Have you ever asked yourself, “What is the meaning of life?” Or, “What should I accomplish with my life?” Or perhaps you have asked “What should I study in school?” or “Who should I marry?” Or perhaps you have gone through personal trauma or a heartrending experience, like a death of a loved one or dear friend, and you have cried out, “Why did this tragedy happen?” All of these are important questions, but there are three questions that are even more important for you to ask.
The three most important questions in life
In fact, I propose that there are three questions so vital that the way you answer them will shape how you answer all the other important questions you ask in life. Your answers to these questions will determine your worldview and life philosophy. They will help you decide what is most important to you; they will influence how you live your life every day; your eternal destiny depends on how you answer them.
So, what are the three questions that are so important? Consider the following:
1. Is there a God?
2. If there is a God, does He care about me?
3. If there is a God who cares about me, what is my response to Him?
We could restate these questions as:
1. Is there a God?
2. If there is a God, does He care about me?
3. If there is a God who cares about me, what is my response to Him?
These are the three most important questions anyone can every ask. The answers to them will give the basic shape to a person’s life and priorities and inform decisions great and small. How have I answered these three questions? One profound verse from the Bible gives me the answer:
Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)
This passage tells me three things about God: that He exists, that He rewards those who seek Him, and that I need to have faith in God. To put it another way, the answers to the three vital questions can be stated as follows:
1. God is THERE. So I believe there is a God. This first answer confirms my observations of nature and myself. Because there is order in the universe, something must have given this universe order. Design requires a designer. Inside me there is a sense of right and wrong. Morality requires a moral law giver. These two reasons, more than any others, convince me there is a God. In the first section of this book, I will unfold seven proofs that convince me that God is there.
2. God does CARE. I know that God cares because life itself is mind-bogglingly wonderful. That I can think and feel and laugh and share life with my wife and my children and other family and friends—experiencing what it means to care for others and be cared for in turn by them—tells me that God must be caring too. But He didn’t leave it to me to guess about that. He revealed Himself through the Bible and through Jesus Christ to show me what He is like, and how much He cares for me.
The Bible is the starting point of Christian apologetics. But what makes the Bible unique? There are many different religions with many different holy books. To leap from the belief that there is a God to the belief that this God is the who speaks in and through the Bible requires faith. But there are many rational reasons for taking this step of faith. The evidence for the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus sustains my faith that the Bible is true. In the second section of this book, I will present evidence to prove that God cares for every person, including you.
3. I must DARE to put my trust in him. Since God cares about me, He wants to have a relationship with me. According to the Bible, this relationship with God begins when I make Jesus Christ the Lord of my life. A “sinner” is someone who, left to themselves, doesn’t give a thought to God. The sin of humankind is obvious. People lie, cheat, steal, and have hate in their hearts for their fellow humans. G.K Chesterton said, “Original Sin is the only church doctrine that can be empirically verified.” Original Sin is what the Bible means when it says, “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23). All people are sinners, and “…the wages of sin is death (Romans 6.23).
