will create the future. It will create something that doesn’t exist. No one else can see it, but you can see it in your spirit. God gives us vision. And then by faith, we can be in working towards it. And what is on the inside can manifest in reality and, and everyone can see it. Daniel, what are some of the things that God has put in your heart that you would like to see God do in the future, in your life?

Daniel Patterson (09:30):
So one of the, one of the things that I know God’s called me as an evangelist, he is called me to preach a gospel to the nations. And I know that because he revealed it to me at 16 years of age. And, and because he’s revealed that to me, I’ve I, I’ve made a dream board putting pictures of crusades and stuff along those lines. And tell me,

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:52):
Let’s stop there from a, tell me what is a dream board, what what’s a dream board. So

Daniel Patterson (09:57):
So I guess the Christian version of a dream board, cuz you’re gonna have a regular dream board. So it’s putting out through pictures and vision and in other things putting on a piece of paper or a board of what God’s called you to do. So if God’s called you to say, to be a youth, pastor you to pictures of maybe going on campuses and pictures of reaching kids in the church. But for me as an evangelist I’m putting pictures of pictures of crusades. So a dream board is putting into picture form of what God’s called you to do.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:34):
So you’re, you’re cutting out pictures of what it is. It’s basically creating a vision for your life. You’re, you’re putting that picture in front of you in whatever is your dominant focus is what will manifest into reality in your life. And, and so tell what did you put on your dream board that told you about your, your calling as an evangelist pictures? Did you put on there?

Daniel Patterson (10:58):
So there was a picture of Billy Graham who who’s my favorite Evangel. So

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:02):
Billy Graham, great Evangel. Yeah. You, you cut out a picture, Billy Graham

Daniel Patterson (11:05):
He’s preaching in a Soule, South Korea. Okay. And he’s preaching to a million people.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:10):
So I’ve seen that picture. Yeah. It’s a huge crowd of people. So here, Billy Graham is preaching to a, a million people. What did that vision begin to do in your life?

Daniel Patterson (11:22):
So it inspires me to to reach towards that goal of being an evangelist. And it gives me hope, cuz obviously right now I’m not preaching to a million people, but whenever I, I, I look at it it gives me hope knowing that and believing that one day it’s gonna happen. So it gives me hope. And inspiration.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:41):
Do you think that there will come a time where you will have the opportunity to preach to a million people?

Daniel Patterson (11:45):
Yes. In Jesus name <laugh>.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (11:47):
I mean, that would be amazing, wouldn’t it? And, and to preach to a million people and see a million people get saved at and one time, you know, there’s, there’s a famous story about Reinhardt bonky. Kenneth Copeland found Reinhardt bonky when he was just in the beginning stages of his ministry. At that time, he was, he was doing crusades, but his biggest crusade was only in the, the 10 to 30,000 people range, which is for Reinhard was still a very small crusade. And Kenneth Copeland prophesied over Reinhard and said, the day will come where you will lead a million people to Jesus in a single prayer. And at that time to go from 30,000 in a crowd to a million, it seems impossible, but that prophecy can came to pass. And the day came at one of the big crusades in Legos, Nigeria, that Reinhard bonky actually led a million people to Jesus in a single prayer.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:44):
And it came because of that prophecy, but really what a prophecy is, is it’s, it’s presenting a vision of the future of what God wants to, to do in the future. So vision is unique to our species. Only humans can enter the world of the imagination and create a future. This is the reason why humans have advanced over the centuries while animals live the same lives year after year animals, only what they can sense. You know, a dog, he, he can taste, he can touch, he can feel. But the unique ability that humans have is this ability to create vision in their, their mind. And then to begin to work towards that vision, we can actually dream beyond reality. We can work towards an invisible goal. We can harness the power of creative work creative vision and envision actually motivates us to work.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (13:43):
Really vision is, is the only motivation that we have for work. Why, why go to work well is because maybe you have a vision for earning money to buy a new car, or, or maybe you have a vision to, to get me married someday. You know that in order to get married, you’re gonna have to have some money in the bank. And, and, and so vision thinking about your future is what gives us the motivation to, to work hard. Vision is what motivates me in ministry to, to work hard, to, to lead people, to Jews, cuz I have a vision of thousands and even millions of people being in heaven with me. I don’t want them to go to hell. I have a vision of them joining with me in heaven. I have a vision of me being in heaven and people coming up and saying, thank you for helping to lead me to Jesus, thank you because of you I’m here.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (14:29):
And so that vision gives me kind of the motivation to keep going. When, when things get tough and there are two types of vision that you can have for your life, there is a positive vision and there’s a negative vision. And your motivation for working is going to be grounded either in faith or in fear. So faith builds. Faith is a positive vision for your life. But fear think about it. Fear is actually a negative vision that Satan comes to try to give you for your life. And, and so Satan is the original terrorist. He uses terror and fear to try to influence people. So Satan has given people a vision in their life concerning COVID right now, what Satan’s vision it’s you’re gonna get sick. You’re going to die. And because of that fear, everyone in society has been so of COVID. But Jesus gives us a positive vision for our life. Jesus says, I give you healing. I give you health. I give you prosperity. And, and so he gives us faith. Talk to me a little bit, Daniel, about the difference between faith and fear. What do you think is the difference between faith and year?

Daniel Patterson (15:52):
Yeah, so we have a choice whenever as Christians, whenever we’re stepping into what God’s calls us to do, we can choose to have faith and believe what, what God’s called us to, or we can choose to believe in the fear. And so really we have a choice to believe in one of two options. And for me person leave, you might as well choose faith and believe and step out cuz either way, you’re gonna have to believe. And whenever you choose fear, you’re choosing to walk away from what God’s called you to do. You know, you can be saved, you can know Jesus and be on your way to heaven, but it says an Ephesians, you 10, that he, for us, what he called us to do before we were born. And so we have a choice to walk out the vision for our life or not. So faith

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (16:42):
Is believing that something good is going to happen to us if we do what’s right. So this is a positive vision of the future. And it’s very healthy to be motivated by faith, but fear, the opposite fear is the belief that something bad will happen to us. If we don’t do what’s right, and fear is binding and it’s it’s blinding. It actually causes us to, to do things out of, of obligation. And envision is so powerful. Like vision is the secret weapon of advertisers. Think about every advertisement. They don’t just show you the picture of a car. They show you the picture of you in a car with a beautiful girl driving fast down the road. They’re they’re trying to sell a vision of what your life could be like. If you buy a particular car in every advertiser, D does this, they try to, to show your young, successful, happy, sexy, and the advertiser wants you to see they.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (17:44):
They want you to see yourself using their product in order to, to be happy. And so they, they create a vision of what your life could be like with that product. And I think the same is, is true of God. God gives us a vision of what we could become with his help. And then as we begin to walk in that vision, then we begin to see it happen in our lives. And so there’s something called the law of dominant focus. Whatever you focus on is what’s going to develop in your life. Nowadays we have digital cameras, but in, in the old days, you know, they would take a picture and then you would develop the picture. It would be a, a negative. And, and then you would take the, the negatives and you’d develop it into a picture. And, and so if you take a picture of something, it, it can be a picture of a dog.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (18:42):
It can be a picture of a cat or a picture of a fish. Whatever you’re taking the picture of is what’s going to develop you when you take it. And so what you focus on in life is what will develop in your life. And so if you can’t see your future, you really don’t have a future. Vision is the power to change who you are and the power to change, where you’re going. Every great achievement in life actually began with a vision. And so my prayer is for you, who’s listening is that God would give you a great vision for your life in this coming year. What is your vision for your life? What is it that God is calling you to do in this new year? What, what goals, what resolutions are you going to set for this new year? What is 2022 going to bring in your life?

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (19:36):
You know, what type of, of legacy do you want to create in your life? What, what do you want to be one year from now? What are some of the things that you want to, to see develop in, in your life? Just yesterday my wife and I sat down and started talking about some of our vision for our, our lives in this new year. And we broke it down into several different categories, the categories of faith, what goals do we wanna set for our lives in the area of faith? And one of the goals that we have is we wanna read the Bible. I want to be reading Bible stories to my kids every night before they go to bed. My wife said that she wants to spend more time worshiping. And then we’ve had a lot of stress and worry lately. And so one of my wife’s goals was she wants to shake off the cares of this world in this new year and, and to, to N not worry to, to live stress free. And so those are some of our, our goals in the area of faith, Daniel, what are some faith goals that you have for yourself in this coming year?

Daniel Patterson (20:42):
So one of them is the biggest thing is having a daily relationship with the Lord. So I wanna read the entire Bible this year. So I have a Bob reading plan, which breaks it down every single day. So I’m able to read it by the entire Bible by the end of the year. Another goal is just as I’m, as I’m here, is being prepared as an evangelist to, to go out and preach to the nations and, and being able to do behind the scenes stuff like websites and photography and fundraising and things like that. Another goal that I have this year is I wanna be able to either co co-partner with another evangelist or, or do a crusade for myself for the first time and, and bring people into the kingdom of God.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (21:30):
All right. So then another area to set goals is family. We got faith, family, finances, friendship, fitness, fun, and then ministry. So family in, in our family, like one of the things we want is both of our kids to do daily piano practice. So that’s one of our family goals is that every single day that they would do piano practice and then that our kids would complete their chores and their homework every day that that’s a challenge sometimes as parents to get them to do that. And, and then in order to make that happen, we realize we need to have less screen time and we need to have more family time. And so we set a goal to, to have more walk games, bike rides, and, and outings as a family. So to take the kids away from the screen time and, and get them doing different activities.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (22:19):
And then finances we have some, some financial goals. And so you might wanna think about what are your financial goals for this year? What is it that, that you wanna do to you want to get out of debt? Do, do you want to make more money? Do you want to invest more money? And so some financial goals can help you make decisions for your life. Also friendship. What areas do you want to develop in as a friend fitness? What are some of your fitness goals? Well, Michael, I need to lose some weight. And so I’ve got that as a goal, very popular, new year’s resolution exercise more. Do you have any fitness goals? I

Daniel Patterson (22:56):
Tried to work out a few times a week, about four or five times a week, every morning.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (23:00):
That’s great. And then fun. My wife and I decide we should do at least one date every week. And so every Friday we’re gonna set aside time for us to have a and, and then ministry. We’ve got a variety of ministry goals. I’ve got a crusade coming up in Ethiopia and Zambia, and then we’re working on putting more crusades on the calendar. The goal is to do six to eight crusades every single year. So God gives us these visions for our life. And then we begin to work to, to implement them and to take steps towards completing the vision. And so right now, I want to pray for you and pray for the vision that God has given you for your life. I I’d encourage you find a sheet of paper, begin to write down some of your vision, some of your goals, some of the things that God has for you in your life.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (23:53):
And, and then let me just pray for you, dear heavenly father, I pray for my friend. I pray that you would give them a great vision for their life. I pray that you give ’em a great vision for this coming year of what this year could become. And Lord, I pray, my friend would be focused on the faith side of vision, not the fear side of vision that they would respond to God’s vision for their life, not the devil’s vision for their life. We know that the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus comes to give you life and life more abundantly. Lord, I pray that this coming year would be in amazing year in Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Thanks so much for listening to the evangelism podcast today, our ministry is supported by people like you, who help us go to the nations to preach the gospel.

Evangelism Podcast Host (00:23):
Jesus said go into all the world and preach the gospel. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be Welcome to the evangelism podcast with Dr. Daniel King we’re Daniel interviews, full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host, missionary and evangelist Daniel King.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:59):
Welcome to the evangelism podcast. I’m Daniel King and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus today. I have a special guest with me, Reverend Mark Young. Thank you so much for joining me today.

Mark Young (01:12):
Thank you. Thank you for having me. And it is so, so much of a blessing. I’m just as excited as you cause I love to tell people about Jesus.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:19):
That’s awesome. You have a strong evangelistic calling on your life. Could you tell me, how did you become an evangelist?

Mark Young (01:29):
Tell you I was not anticipating to becoming an evangelist. I had a heart to put on a Christian concert because I love music. I love engineering music and I came to the Portland Fest in 2007 with the Louis Palau, trying to find out how to put on this concert. And when I left, I had no information about a concert, but I had everything about leading a person to Christ. So that’s when I started to see the calling of my life about leading people to the Lord and a strong relationship with the holy spirit.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:55):
And now you have really gotten involved with missions and you’re working on putting together a base in Zambia. Can you tell me about that?

Mark Young (02:05):
One of our hubs, one of the things was me and my wife said, as we love to share the gospel, we love to tell people about Jesus. We see the salvation and we see the of folks just really give their life to Christ. But then we leave little places like Zambia and Uganda, but those people were still not unemployed. And I look at the disciples and I like he had to call Peter from fishing. So our heart was how do we become a tangible beyond just giving them the gospel. So really we’re trying to build what we call a discipleship community, which is like the Nehemiah movement, not only building a wall, but building the hearts of the people.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:40):
That’s awesome. We’re here in the nation of Malawi with a love Malawi festival, with the group of evangelists. That’s under Louis Palau’s ministry. It’s called the global network of evangelists, the GNE. And tell me kind of what you have learned from being a part of this network of evangelists.

Mark Young (03:05):
As you speak of Luis, that was my Papa Honda. We know he’s gone home to me with the lawyer, but one thing that drew us to what he and his calling and his whole ministry was about was we can do more together. And unity is like the DNA of Massey. And what we say is unity does not mean looking the same, but it means everybody bringing their gifts to the table to impact the kingdom. And so that whole thing and allowing us to see what collaboration looked like, and then be a part of it is like a blessing for us.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:36):
What have you been doing in the United States to activate people for evangelism?

Mark Young (03:41):
Well, first of all, we, like I said, we are advantages, but it has missions attached. And we we do a couple of things. We do the city Fest, which is a crusade or festival model, but then we also do something called Massey meals where we serve the home is right on the side of the road on China and tablecloths. And my wife cooks a beautiful meal, but one of the things is we get people to sit to the table, to have a meal with the homeless people. And when we have that meal, the meal with the homeless people, we asked three questions. The first question is, tell us your story. We want to listen to you first. Then the next question is, where’s your walk with Christ that allows people to the homeless to tell their, you know, tell their story, whether they’re in church or whether they’re not in church, but we always say, the Lord will never leave you for safety.

Mark Young (04:26):
So it gives us a chance to share the gospel. And then the third one is how do we help you get you off the street? And what we do is we work with about four or five different churches. One helps them get birth certificates and social security cards that driver’s license. They also get like medical prescriptions with a prescription card, get showers. Then I would search, help some get food. And then there’s other churches that helps them get temporary housing. And all of these churches are different denominations because I know one church can not in homeless. So literally our whole team of massive ministry, we belong to different churches, but we come together as one evangelism group to actually exemplify what UNT looks like in the body of Christ.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:05):
Now, as I’ve heard you speak here several times in Malawi, one of the things that you, you tell them, and you sound very proud of it. When you, you say it, you always say that you are African American. And so you have blood here in Africa, but you live in America. And I actually preach it. A lot of African-American churches across the United States, love preaches, always exciting and fun because sometimes they get the Oregon go in and everyone shouts. They talk back to you. Sometimes other churches, other denominations, you know, are very quiet and informal when they listen to me, but African-American churches are fun to preach it. But what I’ve noticed is that in some of these African-American churches, there’s not very many people that are involved in missionary work or missions. What do you think we can do in the United States to get more African-Americans involved in the mission field?

Mark Young (06:01):
One of the biggest things is they have to even understand that what missions is the name of our ministers missionaries and service of y’all way, because I came out of the AME African American Methodist Episcopal church. And my father was a pastor and I never knew what missionary left the church. I knew we gave up a little offering on a tithing envelope, but it wasn’t until I joined a nondenominational church that I noticed people left the church. So the African-American community is not really even educated on missionaries. So one of the things we need to do is first educate them. And then second to her, there’s a large community of African-Americans even in the Christian area, fear Africa. And as we say is when we were coming here, you know, people was like, well, do they have electricity? And are they living against the elephants in the lions?

Mark Young (06:48):
Or do they have cars or are you going to be sleeping in huts? And a lot of African-Americans have a fear to even come to Africa. So one of the things is education and then to build the bridge back you have, we were in Uganda and 20, 20, 20, 21. And the young girl X, my wife’s like, are you from Nigeria? And my wife, she was 11 years old. We were in Islams and my wife goes, no, I’m from America. She goes, what’s your black, this 11 year old has never seen an African-American that was black or American that was black. So building a bridge back, both sides, learn to know that they’re welcome here to do it. And then also let the Africans know that we are, we are there as well.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:31):
I think the African-American church has a lot to offer churches here, especially in Africa. Like I work with different communities, different ethnic groups and in different areas. And so, for example, in Tulsa, we have a large Burmese community. We have 15,000 Burmese refugees that have come and settled in Tulsa. And so I go preach at their churches and I challenged them and say, here you have a good job. You have a nice car. You’ve been able to buy a nice house. It’s time for you to send some offerings back to the churches in Burma and help reach people for Jesus in that nation that you came from. And I think it’s time for the African-American church in America to, to rise up and in send money, resources come. Because Africa is wide open for the gospel…

Mark Young (08:23):
I totally agree. And that’s what Massey is trying to create that bridge to bring more of our African-American churches African-American youth. Sometimes we say African-American youth don’t know how blessed they are, you know to see how blessed they are to bring him, bring them there. And that’s a part of that Nehemiah movement is yes. We’re trying to build the hearts and build the people hearts back to Jesus here in Africa. But we also want to bring young folks here and African-American churches to see what God is doing in the country, where your ancestors came from.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:55):
Amen. If someone wants to get connected with your ministry, find out more about

Mark Young (09:00):
You, maybe even come with you on a missions trip, what’s your website. How can they find out more about, you can check us out, connect with us on www.masyministries.org. Or you can connect with us on Facebook, which is evangelist, Mark Young or Instagram MASY unite.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:25):
Now another neat thing is that you brought your wife on the strip and you told me that you never go anywhere without her. What is some of the benefits of serving God with a wife who comes and supports the missions work that you’re called to?

Mark Young (09:42):
Well, one of the biggest things, and I actually have released the book this year and it’s called, don’t try to save the world and lose your home. The thing about my father when I was 14, he died in a pulpit as a pastor on a Sunday, but the Sunday that he died Monday, he was going to divorce my mom. And not only he was a senior pastor, but at one time in the season, he was the mayor of the city, as well as a mortician with his own funeral home. And I say he was saving the world, but he was losing his home. So the fact that my wife always say, she’s my sweetheart. And when I’m not with those I’m sugar-free, but she’s just as much of an evangelist of IO and being co-laboring not leaving her behind or not having her were, were empty nest, empty nesters. And we can go and share what it looks like for a husband and wife to do ministry together and what it looks like for a woman of God to stand up and be just as powerful as a man of God.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (10:35):
Tell me more about this hub that you’re building in Zambia, you’ve acquired 15 acres. What do you plan to do with that?

Mark Young (10:44):
Yeah, so we’ve purchased 15 and a half acres outside of Lusaka Zambia, and what we call this, the Nehemiah movement. And the reason we say that God said, it’s not a project, a project starts and finished, but this movement was started to carry on. And what we want to do is first start off with this five phases, four phases, I’m sorry. First phase is a fish farm and garden where we’ll be able to offset some of the ministry by being able to sell those products and also supply products to the actual community. And then phase two will be a mission home where we can bring missionaries over a school where we will have a curriculum. We will have culinary arts discipleship, English as a second language and computer technology. And then also a, a conference center that we will use for weddings and conferences, but also a church service area.

Mark Young (11:32):
But that also would have a commercial kitchen where we can teach culinary arts. So that’s phase it also with the smokehouse, there’ll be a smokehouse where we can smoke food. So that’s phase two and phase three is a medical clinic because in that area, it’s about 50,000 people in this village. And the clinic is probably like 20 by 20 and that’s just a triage area. And then we wants to do an orphanage where we will have parents living with 40 girls and 40 boys where they’ll feel like it’s a home, not just a center where they’re being processed and in a sanctuary. And so we’re planning to have this done by 2026. And we’re asking God to allow us to not to only do it in Zambia, but to do it wherever we can allow us to be. We’ve all. So have had a pastor out of Atlanta, Georgia who’s in stone mountain, who is from Sierra Leone and has been following us. And he said, if we get this done in Zambia, he will give us land and see every Leon. So we’re asking people one to just pray with us on that and consider a partner with us that we can see God work through the Nehemiah movement.

Evangelism Coach Daniel King (12:34):
Amen. Well, if you’re listening and you’re inspired to be a part of what Masy Ministries is doing, I encourage you to go and check out their website and find out more information about them, brother, mark. It’s such an honor to serve God with you. I’ve been so impressed with you this week and the gift of God that’s on your life. Just the anointing that you operate in when you, when you give an altar call. And so thank you so much for being on the evangelism podcast.

Mark Young (13:01):
Thank you for having me and Daniel. I’ve watched you quite a few times, met Yuki few times at conference, but I never knew I’ll be co-laboring next to you. And I am so honored and looking forward to
