Action sports outreach uses extreme sports and bike tricks to reach people for Jesus today, John Andrus, Dustin Oram and Logan Hyman. Explain how they use their unique talent as bait to go fishing for a lost generation.
Evangelism Podcast Host (00:19):
Well, Jesus said go into all the world and preach the gospel. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Welcome to the evangelism podcast with Dr. Daniel King, where Daniel interviews, full-time evangelists, pastors, missionaries, and normal everyday Christians to discover how they share their faith, their powerful testimonies and amazing stories that will inspire you to reach people with the good news. And now here’s your host missionary and evangelist Daniel King.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (00:55):
Welcome to the Evangelism Podcast. I’m Daniel King, and I’m excited about telling people about Jesus today. I have three special guests, John Dustin, and Logan, and they are all part of action sports outreach. And we are here in the nation of Malawi. Each of you have brought a bicycle with you. Tell me, how have you been using your bicycles to reach people for Jesus?
John Andrus (01:21):
We’re bicycle riders, we love doing tricks. We love to use it to entertain. We just have that in us. We’d love to do crazy things and to take our sport to the next level, but being able to use it as a tool to bring smiles, to bring joy to people and just to open people’s ears up just for a moment so that we can, we can drop Jesus into them.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (01:40):
That’s awesome. And so, as we’ve gone out into different schools out in the streets even during the festivals, you guys have brought your bicycles with you. And I remember Dustin, we were in one of the cities last week and we were out on the street and you started doing bike tricks. And just instantly, there were several hundred kids that just gathered around and it just instantly pulled people in. And then we got to preach the gospel to them. Now,
Dustin Orem (02:12):
The Lord’s so good and it’s such a blessing how he uses something as simple as the, the BMX bike as a resource to gather people that his, his good news would be heard, and that he’d be able to take people from death to life. And we’re just thankful to use the bicycles as a, as a tool to come alongside the churches, the local communities, pastors ministers and work with evangelists at large to proclaim proclaim Christ.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (02:43):
Now, several times, I’ve heard you do an illustration with your bike. You put your bike down to the ground and you say bicycle do tricks. How do you use that to share the gospel?
Dustin Orem (02:54):
Just looking at John 15, where the branch and the vine and the, just like the branch can do nothing apart from the vine. Neither can we do anything apart from Jesus, but bicycle CRE with value and purpose is built for relationship and without the rider, it just sits there and using that to illustrate as they just saw stunts or are about to see stunts and are excited for that, but want that visual to be made known as we do that. But this is all for Jesus says just like the bicycle. We can do nothing apart from Jesus Christ and using that as an illustration to start that, and then be able to go into what we need to restore that relationship is in that moment. I’m not on the bicycle, the bicycles laying on the ground. So there’s a separation for it to go and what it’s supposed to, to do the stunts that it was created to do. And so they’re able to see that and we can go into our need for Jesus and the separation we have due to sin and, and what he has done to restore that relationship to walk in the power. He, he gives,
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (03:54):
So each of you love bike riding, and you’ve kind of grown up, I guess, since you were young kids just loving to ride bikes, but how did you transition from being just a bike rider to becoming evangelists? Because now you guys are actually using your skill in order to preach the gospel. How did that happen?
John Andrus (04:13):
But yeah, for me, about 20 years ago I was deep in, in the BMX and skateboard culture. I loved it and I was a Christian at the time, a new Christian and you know, I spent a lot of time at church being discipled and just excited to be a part of the worship team and all that. And at, at the time 20 years ago, nobody was really using action sports in like a ministry way. And the Luis Palau association, they came out with a DVD that they put together called live in it. I was skateboarders pro skateboarders, pro BMX riders put together this video of them just doing what they love and then mix the gospel message in there. And I was like, wow, there’s Christians that do this. And they do it for ministry. And so the Lewis Paul association was actually a cool hub that a lot of Christian ministries that did action sports started to come together to. And we ultimately, that’s where Dustin and I met and we met Vic Murphy and all these other ministries, even you Daniel King, we met through this hub the global evangelist or the global network of evangelists. Yeah. So it, so that was actually a cool connection point for us to see how we can use sports for the kingdom. Yeah. I really liked
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (05:17):
The global network of evangelists. They have an expression, they say there’s many expressions, but one message. And so you guys are evangelists using your bikes and then other people may have gifts in different areas, but you are using the talent, the gifting that God has given you to bring glory to him, which, which is amazing. Logan, what is this trip to Africa been like for you? What have you learned from this? What have you, what’s your experience? And
Logan Heiman (05:47):
So it’s been amazing. I mean, Dustin and I been here three weeks now, John just got here, you’ve been here. We’ve been with you the whole time Daniel brought up. Yeah. So I’ve done trips similar to this. But I haven’t done anything with either the Global Network of Evangelists or the Palau’s. And I mean, just for me seeing how much like God is doing globally and how honestly small the world is like with all these festivals. And I mean, the whole team is from so many different countries. So yeah, it’s really opened my eyes. We did India, Dustin and I, and it wasn’t as evangelistic. But yeah, this trip has been eyeopening and just so motivating and revived my joy in the Lord riding and just life in travel and in my heart for people. So, yeah, it’s been amazing
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (06:43):
Action. Sports outreach does not only do stuff here in Africa. You’re very active in America doing outreaches. Tell me some about what an outreach in the context of the United States would look, look like.
John Andrus (06:59):
Yeah. So our, the stage name for our, for our show team, the stage name is the stunt dudes. And we use that and we just put on events with ramps, we set up ramps, we set up sound high energy music, and we just do an entertainment. It’s kinda like the modern day circus with without the outfits and everything. And and, and
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:18):
No elephants, can I confirm there’s no elephants we’ve been
John Andrus (07:21):
Working on that. We’d really love to get some live animals.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:23):
They get an elephant that rides a bike. That would be the best.
John Andrus (07:27):
I mean, the future hopefully holds some pyrotechnics and explosions and fires and animals. I mean, that’s, that’s the vibe we’re going for with the stunt it’s so yeah, we just put on high energy entertaining shows and we try to have everything lead to the cross. So we just want people to know Jesus and do it in a very fun, exciting way. So we’ll set up in parking lots on church stages. Pretty much anywhere you can think of. We go into the schools, we go into the prisons anywhere that you can put two wheels of a bike or a skateboard we’ll, we’ll set it up and we’ll start doing some crazy tricks and having some fun for the Lord.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (07:59):
And so what type of venues do you go into, do you go to churches, schools you do just outreaches in city squares.
John Andrus (08:08):
Yeah, we do. We really do a variety of pretty much anywhere you can put a bicycle. So one of the, one of the models we really like in the states is when we can do school assemblies, we’ll do a week of school assemblies, and then we can’t do the gospel message in public schools, but we can invite them to to an outreach. So, so we’ll have like a weekend event and we’ll saturate a small city with the gospel through the school, not the gospel, what, with an invitation through the school assemblies and then have a big event on the weekend and invite them to come out. And that way we get a huge turnout usually. And we see a lot of people respond to Christ
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (08:41):
Yesterday. I heard you preach a message, give an altar call. It was thousands of kids were surrounding the ramps and you just started to preach to them. What does that feel like when you have an opportunity to take someone from darkness and bring them into the light?
John Andrus (09:00):
Oh man, there’s, there’s nothing greater than just making eye contact with people. When you can tell that they’re thinking about the God of the universe and thinking about where they’re standing with him and seeing that they can have a free gift of eternal life and be right with God that day. So just seeing people’s faces as they’re hearing the gospel, it’s what I live for. And so, you know, a lot of times we only have a short amount of time to share the gospel. And so, like we have heavy convictions of like bringing the truth as, as much as possible in a short amount of time. And to be able to let people know that they don’t have to earn their way to heaven, like Christ already came, he earned the way he paid the way for them. And they have to believe in receive, turn and follow him and they can have eternal life. And I mean, we wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for that.
Evangelism Coach Daniel King (09:44):
Well, I so admire your gift, your skill. When you do a flip on the bike or jump high, everyone is oohing and aahing, but you always make sure Dustin, you ride back up on the platform and you point to heaven and give the glory to God. And, and so I just love that. It love what you guys do, and I’m so honored to partner with you in order to bring people to Jesus. Awesome
John Andrus (10:09):
